JOB NO. ~)5 a IRRIGATION SPECIFICATIONS NOTE: THESE SPECIFICATIONS ARE TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CITY OF CARLSBAD LANDSCAPE MANUAL AND THE CMWD 6191 SPECIFICATIONS TITLED "CARLSBAD RECLAMATION RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF RECLAIMED WATER SYSTEMS". PART 1,00 GENERAL NOTES 1.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. The contractor shall furnish all labor, tools, machinery, materials, and processes necessary to complete the Irrigation system described herein and shown on the Drawings. 1.02. STANDARDS A. All work and materials shall be in full accordance with the latest rules and regulations of the National Electric Code; the Uniform Plumbing Code, published by the Western Plumbing Officials Association: and other applicable State or local laws or regulations. Nothing in these Drawings or Specifications is to be construed to permit work not conforming to these codes. B. Any existing buildings, equipment, piping, pipe covering, sewers, sidewalks, landscaping, damaged by the Contractor during the course of his work shall be replaced or repaired by the Contractor in a manner satisfactory to the Owner's Representative and at Contractor's own expense, and before the final payment is made. The Contractor shall be responsible for .damage caused by leaks in the piping systems being installed or having been installed by him. He shall repair, at his own expense, all damage so caused, in a manner satisfactory to Owner's Representative. 1.03 DEFINIIIONS A. Owner's Representive : Qualified person overseeing construction and installation of all landscape elements. Contractor shall contact the Owner to ascertain name of individual or firm as overseeing party. 1.04 EXPLANATION OF DRAWINGS: A. Due to the scale of Drawings, it is not possible to show all offsets, fittings, or sleeves which may be required. Carefully inspect all conditions of work according to the actual site and plan installation and accordingly furnish all pipe and fittings to meet the systems requirements. Work shall be installed in such a manner as to avoid conflicts between irrigation systems, planting, and architectural features. 1.os INSTRUCTION A. After the system has been installed and approved, Contractor shall instruct the Owner's Representative in complete operation and maintenance of the irrigation system. 1.06 SUBMITTAL$ A. Substitutions: Submit 3 copies of catalog information on materials which are to be submitted for substitution. No substitution will be permitted without prior written approval by the Owner's Representative. Complete material list shall be submitted prior to performing any work. B. Record Drawings; 1. The Subcontractor shall maintain in good order in the field office one complete set of black line prints of all sprinkler drawings which form a part of the Contract, showing all water lines, sprinklers, valves, controllers, and stub•outs. In the event any work is not installed as indicated on the Drawings, such work shall be corrected and dimensioned accurately from the building walls on these Record Drawings. 2. All underground stut,..outs for future connections shall be located and dimensioned accurately from building walls on all Record Drawings. 3. Upon completion of the irrigation work (prior to planting work) submit blackline as-builts to City for approval. Landscape architect shall then revise city mylars to reflect blackline as-builts. PART 2.00 MATERIALS 2.01 PIPE ANO EIIIINGS A. Main lines (constant pressure) 2 • and larger shall be Alertline polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) 1120-160/200 psi, Class 315 with solvent weld connections; 1/2" to 1 1/2" shall be PVC Sch. 40. 1. Solvent Weld Main Line: At changes in direction or branch mains, use appropriate Schedule 40 PVC fittings as approved by the Uniform Plumbing Code. B. Lateral lines (non•pressure) shall be Class 200 PVC plastic Alertline pipe with Schedule 40, Type I, Grade I, PVC solvent weld fittings. C. Flexible tubing shall be PVC Flexible, manufactured by Salco or equal. D. Connections between main lines and RCV's shall be of Schedule 80 PVC (threaded both ends) nipples and fittings. E Risers shall be as follows: Schedule 80 PVC threaded nipples and Schedule 80 PVC ells as shown in the construction details. 2.02 CONTROLLERS A. Controllers shall be as listed on the Drawings. 2.03 VALVES A. Remote control valves shall be as indicated on the Drawings. Controllers shall be installed as per manufacturer's specifications and as shown on the Drawings. B. BALL VALVES: Shall be as specified on plans. C. PRESSURE REDUCING VALVES: Shall be diaphram type, bronze construction with integral stainless steel and union. Size and model as specified per plan. D. Quick Coupler valves shall be as listed on the Drawings. 2.04 CONTROLWIBE A. Copper with UF approval for direct burial in ground, size #14- gauge. Common ground wire shall have white insulating jacket; control wire shall be made with 3M #3577 Scotchlok seal packs. Provide a separate ground wire for each controller, install per valve manufacturer's specifications and wire chart. B. 11 O volt or higher voltage line connections shall be made with 3M direct bury splice, Rain Bird pentite connectors, or similar dry splice methods. 