HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-01-06; Senior Commission; Minutes (2)MINUTES MEETING OF: Senior Commission DATE OF MEETING: January 6, 2011 TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows: Present: Nelson, Savary and Surridge Absent: O'Connell PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Savary led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Savary, the minutes of the December 2, 2010 meeting were unanimously approved. CONSENT CALENDAR. 1. AGENDA ITEM #0111-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, Commission unanimously accepted the December 2, 2010 Summary Report. AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSENT: O'Connell DEPARTMENT REPORTS: AGENDA ITEM #0111-2 ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR-PERSON - (ACTION) 2. ACTION: On a vote and motion by Commissioner Savary, Commission Surridge was unanimously elected to Vice Chairperson that was recently vacated by Anna Hopkins who resigned in November 2010. 3. AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSENT: O'Connell 3. AGENDA ITEM #0111-3 SENIOR CENTER REPORT - (ACTION) ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, Commission unanimously approved the January 6, 2010 Senior Center Report. AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None ABSENT: O'Connell January 6, 2011 Senior Commission Meeting Page 2 Gail Lynn, Recreation Area Manager, gave an overview of the December and January highlights. On December 11, the Annual Holiday Hawaiian Dance performance was held in the auditorium. Each year the senior's look forward to the show and over 125 people attended. Also in December, the Ukulele class serenaded the seniors at lunch in the dining room. In January one of our most enjoyed volunteer teachers is moving on. Volunteer, Richard Brian taught watercolor painting at the center. His class was well attended not just to learn watercolor techniques but to gather for the camaraderie. He will be missed. A new group beginning in January, called "Writing our Lives," will be lead by Donna Brown Agins, who has years of experience teaching creative writing. Jack Risley, Recreation Supervisor, reported that the congregate attendance is improving. The holiday meal for congregate and home meals was Prime Rib with all the fixings. Jack mentioned the caterer who prepares meals for congregate and home meals will cater the Volunteer Recognition Event. The Annual Volunteer Recognition Event will be held at the Senior Center on March 5, 2010, 5.00 p.m. to 8 p.m. The theme this year is Mardi Gras, hors d'oeuvres, desserts, and entertainment will be provided. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioner Mike O'Connell has resigned as Senior Commissioner due to a conflict with his work schedule.
