Senior Center Department and Statistics Report 8 of 12 ` Senior Center REPORT June 3, 2021 GENERAL Age-Friendly Carlsbad The Carlsbad Age-Friendly DRAFT Action Plan was completed and reviewed in the fourth Age-Friendly Workshop on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 2 p.m. The workshop provides residents the opportunity for additional feedback and the report can be found online on the Age-Friendly website here: www.carlsbadca.gov/agefriendlycarlsbad. Health and Wellness “24K” Zumba Gold and Zumba Seated with Saleemah Every Monday and Friday Saleemah leads the cha-cha, merengue, salsa and swing to get customers moving their feet or from their seat, clapping their hands and having fun, so much fun that they forget they’re exercising! The “seated” version which was added on Mondays for customers who have limited movement and balance will continue in June. Ask the Orthopedic Surgeon Retired orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joel Heiser volunteers to provide customers a free 15-minute Zoom to provide consultation and advice. Healthier Living with Chronic Conditions: Manage Your Health, Not Let Your Health Manage You Nearly 60% of Americans have a chronic health condition such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and anxiety among others. The San Diego County Live Well program will shared the good news that there are simple things that can be done to feel better, improve quality of life and take control of health, rather than letting it control you. Education Morningstar Investment Education Lectures Morningstar guidance is available for free from the City of Carlsbad Libraries’ online database. Cardholders are not required to be Carlsbad residents. Instructor Shelley Murasko does a monthly examination of Morningstar’s changing information to guide investors. • May 17: Mutual Fund Investing Basics • May 24: Top Morningstar Articles & Other Special Investing Topics UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning Weekly lectures from the UCSD Osher database are zoomed in for viewing and stimulating discussions after the lecture. Customers from ages 51 – 88 enjoy these lectures and reviews. • May 5: Five Musical Countries–Mexico • May 12: Shakespeare and History’s King John Part 1 • May 19: Shakespeare and History’s King John Part 2 • May 26: The Greatest Generation–NY Baseball in the Fifties 9 of 12 Virtual Culinary Lab The virtual “Lunch at the Culinary Lab” continues with great success. May attracted 47 cooking enthusiasts to join chef Kyle share his magical recipes and culinary tips for delicious food! Recipe themes included: • May 6: Brazilian • May 13: Czech • May 20: Māori • May 27: Somali Technology Digital Photo & Tech Classes • May 19: Smart Phone Editing. 75 students joined Mike McMahon on zoom to learn how to use basic smart phone edits like cropping and exposure adjustment to make photos look great. • May 26: 67 students zoomed in for coverage of Google Photos Essentials. Social Inclusion Bingo Virtual bingo is hosted every Tuesdays at 1 p.m. with the Carlsbad crew to keep customers’ gaming skills sharp while visiting with friends on the virtual platform. Music Mondays “Music Mondays” continues to fill the void of live entertainment that customers are missing from the dining room. On select Mondays a musician zooms in with meal customers and whoever else wants to join in for live chat and entertainment.
