How to Watch Watch the livestream and replay past meetings on the city website, www.carlsbadca.gov How to Participate • Per State of California Executive Order N-29-20, and in the interest of public health and safety, we are temporarily taking actions to prevent and mitigate the effects of the COVID- 19 pandemic by holding senior commission meetings and other public meetings electronically or by teleconferencing. • All public meetings will comply with public noticing requirements in the Brown Act and will be made accessible electronically to all members of the public seeking to observe and address the senior commission. • Senior commission meetings can be watched via livestream or replayed on the city website at www.carlsbadca.gov. • You can participate in the meeting by e-mailing your comments to parks and recreation department at parksandrec@carlsbadca.gov prior to commencement of the agenda item. Your comment will be transmitted to the senior commission at the start of the agenda item. • If you desire to have your comment read into the record at the senior commission meeting, please indicate so in the first line of your e-mail and limit your e-mail to 500 words or less. • Emails will be read for three minutes each, unless the presiding officer (usually the chair) changes that time. • These procedures shall remain in place during the period in which state or local health officials have imposed or recommended social distancing measures. "All persons requiring assistance or auxiliary aids in order to effectively participate may contact senior commission at least 24 hours prior to the meeting to arrange for reasonable accommodations." CONSENT CALENDAR None All items listed under consent calendar are considered routine and will be enacted by one motion as listed, unless an item is requested to be removed for discussion by a commission member. PUBLIC COMMENT: In conformance with the Brown Act and California Executive Order No. N-29-20, a total of 15 minutes is provided so members of the public participate in the meeting by submitting comments as provided on the front page of this agenda. The clerk will read comments as requested up to a total of 15 minutes. All other comments requested to be read by the clerk will trail until the end of the meeting. In conformance with the Brown Act, no Council action can occur on these items. VII. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS: 1. SR # 0321-1 ELECTION OF SENIOR COMMISSION OFFICERS – (ACTION) Commission will solicit nominations for, and elect Commission Officers for the 2021 calendar year. 2. SR # 0321-2 DEPARTMENT REPORT The Commission will receive a report on recently completed and upcoming Senior Center activities and programs, as well as other topics of interest by Recreation Area Manager Margaret Hamer. The remainder of the categories is for reporting purposes. In conformance with the Brown Act, no public testimony and no commission action can occur on these items. A transportation enhancement is also under review. Online tools are still open for review and input here: www.carlsbadca.gov/agefriendlycarlsbad Health and Wellness Ask the Orthopedic Surgeon Retired orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joel Heiser volunteers to provide customers a free 15-minute Zoom to provide consultation and advice. “24K” Zumba Gold with Saleemah Every Friday Saleemah leads the cha-cha, merengue, salsa and swing to get customers moving their feet, clapping their hands and having fun, so much fun that they forget they’re exercising! The “seated” version which was added on Mondays for customers who have limited movement and balance will continue in March. Take an Honest Inventory of Yourself Presenter Michele Downey, RN, MAC, LMFT provided a guided look at exploring the inventory concept. Michele finds this to be one of the most useful tools she can give clients and adds that this is different than finding fault or blame. Education Morningstar Investment Education Lectures Morningstar guidance is available for free from the City of Carlsbad Libraries’ online database. Cardholders are not required to be Carlsbad residents. Instructor Shelley Murasko does a monthly examination of Morningstar’s changing information to guide investors. • Feb. 8: Mutual Fund Investing Basics • Feb. 22: Top Articles & Special Investing Topics UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning Weekly lectures from the UCSD Osher database are zoomed in for viewing and stimulating discussions after the lecture. Customers from ages 51 – 88 enjoy these lectures and reviews. • Feb. 3: Changes in Sleep with Age: Causes, Consequences and Remedies • Feb. 10: Reach for the Stars: Opera Stars I Have Known • Feb. 17: Reach for the Stars: Opera Greats of the Past • Feb. 24: Osteoarthritis: Future Directions Virtual Culinary Lab The virtual “Lunch at the Culinary Lab” continues with great success. February registration increased from 40 to 59, 19 additional students who zoomed in weekly with chef Kyle who shares his magical recipes and culinary tips for delicious food! Recipe theme included: • Feb 4: Chinese Cuisine • Feb. 11: Sweets & Treats • Feb. 18: Mardi Gras • Feb. 25: Italian Cuisine Technology Carlsbad Tech Users Group CTUG included 20 tech users on the virtual zoom platform to discuss all things technical that are interesting from computers to smart homes. In addition to hardware, they discuss applications, security, streaming options, cutting the cable, social media and all software issues. Digital Photo & Tech Classes • Feb. 17: Understanding Cloud Storage & Backup Class provided an overview of cloud-based storage solutions (e.g. iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive). Instructor, Mike McMahon also discussed cloud-based backup services (e.g. Carbonite). 77 students attended this class. • Feb. 24: Free Photo Editing in Windows 10 highlighted the photo editor available in the software at no additional cost. Instructor Mike McMahon explained how to take full advantage of the Windows 10 Photos app. The Photos App can handle the most common photo editing functions (e.g. cropping, exposure adjustment, adding creative filters). Teens Teach Tech Pacific Ridge High School students returned virtually to provide guidance on all tech needs. February sessions included tech tips, tricks and know-hows and twelve new customers joined for the group. Social Inclusion Heart Healthy Produce Distribution On Friday, February 12, the Senior Center partnered with the Carlsbad Strawberry Company to provide healthy vegetables and fruit to extend nutrition over the President’s Day holiday. Healthy recipes were included along with the produce box. Bingo Virtual bingo is hosted every Tuesdays at 1 p.m. with the Carlsbad crew to keep customers’ gaming skills sharp while visiting with friends on the virtual platform. Music Mondays “Music Mondays” continues as a to fill the void of live entertainment that customers are missing from the dining room. On select Mondays a musician zooms in with meal customers and whoever else wants to join in for live chat and entertainment. Upcoming Events • AARP curbside Tax-Aid Assistance starting on March 2, 2021. • National Nutritional Month – topics will be shared on Culinary Lab Classes and meal customers. • Fun Fridays – weekly themes to share the TGIF spirit with customers curbside o March 5: Derby Hat Day (communications will be filming service this day) o March 12: St. Patty’s Day Apparel o March 19: Mystery Quiz Day o March 26: Wear Stripes Day • Music Mondays is a virtual concert with live performers to lift Carlsbad spirits. o March 1: Chicago Tony and Dan o March 15: Irish Music by Lou o March 29: Fabulous Frank Program Attendance during the closure Over 1,500 new and returning customers logged in for virtual programs or participated in the meal program that has served over to 45,000 meals to date.
