HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-10-06; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: Senior Commission DATE OF MEETING: October 6, 2011 TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows: Present: Nelson, Pearson, Savary and Surridge Absent: Tweedy Commissioner Tweedy arrived at 3:17 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Surridge led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Pearson, the minutes of the September 1, 2011 meeting were approved. CONSENT CALENDAR: 1. AGENDA ITEM #1011-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) On motion by Commissioner Pearson, Commission accepted the September 1, 2011 Senior Commission meeting summary report. AYES: Nelson, Pearson, Savary and Surridge ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: Tweedy Noes: None DEPARTMENT REPORTS: 2- AGENDA ITEM #1011-2 PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT (INFORMATION) Parks & Recreation Director, Chris Hazeltine gave an overview of Parks & Recreation vision for the future. At the end of the presentation Director Hazeltine had an open question and answer period. Hazeltine addressed the commission regarding the Recreation Area Manager's position and their "letter for consideration" to be redirected to him for review. 3. AGENDA ITEM # 1011- 3 COMMUNITY ACTIVITY GRANT CITIZEN REVIEW COMMITTEE (ACTION) Commissioners unanimously elected Commissioner Pearson to serve on the Community Activity Grant Citizen Review Committee for FY 2011/2012. 4. AGENDA ITEM # 1011-4 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (ACTION) Commission unanimously accepted and approved a verbal and written report on the ongoing activities and on upcoming events. October 6, 2011 Senior Commission Meeting Page 2 In September, the annual Ice Cream Social was held at Pine Park. Ice cream sundaes, hot dogs and popcorn were available for purchase. Seniors were entertained by songstress, Carolyn Jaynes and Carlsbad Senior Center's own Hawaiian class dancers lead by Christinia Lee. Some lucky seniors won prizes and everyone enjoyed the afternoon. Another highlight in September was the CVS Flu Shot Clinic. Licensed CVS Pharmacists administered the 2011 "all-in-one influenza vaccine." Also the 2nd Fall Prevention Awareness Faire was held and many health-care and safety professionals participated in this event. Screening stations were setup in the auditorium. In October tickets went on sale for the 25th annual KoKo Beach Fundraiser. KoKo Beach owners Mr. Jeff King and Mr. Martin Kouma have sponsored this event for 25 years. To celebrate Octoberfest, Jeurgen Rosenfeld will serenade the lunch crowd in the dining room with his accordion playing. "The ABC's & Part D of Medicare" workshop will explain important changes to the Medicare Advantage and Part D plans for 2012. Spickard said the Police Department does not support the Senior Center being a drop off location for pharmaceutical drugs and medicine. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Chairperson Nelson thanked the city for hosting the Boards and Commission dinner at the Crossings Canyons restaurant. He also said he enjoyed coming to the Ice Cream Social and thanked the staff who participated in the planning of the event. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: Commissioner tour of other senior centers.