2.05 BOXES FOR REMOTE CONTROL VALVE A. Amtek , or Carson plastic valve box with plasti\, lid. Lid shall be marked: "Irrigation Control Valve". One valve per box. Per CMWD the plastic lid must be purple bolt-down covers. 2.06 SPRINKLER HEADS A. All sprinkler heads shall be as specified on the Drawings. 2.07 BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE A. Backflow prevention device shall be as specified per Drawings. 2.oa MISCELLANEOUS INSTALLATION MATERIAi$ A. Solvent cement and primer for solvent weld joints shall be of make and type approved by manufacturer(s) of pipe and fittings. Cement shall be maintained at proper consistency throughout use. B. Lubricant for assembling rubber ring seal joints shall be of make and type approved by manufacturer of pipe. C. Pipe joint compound shall be non-hardenina. non-toxic materials designed specifically for use on threadPd connections in water carrying pipe. Performance shall be the same as Teflon Tape. 2.09 MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT A. Provide all equipment called for by the Drawings, B. EMMITERS: Shall be as specified on drawings. C. PRESSURE GAUGES: Pressure gauges shall be hermetically sealed, with shatterproof face., Type and size as shown on plans. D. STRAINER: Emitter strainer shall have a bronze/ plastic housing, with removable screen. PART 3.oo · INSTALLATION 3.01 PREPARATION A. Schedule and coordinate placement of materials and equipment in manner to effect the earliest completion of work in conformance with construction and progress schedule. 3.02 HANDLING AND STORAGE A. Protect work and materials from damage during construction and storage as directed by Owner's Representative. B. Handle plastic pipe carefully; especially protect it from prolonged exposure to sunlight. 3.03 LAYOUT A. Lay out work as accurately as possible in accordance with diagrammatic drawings. B. Where site conditions do not permit location of piping, valves, and heads where shown, notify Owner's Representative immediately and determine relocation in joint conference. C. Run pipelines and automatic control wiring in common trenches wherever practical. 3.04 EXCAVATING AND TRENCHING A. Excavation shall be in all cases ample in size to permit the pipes to be laid at the elevations intended and to permit ample space for joining. 8. Make trenches for pipelines deep enough to provide minimum cover from finish grade as follows: 1. ~ minimum cover over pressure main lines to control valves and quick coupling valves (including hose bibbs). 2. .l.f2'.'.minimum cover over control wires from controller to valves. 3. 12-". minimum cover over non-pressurized lateral lines to sprinkler heads. C. Restore surfaces, existing underground installations, etc., damaged or cut as a result of excavations, to original conditions in manner approved by Owner's Representative. D. Where other utilities interfere with irrigation trenching 2.nd pipe work, adjust the trench depth as instructed by Owner's Representative. 3.05 ASSEMBLING PIPELINES A. All pipe shall be assembled free from dirt and pipe scale. Field cut ends shall be reamed only to full diameter with rough edges and burrs removed. B. Solvent Weld Joint: Each installer shall be properly trained in techniques for making correct joints prior to performing work on the site: 1. Prepare joint by first making sure the pipe end is square, then deburring the pipe end and cleaning pipe and fitting of dirt, dust, and moisture. 2. Dry.insert pipe into fitting to check for missizing. Pipe should enter fitting 1 /3 to 2/3 depth of socket. 3. Coat the inside socket surface of the fitting and the external surface of the male end of the pipe with P-70 primer (manufactured by Weld-On). Then without delay, apply Weld·On 711 cement liberally to the male end of the pipe and also apply 711 cement lightly to the inside of the socket. 4. Insert pipe immediately into fitting and turn 1 /4 turn to distribute cement and remove air bubbles. The pipe must seat to the bottom of the socket and fitting. Check alignment of the fitting. Pipe and fitting shall be aligned properly without strain to either. 5. Hold joint still for approximately thirty (30) seconds and then wipe the excess cement from the pipe and fitting. 6. Cure joint a minimum of thirty (30) minutes before handling and at least six (6) hours before allowing water in the pipe. C. Threaded Joint: 1. Field threading of plastic pipe or fittings is not permitted. Factory•lormed threads only will be permitted. 2. Factory-made nipples shall be used wherever possible. Field-cut threads in metallic pipe will be permitted only where absolutely necessary. When field threading, cut threads accurately on axis with sharp dies. 3. All threaded joints shall be made up with pipe joint compound. Apply compound to male threads only. 4. Where assembling metallic pipe to metallic fitting or valve, no more than three (3) full threads shall show when Joint is made up. 5. Where assembling to threaded plastic fitting, take up joint no more than one full turn beyond hand tight. 