MEETING OF: SENIOR COMMISSION
DATE OF MEETING: August 2, 2001
TIME OF MEETING: 1:15 p.m.
PLACE OF MEETING: CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER
CALL TO ORDER:
Commissioner Whittaker called the Meeting to order at 1:15 p.m.
ROLL CALL taken by Sue Spickard, as follows:
Present: Commissioners Chmiel, Serrin, Weber, West and Whittaker.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE led by Chairperson Whittaker.
CONSENT CALENDAR
Action: Commission unanimously accepted Consent Calendar.
ACCEPTANCE OF DONATIONS
Commission unanimously voted to recommend that the City Council accept
donations that were made to the Center in the amount of $1000.00.
Pine School
Action: Commission discussed the possible site usage for seniors and
directed staff to keep an ongoing "wish list" of Senior Center needs for
expansion.
Senior Housing
Action: Commission discussed drafting a letter to the City Council regarding
their concerns for more Senior Housing in Carlsbad.
ADJOURNMENT
By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of August 2, 2001 was adjourned at
2:15 p.m.

MANAGERS REPORT
June and July have been very busy months at the Center. It's not like the "old"
days around here when there used to be a lull in participation during certain
months of the year.
Our 13th Annual Ice Cream Social was held Sunday June 10. The entertainment
was terrific, the weather beautiful and the volunteers supportive as always.
However, the attendance was disappointing. Next year we will try it again and
have more advertisements, perhaps even pay for some and see what happens.
We will then review, if this is an event that we should continue, considering the
amount of effort that goes into it.
John Lamb, author of the best selling book, "San Diego Specters" delighted the
audience on June 13, when he shared his sometimes spooky ghost stories about
San Diego's haunted history.
Representatives from North County Lifeline were at the Center on June 19 to
inform Carlsbad seniors of the free services that Lifeline provides including
shared housing, transportation, counseling and more...
A Senior Scam seminar sponsored by the Contractors State License Board
attracted curious seniors and the media on July 11. Contractors, consumer
protection agencies, local law enforcement, and AARP took turns explaining
various frauds aimed at the older population. Media coverage included Channels
5, 8, & 10 Television stations and the San Diego Union Tribune.
Photographer Eleanor Weston Larson displayed some of her various
photographs and explained the inspiration and drive behind her creations on July
12 as part of the "Meet the Artist" series. This is a great program where selected
artists display their works in the gallery for a month and then the artist comes to
discuss their works with the seniors.
On July 18th a six week course was started on how to play the exciting tile game
of ancient China, "Mah Jongg". Interest in this class has been so overwhelming
that the instructor has agreed to teach another six week course beginning
October 3.
