HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-08-25; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: Senior Commission August 25, 2016 3:00p.m. TIME OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Min called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Minutes Clerk, Michele Hardy took roll call: Present: Chairperson Min, Commissioners Nelson and Pearson Absent: Commissioners Sachs and Tweedy PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Nelson led the Pledge of Allegiance APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Min asked if there were any corrections or revisions to the minutes of the meeting April 28, 2016. ACTION: AYES: NOES: ABSTAIN: ABSENT: Motion by Commissioner Pearson and duly seconded by Commissioner Nelson, to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting of April 28, 2016 was approved. ·· Chairperson Min, Commissioners Nelson and Pearson None None Commissioners Sachs and Tweedy CONSENT CALENDAR: 1. AB # 0816-1 SUMMARY REPORTS (ACTION) The Commission to accept, approve and file the April28, 2016 Senior Commission meeting summary report. AB # 0816-2 GOAL UPDATES (INFORMATION) Kevin Granse, Recreation Area Manager, updated commissioners on one of their established goals to bring professional speakers to the commission meetings. There are two possible professional speakers and one amateur. One possible professional speaker is Teresa Barnes, President of Hear Communication, a company that provides education on preventive measures on hearing loss. Mr. Granse said he will contact her. A second professional speaker is Liam Dunfey of a Senior Village concept program. It is a program to help seniors stay active and connect with other seniors in their area. Mr. Granse distributed a flyer on Liam Dunfey to the Commissioners and will put this on a future agenda. There is a third possible speaker, an Eagle Scout and senior at Carlsbad High School who would like to present to the commission his design for a succulent hanging garden. Mr. Granse will also try to get him on a future agenda. 3. AB # 0816-3 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (INFORMATION) Kevin Granse, Recreation Area Manager, will email the data to the Commissioners. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioner Pearson addressed on one of the Commissioners' goals, the intergenerational activities. He passed out a flyer to the Commissioners regarding the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation that donated funds to the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad, in which members garden with senior citize.ns from Rancho Carlsbad. Commissioner Pearson suggested to visit the Boys and Girls Club at Rancho Carlsbad to view the garden. Commissioners agreed to have this on the next meeting agenda to come up with a date and vote on it. Mr. Granse announced Commissioner Nelson's term expires at the end of September. There are currently three candidates who applied with the City Clerk's office. He also announced that the invitations to the Boards and Commission appreciation dinner have been sent out and the RSVP deadline is September 15th. The event is scheduled for September 29th. Kevin Granse informed the Commissioners that due to a recent retirement, there has been a reassignment of Recreation Area Managers. Mr. Granse stated that he will be reassigned to oversee the Calavara Hills Community Park and Stagecoach Community Park. Mark Olson, who has been the Aquatics Manager will be reassigned to oversee the Senior Center and the Harding Community Center. Mr. Granse hopes to introduce him at the next meeting.
