Date of Meeting May 3, 2007 Place of Meeting: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:02 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Hopkins, Nelson, Savary and Surridge Absent O'Connell PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Led by Commissioner Savary. PRESENTATIONS None ANNOUNCEMENTS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Savary, the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on April 5, 2007 were approved. AYES: Hopkins, Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: O'Connell PUBLIC OPEN FORUM 1. Jack Cummings 201 Grand Avenue Carlsbad, CA 92008 Addressed the Commission to bring more of an outreach to other seniors in Carlsbad. Cummings said that he would like to have more information where he lives at Carlsbad By The Sea about what the Senior Center offers. APPROVAL OF AGENDA ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, the Agenda for May 3, 2007 was approved. AYES: Hopkins, Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: O'Connell CONSENT CALENDAR The consent calendar was unanimously approved (4-0). s 1. AB #0507-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) To accept, approve and file the April 5, 2007 Senior Commission Meeting Summary Report. Senior Commission Meeting May 3, 2007 Page 2 2. AB #0507-2 ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION - KEVIN VINER - ACTION) To accept a donation of $40 from John and Marilyn Russell and recommend acceptance by the City Manager. DEPARTMENT REPORTS None COMMISSION/STAFF REPORT 1 . Gail Lynn updated the Commission. on the Senior Center recreation and social services programs. One of the highlights in May is a Cool Jazz concert on May 24, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m in the auditorium The North County Transit District (NCTD) in conjunction with the Senior Center is offering senior's a free ride to the Carlsbad Premium Outlet stores on May 18th. May 23tre a free ride to the mall at Westfield Plaza Camino Real is scheduled. These trips will begin and end at the Senior Center. The Senior BREEZE Sprees is an educational ridership campaign designed to train seniors how to use the BREEZE bus system. Lynn reported the Aging and Independence Services (A.I S.) is now accessible online It will allow computer literate people to access information online rather than trying to obtain information by phone. Senior Safari excursion on May 10, 2007 will be heading to Catalina for the day. The annual 4th of July celebration in down town San Diego will include dinner at Anthony's and a harbor cruise of the bay to watch the fireworks. Lynn attended a pre construction meeting on the expansion of the Center. Construction will begin on May 14, 2007 and completion is anticipated in the fall of 2007 2 Jack Risley, Supervisor expressed the Senior Centers' sorrow of the passing of long-time employee Terry Talbot who has served for the past 30 years at the Senior Center. Risley presented statistics on home meals, congregate and transportation participation for the month of May. Risley reported that the volunteers will be serving Mothers Day homebound seniors with a special Mothers Day meal.
