HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-11-05; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: ARTS COMMISSION CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION MEETING Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020 Teleconference CALL TO ORDER: Chair Laurenn Barker called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Barker, Snyder, Schmidt, Jadhav, White, Chamberlain and Nassiri. STAFF PRESENT: Richard Schultz, Cultural Arts Manager Tony Rodzach, Public Art Coordinator Laurette Garner, Community Arts Coordinator Megan Gilby, Community Arts Coordinator Daisy Hernandez, Senior Office Specialist Mimi Kim, Administrative Assistant APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Art Commission meeting of October 1, 2020 Approved, 7 /0/0/0 PUBLIC COMMENT: None. ARTS COMMISSION MEETING SCHEDULE 2021: Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz reviewed the 2021 Arts Commission meeting dates with the Commissioners. Meetings in January and July were cancelled. Approved, 7 /0/0/0 INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW PUBLIC ART COORDINATOR: New Public Art Coordinator Tonya Rodzach shared with the Commissioners a brief presentation covering her education and past achievements. ARTS EDUCATION UPDATE: Arts Education Coordinator Laurette Garner presented the Commissioners a brief overview of the ways in which lesson plans and programs have been adapted for the COVID-19 pandemic. COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS -APPROVAL OF 2020-2021 (ROUND 2) FUNDING PLAN: Performing Arts Coordinator Megan Gilby reviewed the funding plan for the 2020-2021 (Round 2) Community Arts Grants with the Commissioners. Approved, 5/0/0/3, (Snyder, White and Chamberlain abstained) Page 2 of2 Arts Commission Minutes of the Nov. 5, 2020 Meeting CHAIR REPORT: Chair Barker spoke about her experience attending the virtual Wu Man concert and how much she enjoyed it. She also spoke about how healing the arts can be by referencing a book by a prominent Canadian Neuroscientist who cited doctors prescribing museum visits for patients for their healing benefits. DISCUSSION: FUTURE DIRECTION OF COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS: Manager Schultz shared that at the next Arts Commission meeting the Commissioners would be asked to discuss the future directi9n of Community Arts Grants. CULTUAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT: Manager Schultz reviewed some of the upcoming virtual programs that will be available, such as Seffarine, TAKE3 and A Very Jazzy Holiday with Jazzy Ash. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioners shared the highlights of their participation and attendance at local arts events and programs and also welcomed Tonya Rodzach back to Cultural Arts.
