HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-04-07; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: Senior Commission DATE OF MEETING: April 7, 2011 TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows: Present: Nelson, Savary and Surridge Absent: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Surridge led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Savary, the minutes of the January 6, 2011 meeting were unanimously approved. CONSENT CALENDAR: 1. AGENDA ITEM # 0411-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, Commission unanimously accepted the January 6, 2011 Summary Report. AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None DEPARTMENT REPORTS: 2. AGENDA ITEM # 0411-2 COMMISSION APPOINTMENT TO COMMUNITY HEALTH-CARE ALLIANCE COMMITTEE - (ACTION) ACTION: On a vote and motion by Commissioner Surridge, Chairperson Nelson was elected to the Community Healthcare Alliance Committee. AYES: Savary and Surridge NOES: Nelson 3. AGENDA ITEM # 0411-3 SENIOR CENTER REPORT - (ACTION) ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, Commission unanimously approved the April 7, 2011 Senior Center Report. AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge NOES: None Gail Lynn, Recreation Area Manager, gave an overview of the last quarter. Some of the highlights were; Cowboy Jack, performing in the dining room, "Getting the Most from Your Digital Camera" and AARP tax preparation. April 7, 2011 Senior Commission Meeting Page 2 The Annual Volunteer Recognition Event was held at the Senior Center on March 5, 2011, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This year's theme was Mardi Gras and food, entertainment and camaraderie was shared by all. Commissioner, Jack Nelson and the other commissioners, thanked staff for making the volunteer event a great experience. Staff also thanked the commissioners for their support. Day Trippers will resume this coming May 2011. The senior trips will be through an outside source that will plan the trips and transportation. Jack Risley, Recreation Supervisor, reported that the congregate attendance is continuing to improve. In February, Valentine's Day was celebrated in the dining room with a special meal and entertainment. In March, Irish style fiddle performers helped celebrate St. Patrick's Day in the dining room. For lunch the traditional corn beef and cabbage was served. Farmers Market script money sponsored by Aging and Independence Services will begin in May and will serve low income seniors. The San Diego Charitable Foundation will not be sponsoring MOM'S Meals this year due to money constraints. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Mr. David Tweedy and Mr. Ray Pearson have been appointed to serve as Senior Commissioners. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: ADJOURNMENT: By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of April 7, 2011 was adjourned at 3:34 p.m. Commissioners will adjourn to the Senior Center Activity Room for a reception to meet the new Parks & Recreation Director, Chris Hazeltine.
