MEETING OF: SENIOR COMMISSION
DATE OF MEETING: October 3, 2002
TIME OF MEETING: 1:15 p.m.
PLACE OF MEETING: CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER
CALL TO ORDER:
Commissioner Wood called the meeting to order at 1 :15 p.m.
ROLL CALL taken by Lori Swenck as follows:
Present: Commissioners Savary, Serrin, Weber, West and Wood.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE led by Commissioner Wood.
CONSENT CALENDAR
Action: Commission unanimously accepted Consent Calendar.
PATIO REMODEL
Commission discussed their desire to meet with the proposed artist
to see what ideas she has in mind.
PINE SCHOOL
Ex-commissioner, Jim Whittaker stated his interest in having a regulation
size Lawn Bowling green to be a part of the new proposed park.
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
Commission discussed having a catered function in the afternoon at the
Senior Center. Tentative date is scheduled for April 1 1 , 2003.
ADJOURNMENT
By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of October 3, 2002 was adjourned
at 2:00 p.m.

The month of August promises to be as interesting as the past few months.
Some of the scheduled events include:
The new program "Stamps for Seniors" starting August 10
Assistant Library Director Geoff Armour will speak on Carlsbads colorful
past, and introduce the newly published self-guided walking tour of Carlsbad
August 21
"Creative Memories" will demonstrate how to preserve photos, August 23
As always, the excursion program "Senior Safari" is going great guns. Sharon
Jewell works tirelessly to assure that our seniors get the best trip for the best
price.
The Senior Center Dining room floor will be refurbished, the room painted and
some minor repairs completed during August. During that time, lunch will be
served in the Auditorium. It is our hope that all the work can be completed in 2
weeks.
Plans for the demolition of the Pine School property are moving along. I have
been appointed to the committee that is taking the lead on this project.
The development of Zone 19 Park is moving along swiftly. A senior "drop in"
area is being designed in the project and will provide an opportunity for Seniors
in the southern area to access necessary services (legal, taxes, etc) a bit closer
to home.
The Senior Center has grown beyond our dreams, just as all of us had hoped.
However, with that growth comes some necessary changes. We have hired a
new receptionist, Cynthia Torrie who will be starting August 6. We have needed
to do this because we are planning on accepting credit cards for payments, doing
on line registration, installing a cash register and other advancements to bring us
up to speed with the rest of the City. Unfortunately what that means is that we
are having to let go of our very dedicated front desk volunteers. They have all
been most gracious and understanding, but none the less, for us, progress is a
difficult transition. We are making efforts to reassign the volunteers into other
positions of interest to them.
That's a brief update for now. If you have any questions, I am happy to address
them.
