Date of Meeting October 4, 2007 Place of Meeting: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell, Savary and Surridge Absent: None PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Led by Commissioner O'Connell. PRESENTATIONS None ANNOUNCEMENTS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES ACTION: On motion by Commissioner O'Connell, the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on September 6, 2007 were approved. AYES: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: None APPROVAL OF AGENDA ACTION: On motion by Commissioner O'Connell, the Agenda for October 4, 2007 was approved. AYES: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: None PUBLIC COMMENT: Al Jandro 2200 Afton Way Carlsbad, CA 92008 Addressed the Commission suggesting a survey be distributed to seniors with their monthly water bill. The survey would determine amenities seniors enjoy at existing City parks and their recommendations for future improvements. Lynn responded that the implementation of the survey would be unlikely given the cost factor and suggested the idea be investigated further as to its feasibility. CONSENT CALENDAR The consent calendar was unanimously approved (5-0). 1. AB #1007-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) To accept, approve and file the October 4, 2007 Senior Commission Meeting Summary Report. AB #1007-2 COMMISSION APPOINTMENT TO THE COMMUNITY ACTIVITY GRANT CITIZEN REVIEW COMMITTEE - (ACTION) The Commission appointed Vice Chair Mike O'Connell to represent the Senior Commission on the Community Activity Grant Citizen Review Committee. 3. AB #1007-3 OPTIONS FOR SENIOR AMENITIES WITHIN PARKS - (DISCUSSION) To discuss and recommend park amenity options for seniors in both future and existing City parks to be brought forward to a Joint Parks and Recreation Commission/Senior Commission meeting. The item was continued to next month's agenda to ensure all commissioners had time to review park sites and consider additional ideas for discussion. DEPARTMENT REPORTS None COMMISSION/STAFF REPORT 1. Chairperson Nelson shared some thoughts with respect to senior amenities at existing and future parks. The Commission decided to continue discussion of the matter at the next Senior Commission meeting. 2. Gail Lynn updated the Commission on the Senior Center recreation and programs. Among the highlights for September were a Senior Safari trip to Las Vegas, an exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls at the San Diego Natural History Museum, and a tour of the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Lynn reported that Safari Trip participants filled out a survey and rated customer service at 92% satisfaction. Two seminars were held in September on "Normal Aging vs. Dementia" and "Getting Fiscally Fit." Billy Harper Band played swing and ballroom music at the monthly dance. "Meet the Artist", Ralph "Pete" Peters displayed his photographs in the hallway gallery. 3. Jack Risley reported for the month of September that he served 2028 meals in the dining room, averaging 107 meals served per day. Of special note was a "Fiesta Day" lunch consisting of Carne Asada, Mexican rice and refried beans. Entertainment was provided by Flamenco guitarist Joseph Angelastro who played to a sold out lunch crowd.
