Date of Meeting February 7, 2008 Place of Meeting: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell, Savary and Surridge Absent: None PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Led by Commissioner Savary. PRESENTATIONS None ANNOUNCEMENTS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES ACTION: On motion by Commissioner O'Connell, the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on December 6, 2007 were approved. AYES: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell,. Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: None APPROVAL OF AGENDA ACTION: On motion by Commissioner O'Connell, the Agenda for February 7, 2008 was approved. AYES: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: None CONSENT CALENDAR The consent calendar was unanimously approved (5-0). 1. AB #0208-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) Accepted and approved and filed the December 6, 2007 Senior Commission Meeting Summary Report. 2. AB #0208-2 ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION CARLSBAD BRIDGE CLUB - (ACTION) Accepted and approved donation of $500.00 from the Carlsbad Bridge Club. 3. AB#0208-3 ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER NUTRITION COUNCIL - (ACTION) Accepted and approved donation of $264.00 from the Carlsbad Senior Center Nutrition Council Bake Sale. Senior Commission Minutes February 7, 2008 4. AB #0208-4 OPTIONS FOR SENIOR AMENITIES WITHIN PARKS (DISCUSSION) Motion was made by Commissioner O'Connell and unanimously agreed upon by Commission to postpone future discussion on senior amenities within current and future parks indefinitely in light of the current budget situation. COMMISSION/STAFF REPORT 1. Commissioner Surridge updated the Commission on the Tri-City Medical Center Advisory Group meeting held in January. The Tri-City member team supports the least expensive proposal. Commissioner Surridge asked staff to post information regarding the different proposals. She also suggested having an informational meeting at the Senior Center to explain the new bond proposal. 2. Gail Lynn updated the Commission on Senior Center recreation activities and programs. Among the events for November was the Senior Safari trip to Del Mar "Holiday of Lights" which ended with dinner at the Brigantine Seafood Restaurant. In addition, a "Meet the Artist" reception was held for artist photographer L.J. Sullivan at the lobby gallery. People listened to a jazz guitarist while sipping sparkling apple cider and enjoying cheese and crackers. Four seminars were held: (1) Q & A Regarding Health Insurance; (2) What to Look for When Selecting Home Care Services; (3) Fall Prevention and Talking with Older Drivers; and (4) 2008 Medicare Updates. The Volunteer Recognition dinner held at the Crossings on February 1, 2008 was a great success. The Senior Center has 171 volunteers that equates to 11,228 volunteer hours served and a cost savings of $249,851. Commission thanked staff for doing an outstanding job. The Senior Center applied for an award at the annual C.P.R.S. Conference in the health lifestyle category and received 2nd place for Individual Dietary Planning. Plans are underway for the Grand Opening of the newly expanded Senior Center and the relocation of Recreation Administration offices. The opening is planned for March 5, 2008. 3. Jack Risley served Congregate an average of 110 meals per each week day and 673 Home Meals for the month of January. Some of the special meals planned for February are; Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, National Cherry Month, National New England Clam Chowder Day and National Chocolate Mint Day. The Annual Bake Sale was sold out as most baked items were home-made, contributing to its success.
