MEETING OF: Senior Commission

CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL was by the secretary as follows:
Present: Nelson, Savary and Surridge
Absent: Pearson and Tweedy
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Surridge.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Accepted and approved the June 12, 2012 minutes and postponed
the approval of the July 12, 2012 minutes until next commission meeting due to a lack of a
quorum of commissioners who attended the July meeting.
CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. AGENDA ITEM # 0912-1 SUMMARY REPORT (ACTION)
Approved the June 14, 2012 summary report. Postponed the approval of the July 12, 2012
summary report due to a lack of a quorum of commissioners who attended the July
meeting.
DEPARTMENT REPORTS:
2. AGENDA ITEM # 0912-2 GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATION (INFORMATION)
Commissioners reviewed and discussed the potential to update the current guidelines for
participation at the senior center and will be an Action Item on the October agenda.
3. AGENDA ITEM # 0912-3 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (ACTION)
Commission accepted and approved an oral report on the ongoing activities and upcoming
events presented by Recreation Services Manager, Sue Spickard.

Sue Spickard recently met with the Executive Director of Carlsbad by the Sea to discuss
potential collaborations between the two organizations.
The Needs Assessment team is looking ten years forward and believes there will be even
greater demand in the future for the senior population. The city has accepted seven bids
on the Needs Assessment project. The proposals will be analyzed over the next few
weeks.

Spickard was pleased to announce the center has a new resource for Veterans. A
counselor will be available for monthly one-on-one counseling.
Fall Prevention Awareness Week is in full swing with presentations and activities every day
in September. The senior center will showcase different vendors at the center at the Fall
Prevention Faire, Thursday, September 27.
KoKo Beach is starting again and tickets will go on sale the beginning of October.
