HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-12-03; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: ARTS COMMISSION CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION MEETING Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020 Teleconference CALL TO ORDER: Chair Laurenn Barker called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m . ROLL CALL: Commissioners Barker, Snyder, Schmidt, White, Chamberlain and Nassiri (Jadhav -Absent) STAFF PRESENT: Richard Schultz, Cultural Arts Manager Tonya Rodzach, Public Art Coordinator Megan Gilby, Community Arts Coordinator Daisy Hernandez, Senior Office Specialist APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Arts Commission meeting held November 5, 2020. Motion by Commissioner Snyder, seconded by Commissioner White, to approve the Minutes of the meeting held on November 5, 2020 as presented. Motion carried, 6/0/1/0 (Jadhav -Absent). PUBLIC COMMENT: None. UPDATE ON TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART PROJECTS: Public Art Coordinator Rodzach provided a brief update on the current public art projects including a pilot program with the Carlsbad Village Association focused on matching local artists with businesses to artistically "activate" store fronts. DISCUSSION: COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS EXPLORATION OF FUTURE DIRECTION: Cultural Arts Manager Schultz and Community Arts Coordinator Gilby led a discussion exploring the role of Community Arts Grants with an emphasis on being responsive to community needs. This discussion will be ongoing at future meetings. CHAIR REPORT: With the current physical separation, hardships and sadness that the community is facing, Chair Barker wished everyone a season of the beauty of the arts in all their wonderful forms. She also thanked the Commissioners for their participation on the Arts Commission, as well as the support provided by the Cultural Arts staff. CULTUAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT: Richard Schultz addressed the fraudulent "golden eggs treasure hunt" that was positioned around town in the weeks prior to the meeting. He clarified that the City of Carlsbad and Cultural Arts were not affiliated in any way with this activity which was reported to the Page 2 of 2 Arts Commission Minutes ofthe Dec. 3, 2020 Meeting Carlsbad Police Department. He also informed the Commissioners the County's return to the purple tier resulted in the closing of the Cannon Gallery. The current exhibit runs through March 7; he expressed optimism for a reopening in the new year. He acknowledged the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation for sponsoring the successful ukulele program. He concluded by wishing a "Happy Holidays" from the Cultural Arts team. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioners shared the highlights of their participation and attendance at local virtual arts events and programs.
