MEETING OF: Senior Commission
DATE OF MEETING: October 2, 2008
TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m.
PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
2. ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows:
Present: Nelson, Savary and Surridge
Absent: Hopkins and O'Connell
3. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Surridge led the Pledge of Allegiance.
4. PRESENTATIONS: A representative from Y.A.N.A. (You Are Not Alone) is a service
provided for seniors who live in Carlsbad. Upon request, Volunteer Police will call to make
sure seniors are safe, and if the phone is not answered they will drive to the residence to
check up on them.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Surridge the Minutes of the
following meeting was unanimously approved:
Minutes of the Regular Meeting held August 7, 2008.
6. CONSENT CALENDAR:
A. AB# 1008-1 Summary Report of October 2. 2008
ACTION: On a motion by Commissioner Savary Commission
adopted/approved to accept the August 7, 2008 Summary Report.
AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge
NOES: None
ABSENT: Hopkins, and O'Connell
B. AB# 1008-2 Acceptance of Donation
ACTION: On a motion by Commissioner Savary Commission
adopted/approved a donation of $250.00 from Monarch Senior Living for monthly
dance held in the auditorium.
AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge

C. AB# 1 008-3 Acceptance of Donation
ACTION: On a motion by Commissioner Savary Commission
adopted/approved an in-kind donation valued at approximately $350.00 from
Innovative Body Science.
AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge

ABSENT: Hopkins, and O'Connell
D. AB #1008-4 Acceptance of Donation
ACTION: On a motion by Commissioner Savary Commission
adopted/approved a donation of $25.00 from Robert W. Johnsmiller.

7. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
A. AB# 1008-5 Revision of Guidelines for Participation in Senior Activities
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge adopted/approved a revision to
the Guidelines for Participation in Senior Center Activities to be a minimum of 50
years of age.
AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge

ABSENT: Hopkins, and O'Connell
B. Recreation Area Manager, Gail Lynn updated the Commission on September
activities at the Senior Center and Fitness Room Membership.
KoKo Beach tickets are now on sale. This is 22nd Annual fundraiser for the City
of Carlsbad Senior Center. Tickets for lunch and early bird dinner are $5.00 off
in the month of October. There will also be a drawing on October 31st in the
dining room at 11:30 am.
C. Recreations Supervisor, Jack Risley updated the Commission on the serving
numbers of Congregate and Home Meals for the month of September.
Hot Rods & Cool Treats was held September 21st at Pine Park and
co-sponsored by the Nutrition Council. Cotton candy, hot dogs and ice cream
were enjoyed by local citizens. Some of the money will benefit home meal
drivers to help with mileage reimbursement.
8. ADJOURNMENT:
By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of October 2, 2008 was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