6. Where assembling soft metal (brass or copper) or plastic pipe, use strap type friction wrench only; do not use metal·jawed wrench. E Cap or plug openings as pipeline is assembled to prevent entrance of dirt obstruction. Remove caps or plugs only when necessary to continue assembly. F. Where pipes or control wires pass through sleeves, provide removable non•decaying plug at ends of sleeve to prevent entrance of earth. 3.06 REMOTE CONTROL VALVES A. Install where shown on Drawings and group together where practical. Limit one remote control valve per box. B. Locate valve boxes 12" from and perpendicular to walk edges, buildings and walls. Provide 6" between valve boxes where valves are grouped together. C. Thoroughly flush main line before installing valve. D. Install in shrub or ground cover areas where possible. E Label control line wire at each valve with a 21/4" X 2 3/4" polyurethane I.D. tag, indicating identification number of valve (controller and station number). Attach label to control wire. 3.07 AUTOMATIC CONTROL WIRING A. Run wires along mains wherever practical. Tie wires in bundles with pipe wrapping tape at 1 O' intervals and allow slack for contraction between strappings. B. Loop a minimum of three (3) feet of extra wire in each valve box; both control wire and ground wire. C. Connections shall be made by crimping bare wires with brass c-.onnectors and sealing with epoxy resin sealer packs. D. Splicing will be permitted only on runs exceeding 2500'. Locate all splices at valve locations within valve boxes. E Where control wires pass under paving, they shall pass through Schedule 40 electrical PVC conduit. 3.08 AUTOMATIC CONTROLLER A. Provide and install automatic irrigation controller in approximate locations shown on Drawings. The exact location will be determined on the site by the Owne~s Representative prior to construction. Provide conduit and wire and connect to 120 volt switch (power by others) accessible to controller for ease of maintenance. B. Connect control wires to controller in sequential arrangement according to assigned identification number of valve. Each control line wire shall be labeled at controller with a permanent non-fading label indicating station number of valve controlled. Attach label to control wire. 3.09 TESTING A. Perform test as specified below. Remake any faulty joints with all new materials. Use of cement or caulking to seal leaks is absolutely prohibited. . 3.10 BACKFILUNG A. Backfill only after piping has been tested, inspected, and approved. B. Backfill material shall be the earth excavated from the trenches, free from rocks larger than 2 inches in maximum dimension, concrete chunks, and other foreign or coarse materials. Carefully select backfill that is 10 be placed next to plastic pipe to avoid any sharp objects which may damage the pipe. C. All pipe under asphalt paving shall be backfilled with 4" of clean sand on all sides of pipe, or sleeve. D. Place backfill materials in 6" layers and compact tamping to a minimum compaction per City Inspector. E Dress areas to finish grades and remove excess soil, rocks, or debris remaining after backfill is completed. F. If settlement occurs along trenches, and adjustments in pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, soil, sod, or paving are necessary to bring the system, soil, sod or paving to the proper level of the permanent grade, Subcontractor, as part of the work under this contract, shall make all adjustments without extra cost to the Owner. 3.11 SPRINKLER HEADS AND QUICK COUPLER VALVES A. Thoroughly flush lines before installing heads or quick couplers. B. Locate heads and quick couplers as shown in the Drawings and details. C. Adjust sprinkler heads for proper distribution and trim such as to not spray onto walks, walls., etc .. D. Install lawn heads 2" above grade in seeded lawn area at time of installation. Lower to finished grade after turl is well established and as directed by Owner's Representative. E Contractor shall install anti-drain valves per the locations shown on the plans and/or as field conditions dictate to prevent low head drainage. 3.12 TESTS A. Center load piping with small amount of backfill to prevent arching or slipping under pressure. No fitting shall be covered. D. Apply the following tests after weld plastic pipe joints have cured at least 24 hours. 1. Test live (constant pressure) and quick coupling valve lines hydrostatically at I~ psi minimum. Test pressure will be maintained for a minimum of fu.lr(4')hours. At the end of the test period, the lines shall be restored to the original test pressure and the amount of pressure required to do so shall be measured. The lines shall be approved if the pressure loss is less than 5 psi. Contractor shall make repairs and repeat tests as necessary until test conditions are met. It shall be the responsibility of Irrigation Contractor to fill and repair all depressions and replace all necessary lawn and planting due to the settlement of irrigation trenches for one year following completion and acceptance of the job. B. Subcontractor shall also guarantee all materials, equipment, and workmanship furnished by him to be free of all defects of workmanship and materials, and shall agree to replace at his expense, at any time within one year after installation is accepted, any and a:I defective parts that may be found. 