HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-05-06; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: ARTS COMMISSION CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION MEETING Thursday, May 6, 2021 Teleconference CALL TO ORDER: Chair Laurenn Barker called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Barker, Snyder, Jadhav, Chamberlain, Nassiri, Chung and Miringoff. STAFF PRESENT: Richard Schultz, Cultural Arts Manager Daisy Hernandez, Senior Office Specialist Tonya Rodzach, Public Art Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Arts Commission meeting held April 1, 2021. Motion by Commissioner Snyder, seconded by Commissioner Miringoff, to approve the Minutes of the regular meeting held on May 6, 2021. Motion carried, 7 /0/0/0. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. CULTURAL ARTS MASTER PLAN UPDATE: Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz shared a PowerPoint with the commissioners that was brought to City Council on April 13, 2021, regarding the Cultural Arts Master Plan. The presentation reviewed the Master Plan, its status after the last two fiscal years, and a sampling of what programming was presented, developed, and the next initiatives that the Cultural Arts office will launch. To date, Cultural Arts staff has started, begun to develop, or completed more than one-third of the 49 initiatives and seven of the Top Ten initiatives. PUBLIC ART UPDATE: Tonya Rodzach presented the commissioners with an overview of Permanent Public Art, conservation and maintenance, and Temporary Public Art. The presentation reviewed recent permanent public art such as the California Quail and Cone and the Myriad and Manzanita by Michael Mclaughlin. The presentation closed with a special presentation from Carlsbad Village Association Executive Director Christine Davis, who shared many of the works of art that were featured in Carlsbad Village storefronts as part of the Temporary Pop-up Art Experience. CHAIR REPORT: Chair Barker wanted to compliment both Schultz and Rodzach, and the entire Cultural Arts staff, for maintaining such a vibrant presence despite the pandemic, financial challenges, and staffing changes. Page 2 of 2 Arts Commission Minutes of the May 6, 2021 Meeting CULTUAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT: Schutz reminded all commissioners that the Cultural Arts e-newsletter lists all current and upcoming programming, including the Family Open Studios workshop with Barb Wills. The two newest commissioners, Chung and Miringoff, would be receiving their orientation soon . Cultural Arts had recently been asked to participate in the expansion of the city's memorial program which included an art cairn. Finally, TGIF in Your Backyard is a placeholder until TGIF could return to the parks, anticipated in 2022. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioners shared the highlights of their participation and attendance at local in-person arts events and programs since the beginning of the pandemic.
