HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-03-08; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: Senior Commission DATE OF MEETING: March 8, 2012 TIME OF MEETING: 3:30 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. ROLL CALL was by the secretary as follows: Present: Nelson, Pearson, Savary, and Tweedy Absent: Surridge PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Savary led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Savary, the minutes ofthe February 9, 2012 meeting were approved. CONSENT CALENDAR: 1. AGENDA ITEM # 0312-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION) On motion by Commissioner Pearson, Commission accepted the February 9, 2012 Senior Commission meeting summary report. AYES: Nelson, Pearson, Savary, and Tweedy ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: Surridge NOES: None PUBLIC COMMENT: Ray Pearson Carlsbad, CA 92008 Citizen Pearson spoke about the predicted financial cutbacks to Carlsbad Unified School District (C.U.S.D.) Pearson encouraged commission to do what they could to support the city and the district in working together to address the issue. DEPARTMENT REPORTS: 2. AGENDA ITEM # 0312-2 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE (INFORMATION) Recreation Services Manager, Sue Spickard gave an update on Parks & Recreation activities. Question was asked if the Recreation Area Manager position will be filled. Spickard said the position is in the budget. Beginning next week a consultant firm, Baker Tilly will be evaluating the Parks & March 8, 2012 Senior Commission Meeting Page 2 Recreation department and making recommendations. The goal is to ensure we are providing high qualify services in the most efficient manner. Other departments will be going through this assessment process with Baker Tilly. 3. AGENDA ITEM # 0312-3 BABY-BOOMER OUTREACH - DISCUSSION California was selected to host the 2013-2014 Senior Olympics. This is a great opportunity to host one or several venues in Carlsbad. Commissioner Pearson knows one of the leads on the Senior Olympics committee in San Diego and plans to get in touch with him to find out more information. Intergenerational Participation - Mentorship to high school or junior college students. Baby-Boomers and seniors in general can mentor the younger generation. Once the criteria is selected the next step is to make an appointment with school administrators and teachers to plan an agenda. Commissioner Tweedy made a suggestion to have a Poetry Slam. This is a competition in which you recite original work based on a format you choose. Seniors will compete against students. The outcome will be that each generation learns something from the other generation. 4. AGENDA ITEM # 0312-4 VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION CELEBRATION (INFORMATION) Commission agreed to the date of Saturday, March 24, 2012. Commissioners will partake in welcoming the guests. The time ofthe event will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. High Noon Rotary will help with the serving and attending the bar. Jack Risley, Recreation Supervisor said the planning ofthe event is on schedule and it looks like we will have a great turnout. 5. AGENDA ITEM # 0312-5 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (ACTION) On motion by Commissioner Pearson, Commission accepted and approved an oral report on donations, ongoing activities and on upcoming events given by Recreation Services Manager, Sue Spickard. AYES: Nelson, Pearson, Savary, and Tweedy ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: Surridge NOES: None Sue Spickard thanked the Rotary for offering to repair 14 benches and plant flowers and do plant maintenance at the senior center. Sue thanked Commissioner Savary for recommending the senior center to be the recipients' of the Rotary Day of Service. Keeping it green, starting next month, the senior center agenda packet will be sent out via email. Hard copy will be furnished upon request.