3.14 CLEAN UP A. When work of this section has been completed and at such other times as may be directed, remove all trash, debris, surplus mcterials, and equipment from site. .. Upon award of the contract a satisfactory work schedule shall be submitted to the Ownefs Representative for carrying out the work. No modifications shall be made to this schedule which have not been approved by the Owne(s Representative. B. Finish Qrading and landscape installation shall ba performed during those periods when weather and soil conditions are suitable in accordance with locally accepted horticultural practice. C. Quantities of plant materials are shown for convenience only, and not guaranteed, Symbols take precedence over quantities specified. Check and verify counts and supply sufficient number to fulfill intent of drawings. 1.06 CQORDINATIQN A. Prior to planting or finish grading , the Contractor shall ascertain the location of all underground utility lines. Conflicts between the location of underground lines and plant material shall be promptly brought to the attention of the Owner's Representative and appropriate adjustments made. B. Care shall be taken to coordinate the work at all times with other contractors working in and adjacent to the areas included in this contract. This is to insure an orderly and efficient installation procedure, and to minimize conflict with other construction operations. 1.07 STANDARDS A. All work shall be in strict accordance with sound nursery practice. Planting shall be pertormed by personnel familiar with planting procedures and under the supervision of a qualified planting foreman. The planting foreman shall be on the joo site whenever planting 1s in progress. B. Plant materials shall comply with the recommendations and requirements of ANSI 260.1, 1980 for type and species called for on planting plan. If plant material substitutions are accepted and are of less valueth2n those indicated or specified, the contract price will be adjusted in accordance with the provisions of the contract. 1.09 REJECTION Any materials and/or work may be rejected if, in th11 opinion of the Owner's Representative such does not meet the requirements of the specifications. All rejected materials shall be promptly removed from the site by the Contractor at his expense. Rejected work shall be redone and approved by the Owner's Representative. 1.10 PRQTECTIQN QFPLANIS A. Upon arrival at the site, plants shall be properly protected and maintained until planted, such that no deterioration from a healthy and vigorous condition occurs. a Planting areas and plants shall be protected against trespassing and damage of any kind. B. The work under this Contract will be accepted by the Ownefs Representative upon the satisfactory completion of all work, including maintenance, but exclusive of the guarantee of plant materials. 1.14 GUARANTEE ANP REPLACEMENT A. The Contractor shall guarantee that all trees planted under this contract shall be in good, healthy and flourishing condition ot active growth at the end ot one growing year from the date of acceptance as defined herein. B. All dead trees and trees that lose more than 30% of their original leaves, or as determined by the Owner's Representative, shall be replaced without cost to the Owner within (14) days of Notice. C. Any delay in the completion of any item ot work in the planting operations which extend the planting into more than one planting season shall extend the guarantee period correspondingly. D. Replacement plant material shall be of comparable quality and size to that which was originally installed. All plant material replaced shall be guaranteed for the original period, staning from the date of replacement. 1.15 $UBMITTALS Submit list with sources and quantities to Owners Representative of soil amendments, fertilizers, plant materials, seeds, and sod with quantities of each. PART 2 • MATERIALS 2.01 SOIL AMENDMENTS A. ·wood Residual Soil Amendment": shall be Nitrogen stablized from one of the following sources: Nitrogen stabilized Redwood sawdust, Redwood Bark fiber, fir/cedar sawdust, or fir/p,ne bark. Rates shall be as specified on plans. 8. Topsoil shall be on-site soil stripped and stockpiled during rough grading operations. If imported topsoil is required it shall have the following analysis: Organic content: 6% minimum ph range: 5.5 to 7.5 Salinity: 3.0 mmhos/cm or less Boron concentration: less than 1.0 p.p.m. SAR value: less than 6 and shall not contain weeds, debris, toxic material or other undesirable matter. D. Fertilizer (commercial) shall be a long lasting controlled release, plastic coated, uniform in composition, freeflowing, suitable for application with approved equipment , and shall contain the minimum available percentages by weight of plant food: N.P.K. Rates shall be as specified on plans. 