This memo focuses on actions and information that are new since the last update. Emergency Operations Center • Emergency Operations Center activated to support COVID-19 mitigation and response operations and information sharing. The prior due date was Dec. 31. All items are now due on March 31, 2021. Staff are monitoring turnover rates as well as queue lengths and purchasing additional items as necessary. • Library children’s staff are re-launching a virtual version of the popular Paws to Read program this afternoon. This program encourages children to practice their read-out- loud skills by reading to therapy dogs in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. Therapy dogs are provided by volunteers from Love on a Leash, a non-profit volunteer pet therapy group. Reading to dogs has been shown to improve the reading and comprehension skills of participants while lowering their stress and anxiety level. The program, formerly held twice a month at the libraries, is now offered with registration via Zoom. Parks & Recreation • Received additional COVID-19 guidance from the state this week on outdoor and indoor youth and recreational adult sports. Restrictions on the vast majority of the activities remain unchanged while the county is under the stay-at-home order and in the purple tier. o Outdoor pickleball play will be limited to singles only at the Poinsettia Community Park pickleball courts beginning Dec. 17, 2020, in keeping with the latest guidance. CORONAVIRUS ACTIONS Dec. 16, 2020 Page 4 • Update on senior meal program: o During the past week, provided 889 meals to Carlsbad residents 60 or older. ▪ 496 meals were delivered to residents’ homes by staff ▪ 393 meals were picked-up at the Senior Center by residents o Total number of meals provided represents a 27% increase in the average total number of meals provided before the pandemic. o Picked up boxes of donated fresh produce from the Carlsbad Strawberry Company and re-distributed the produce through the senior meal program. • Provided the following virtual recreation programs: o Virtual preschool - New session for children ages three and four started last week. Participants are enjoying classic holiday themed sing-alongs, story times and crafts. o Holiday Wrap-Up - The Senior Center staff hosted a virtual holiday gift wrapping party that included festive music, trivia and games. o Successful Aging in Place - This month’s presentation covered various senior living community options. o UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning - The Osher series presented a lecture titled Music and Mind: The Mahlers and Freud. o Gingerbread Ranch Contest - A virtual Leo Carrillo Ranch-inspired gingerbread contest for all ages and skills, held in partnership with the Friends of Carrillo Ranch.
