MI NUTES Present: Dr. Alan Jacobs, Bob Nelson, Rick Cecelski, Bill Baldwin, Capt. Wally Rossall and Kent Whitson Absent: Bi 11 Harkins Guest: Ross Barber 1. Approval of Minutes The Minutes of the January 8, 1979 meeting were approved as submitted. 2. Review traffic control conditions at the intersection of Las Flores Drive and Pi0 Pic0 Drive. The Commission was very concerned about school children crossing Las Flores Drive and having to contend with vehicular traffic on that street. Therefore, the Commission recommended: (a) that the pedes- trian tunnel under Las Flores Drive be reopened, but only during the times that the majority of children are going to and from school (for current school schedule: 8:OO to 8:45 a.m. and 2:20 to 2:50 p.m. for example); and (b) that the school be responsible for locking and un- locking the gates to the tunnel. Because of the above recommendation, the existingtrafficdistribution at the intersection and the very low accident rate in the area, the Commission again recommended against installing four-way stop control at the intersection as it had at its September 6, 1977 meeting. The Commission also recommended against installing any additional painted crosswalks at the intersection because of the false sense of security they create and because the pedestrian tunnel should be used in lieu of crossing Las Flores Drive at street level. The City recently installed some additional "SCHOOL" signing on the surrounding streets to help alert motorists of the school. 3. Request for stop control on Garfield Street at its intersection with Pacific Avenue. Due to the configuration of the above T-intersection and the antici- pated future traffic volumes from new construction in the area, the Commission recommended that a "YIELD" sign be installed on Garfield Street at its intersection with Pacific Street. Respectfully submitted, K&nt A. Whitson, P.E. For the Traffic Safety Commission KAW: VEB