2.02 PLANT MATERAJLS A. All plants shall be nursery grown in accordance with good horticultural practices, and shall be grown under climatic conditions similar to those in the locality of the project for at least one year. B. Plants shall be typical of their species or variety and shall have normal habits of growth. They shall be free of disease, insect pests or their eggs, sun-scale injures, abrasions or disfigurements, and shall have healthy, well-developed root systems. C Trees shall have straight trunks unless otheiwise specified, with the leader intact. undamaged, and uncut Damaged or pruned terminal leaders will be cause for rejection. D. All plants shall conform lo the measurements specified on the Planting Plan except that plants larger than specified may be used. Use of such plants shall not 11'<,rea,e.the contract price. E. Container stock (1,5, 15. and box size) shall have grown in the containers in which delivered tor at least 6 months but not over two years, and shall in no case be accepted ii a rootbound conaition has become prevalent. "Mulch" shall be as specified on plans, and free of sticks, stones, clay or other foreign material. C. "Herbicide" shall be Roundup by Monsanto Corporation. D. Mow strios shall be redwood construction heart or concrete as specified on plans. E "Nails", "wire", and •staples·, and 'turnbuckles" shall be galvanized. F. Installer must examine the subgrade, verify the elevation and observe the conditions under which work is to be pertormed. If s.,e conditions vary from those shown on the drawings, contractor shall notify the Owner's Representative and General Contractor before commencing work. B. When conditions detrimental to plant growth are encountered or loreseen such as but not limited to, rubble t,11, engineering fill, adverse drainage conditions or obstructions, notify Owne~s Representative before planting. 3.02 WEEP KILL A. Irrigate site normally for two weeks to germinate weeds. any changes in locations of proposed planting, as may be required, wrthout additional cost to the Owner. 3.06 EXCAVATION QE PLANTING PITS ANO BEDS A. All excavated holes shall have vertical sides with roughened surfaces and shall be of the minimum sizes indicated on drawings. Holes shall be, in all cases, large enough to permit handling and planting without injury er breakage ot root balls or roots. B. Under no circumstances shall any plant pit or bed remain open overnight unless it is properly barricaded. C. Fill excavations for trees and shrubs with water and allow to percolate out before planting. Should percolation be insufficient to accommodate adequate drainage, notify Owner's Representative. D. Holes for groundcaver shall be large enough to allow for spreading of roots. E All excess material shall be legally disposed of ott-sita by the Contractor. 3.07 Pl ANTING A. Plants shall be kept adequately watered until time of acceptance. 3.08 Ml/l CHING Apply contact herbicide per manufacturer. Irrigate soil normally aoa,n for a period of two weeks past active period of the hertl1c1de. Apply contact hertliclde again per the manufacturer.Herbicide applicator shall be licensed by the State of CA Mulch shall be placed around all trees, shrubs and groundcovers within 2.1.hours after any plan1ing and shall be applied uniformly to cover entire planting bed areas to a depth of 3·. Soil preparation shall occur not more than 30 days prior to planting. All planting areas with asphalt. engineered till or other deletorious material below shall be thouroughly dug out through sub-base material and backfilled with topsoil. B. Apply soH amendments recommended in soils test, evenly and at the specified application rates (for bidding purposes see F). C. It area is to receive sod or seeding, soil amendments shall not be added until immediately prior to sod or seed installation. D. Rototill top 6" of soil to a loose and friable consistency. Finish grading atter soil preparation shall establish final flowlines and gradients for uniform water drainage. 9. Finished grades indicated on plans are the required grades after soil preparation, soil compaction, and settling exclusive of mulch. C. Final finish grading shall insure positive drainage of the site with all surface drainage away from buildings, walls, and toward roadways, drains and catch basins. 0. Mounds shall be shaped and sculpted to create a smooth and irregular natural mountain effect and shall be of elevations as indicated. 3.05 LAYOUT A. Layout of all trees, shrub masses, headerboards, and other landscape elements shall be staked by the Contractor in the field for approval by the Owne(s Representative prior to installation. B. Plant arrangements are shown on drawings. However, final location and/or orientation of any or all plants shall b& as directed by the Owne(s Representative. Contractor shall make 3.09 3.10 FINAi. During the maintenance period, any plant indicating weakness or probablify of dying. or have lost more than 30% of leaves shall be replaced by the Contractor at his own expense. G Tree stakes which for any reason are damaged or rondored inadequate for support shall be repaired and restored to their original conditions. Tree ties shall be attached securely. H. Constant diligence shall be maintained far the advent ot disease, insects, and/or rodent infestations and proper preventative or control measures takon. I.
