MEETING OF: Senior Commission

CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL was by the secretary as follows:
Present: Nelson, Savary, Surridge and Tweedy
Absent: Pearson
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Savary led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Postponed the approval ofthe April 12, 2012 minutes until next
commission meeting.

2. AGENDA ITEM # 0512-2 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE
(INFORMATION)
Sue Spickard, Recreation Services Manager said the Alga Norte Park is going out for bid
this July 2012. The proposed park will include; swim complex, ball fields, a dog park
divided in two; one area for small dogs and another for large dogs. Tot lot. Universal play
equipment, trails, skate park, and other proposed amenities.
3. AGENDA ITEM # 0512-3 PARTNERING WITH SCHOOLS (INFORMATION)
Commission discussed the possibility of partnering with the Carlsbad schools to have an
intergenerational program.
The cify volunteer coordinator, Sue Irey has advised that city volunteers are recruited and
trained to volunteer in city programs.
4. AGENDA ITEM # 0512-4 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (ACTION)
Commission accepted and approved an oral report on the ongoing activities and upcoming
events presented by Recreation Services Manager, Sue Spickard.

Sue Spickard contacted Cal State University San Marcos to inquire if there are students
currently majoring in health education, and would be interested in working as an instructor
in the fitness room.
The center is open some weeknights and weekends for rentals, and because staff is
already working at the center, staff is proposing to have the fitness room available during
evening and weekend hours; therefore not incurring any extra expense.
Sue Spickard shared with commissioners the "AARP CA Live Well San Diego Summit" will
be televised and shown at the Sheraton Hotel in Carlsbad, 9:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15.
The Rotarians painted benches and planted flowers on what they call their "Day of
Service" on April 28. A thank you letter will be sent to the Rotary Club of Carlsbad for the
service.
