Compaction Report, prepared by Engineering Design Group, dated September 17, 2019. As requested by City of Carlsbad, we have prepared this compaction summary letter based upon our recent limited field density testing at driveway and driveway approach at the subject site. Onsite material was utilized for driveway subgrade. Onsite material was ripped to a minimum depth of 12 inches and recompacted utilizing a mechanized whacker. Limited field density tests were performed in accordance with D2922 (Nuclear Gauge Method). Our test results indicate that, in the locations tested, soils have been compacted to at least 90% relative compaction, as determined by ASTM D1557, (Procedure A). The reported test results are representative of the soil conditions at the locations tested. Subject: Compaction Report – Rough Grading and Basement Wall Backfill. Reference: 1. Geotechnical Investigation and Foundation Recommendations Proposed New Residence to be Located at 5098 Shore Drive, Carlsbad California, prepared by Engineering Design Group, dated December 23, 2016. 2. Grading Plan No. GR2017-0048 INTRODUCTION In accordance with your request and authorization we have provided limited earthwork observation and compaction testing services during the construction of the proposed single family residence. At the time of this report, site construction is not complete and ongoing work is anticipated. The scope of site construction summarized includes basement excavations, installation and backfill of pump chambers, backfill of site retaining walls and removal and recompaction in the area of new residence and garage outside of the building footprint. The results of our limited quality control and compaction testing operations are summarized below. We understand the proposed improvements include a new two-story residence with basement, attached garage and typical landscape and hardscape improvements. GRADING OPERATIONS The scope of operations for this project consisted of the placement and compaction of basement wall backfill for the new single-family residence and preparation of building pad for attached garage and those portions of the building that extend beyond the basement. Rough grading operations at the subject site were conducted during June, August and September 2019. In the areas of the new basement walls, onsite soils and import soils were utilized for backfill material. Soil was moisture conditioned, placed and recompacted in place. In the areas of building pad preparation, onsite soil was utilized as fill material. At new building footprint, beyond the retaining wall, the upper 3-5 feet of existing weathered and fill materials were removed to competent material, removal bottom ripped and moisture conditioned, and fill materials recompacted. Onsite soil consisted of a range of light brown to brown, silty sands. Import material consisted of light brown to brown, silty sands and sandy silts. Prior to placement, soils were cleaned of vegetative material and debris and 2121 Montiel Road, San Marcos, CA 92069 760.839 7302 EDG JOB NO. 165692-1,4 moisture conditioned. Based upon our visual observation onsite and import soils possess potential for expansion in the low range. Soil was moisture conditioned with a fire hose and placed utilizing a Bobcat, Volvo PE5 roller and mechanized wacker. FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTING Limited field density tests were performed in accordance with D2922 (Nuclear Gauge Method). Our test results indicate that, in the locations tested, soils have been compacted to at least 90% relative compaction, as determined by ASTM D1557, (Procedure A). The reported test results are representative of the soil conditions at the locations tested. Our observation and field density testing methods are in accordance with normally accepted procedures. The accuracy of the relative compaction values is subject to the precision limitations of the ASTM test methods. The accuracy of the maximum dry density determination (ASTM D1557) is discussed in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Section 4, Volume 04.08, entitled, Soil and Rock; Building Stones. Variations of relative compaction values should be expected, laterally and vertically, from actual test locations. TESTING SUMMARY In general, it is our opinion, based on the placement procedure and the test data collected, the fill soils tested, at the locations tested, were compacted to a minimum of 90% relative compaction (based on ASTM D1557, Procedure A). If you have any questions regarding this report, or if we can be of further service, please do not hesitate to contact us. We hope the report provides you with the necessary information to continue with the development of the project. Sincerely, ENGINEERING DESIGN GROUP Erin Rist Steven B.
