HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-05-05; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: Senior Commission DATE OF MEETING: May 5, 2011 TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Surridge called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows: Present: Pearson, Savary, Surridge and Tweedy Absent: Nelson PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Savary led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Approval of the April minutes was postponed to the June meeting due to a lack of a quorum of commissioners who were in attendance at May's meeting. CONSENT CALENDAR: 1. AGENDA ITEM # 0511-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) Summary report approval was postponed to the June meeting due to a lack of a quorum of commissioners who were in attendance at May's meeting. DEPARTMENT REPORTS: 2. AGENDA ITEM # 0511-2 SENIOR CENTER REPORT - (ACTION) ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Pearson, Commission unanimously approved the April 7, 2011 Senior Center report. AYES: Pearson, Savary, Surridge and Tweedy NOES: None Gail Lynn, Recreation Area Manager gave an overview of the April special events. In May a new activity will begin, "Introduction to Primordial Sound Meditation," on May 16, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Primordial Meditation is rooted in India's ancient yoga tradition and it is suppose to help with stress and give a sense of well-being. National Senior Health & Fitness Day - "One Mile Walk" on May 25, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Senior's will meet at Pine Park to begin the one-mile walk. "Senior Trips Sneak Peek" on May 26, 10:00 a.m. - noon. A sneak preview of upcoming excursions will be show-cased in the auditorium. Door prizes and refreshments will be offered. "Joe Gandelman & Friends Ventriloquist Show" will perform in the auditorium on May 26, 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. May 5, 2011 Senior Commission Meeting Page 2 Jack Risley, Supervisor gave an update on the Nutrition Program. To celebrate May Day, teacher Frank Leong's ukulele students will perform in the dining room accompanied by Hawaiian dancers. For Mother's Day, seniors will be entertained in the dining room by pianist, Eleanor Baldwin. She will play songs from the 20s through the 50s. ANNOUNCEMENTS: After twenty-two years working for the City of Carlsbad, Gail Lynn announced her retirement. Gail's last day will be May 23, 2011. Sue Spickard, Recreation Services Manager, announced a retirement party for Gail on May 10, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the Senior Center activity room. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: ADJOURNMENT: By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of May 5, 2011 was adjourned at 3:41 p.m. Commissioners will adjourn to the Senior Center activity room to celebrate newly retired Recreation Area Manager, Gail Lynn. Kris Westland Secretary
