Dear Ms. Dahya-Keshav: In accordance with your authorization, Twining Consulting, Inc. (Twining) has provided testing and observation services during the earthwork operations of the associated site improvements for the Springfield Suites project in Carlsbad, California. This report presents the results of laboratory testing, field compaction testing, and summarizes our field observations for the swimming pool, underground utilities, hardscape and pavements. We previously issued a Final As-Graded Geotechnical Report, dated November 16, 2018 for the building pad portion of the project. Field density testing and site improvement earthwork covered by this report were performed between the dates of November 7, 2018 and October 28, 2020. OBSERVATIONS AND TESTING A qualified representative of Twining was onsite during the final grading operations. The soil exposed during excavations for the final grading were consistent with the soil types encountered in the referenced geotechnical report. The soil generally consisted of competent brown to light reddish brown, medium dense to dense silty sand. The native material is acceptable for use as engineered fill. Any oversize objects encountered during excavations were removed. Samples of the excavated soil were taken to Twining’s laboratory for maximum density/optimum moisture testing. I\ ••TWINING CONSULTING 15950 Bernardo Center Drive, Suite F Tel 858.385.1711 San Diego, CA 92127 Fax 858.974.3752 Twining observed and verified that over-excavations for the paving and hardscape extended a minimum of one foot below the bottom of finish subgrade. Upon reaching the over-excavation bottoms, the exposed materials were scarified to a depth of 6 inches and recompacted to at least 90% of the relative maximum density based on ASTM D 1557. Prior to placement of fill, a Twining representative confirmed that the bottoms were firm and unyielding. The fill materials were placed in a maximum of 8-inch lifts, moisture conditioned and mechanically compacted to at least 90% of the relative maximum density per ASTM D 1557 using a vibratory sheepsfoot roller, wacker-type compactor, sheepfoot roller, or fully-loaded rubber-tire loader. Fill materials were placed in approximately 8 to 10-inch lifts until finish grade elevations were achieved. Fill materials generally consisted of native subgrade material derived from the excavation of utility lines or imported crushed miscellaneous base (CMB) material. Field density tests were taken to verify proper compaction of the fill. In-place density tests were performed in accordance with the procedures outlined in ASTM D 6938 (Nuclear Gauge Method) and ASTM D 1556 (Sand Cone Method). The results of in-place testing indicate that the excavation bottoms, utility trench backfill and remaining finish grading fill were compacted to at least 90 percent of the maximum density obtained by the modified proctor test as determined by ASTM D 1557, or to at least 95 percent maximum dry density in pavement areas, which meets the minimum compaction requirements presented in the project plans. Utility trench backfill observation and testing were performed at the utility tie-ins along Carlsbad Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue. The base and AC were compacted to at least 95% of the relative maximum density based on ASTM D1557 using a vibratory smooth drum roller. The results of the laboratory testing are shown in Table 1 and the results of field density testing are provided in Table 2. In-situ materials and fill materials were tested in the laboratory for maximum dry density and optimum moisture content in accordance with ASTM D 1557. The results of the laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. The approximate locations of the in-place density tests are presented in Figure 1. In-place density tests were performed in accordance with the procedures outlined in ASTM D 6938 (Nuclear Method). The results of in-place density testing indicate that the soils tested were compacted to at least 90 percent, or to 95 percent in pavement areas as determined by ASTM D1557, which meets the minimum compaction requirements as presented in the referenced geotechnical engineering report. Fill soils were also probed between test locations to check consistency between test locations. Geotechnical engineering services described in this report were provided under the direction of a Registered Geotechnical Engineer. Testing services performed by Twining were conducted in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical principles and practices. No other warranty, expressed or implied, is made.
