LOCATION
DETECT-A-FIRE5 Units are precision temperature
sensors. They must be mounted in an area (normally a
ceiling) so that:
The detector spacing complies with both system
requirements and requirements of the agency having
local jurisdiction.
The thermal air path to the shell is not obstructed.
Spacing per UL, FM, and UL of Canada is shown in
Table 1. Distances given are for between units on smooth
ceilings. Distances from partitions or walls are half that
shown. To assure that all spacing requirements are met,
consult the authority having local jurisdiction.
MOUNTING
Detect-A-Fire units are not position sensitive. Horizontal
and vertical detectors refer to the most common mount-
ing configuration for that unit. However, each type can be
mounted either horizontally or vertically depending on the
application and installation requirements.
Not all units are suitable for all hazard location applica-
tions. Refer to Table 2 and markings on the detector for
hazardous location suitability.

INSTALLATION
Series 27120 and 27121 Series 28020 and 28021
Kidde-Fenwal recommends that standard 4-inch octagonal
outlet boxes be used to mount detectors.
Attach detector to outlet box cover through a 0.875 inch
diameter hole and using two 4-14 NPT retainer nuts as indi-
cated.
Connect system wiring to detector per Figure 3 and applica-
ble electrical codes.
Ordinary Locations: The DETECT-A-FIRE Units are to be
installed in grounded metallic junction boxes only. They are
to be secured to the boxes using two lock nuts, one on
either side of the mounting plate. DETECT-A-FIRE Units are
not to be installed in non-metallic junction boxes.
Hazardous Locations: For Class I, Division 1 and 2 locations
- install the DETECT-A-FIRE Unit in a listed explosion-proof
enclosure with a minimum thread engagement of five full
turns. No non-conductive material is to be placed on the
threaded joint of the DETECT-A-FIRE Unit or in the listed
explosion-proof enclosure. For Division 2 locations — assure
that a protective ground terminal is provided in the listed
explosion-proof enclosure when flexible metal conduit is
used.
Do not exceed a maximum torque without thread lubricant of
20 foot-pounds (27.1 Newton Meters).
Series 28000 units are similar to Series 27100 units except they
have two 3444 NPT threads for mounting.
The unit may be mounted as described above or may be
threaded into a 4-14 NPT tapped hole in the vessel wall or
threaded into a coupling brazed or welded to the vessel wall.
Field Wiring Requirement
Field wiring must be capable of withstanding the maximum
anticipated ambient temperature in the application.
FUNCTIONAL TEST
When used with automatic fire extinguishing systems first dis-
connect the initiator/solenoid leads from the panel and connect
a 24 VDC bulb to initiator terminals in the control unit. Heat the
D-A-F units with a heat lamp or other convenient source. When
the bulb in the control unit changes state, remove heat source
and allow D-A-F unit to cool. Reset control unit. Test lamp must
change state and stay changed after system is reset. Do not
reconnect initiator/ solenoid leads until all 0-A-F units have
cooled below set point as indicated by test lamp. When 0-A-F
units are used in other types of systems, disconnect them from
the system, connect a 24 VDC lamp and power source in series
with the D-A-F units and test with heat source as above. Make
sure that contacts have reset to normal condition before recon-
necting to system circuit.
I AWARNINGSI
In order to function plq,edy the sensing shell of the unit must remain flee ham paint, grease, oil, etc. Should such a build up cecur,
do not, under any circumstances, attempt to remove it. Replace
the unit.
Detectoi's mounted in an area subject to physical abuse or damage,
other than above, must be suitably protected without obsinicting the
thermal air path to the unit
Do not install the unit where the shell bwuld be physically damaged
by sand, grain, mcks etc.
Do not oveltorque the unit when installing.
Any detector that has been abused or damaged must be replaced.
Consult the factory for special precautions necessa,y for outdoor use
or moist environments.
ANY OF THE ABOVE COULD CHANGE THE FACTORY TEMPERA-
TURE SETTING, WHICH MAY RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE
AND/ OR PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A UNIT TO HAVE BEEN ABUSED OR DAM-
AGED AND NOT DISPLAY ANY OUTWARD INDICATION OF THE
DAMAGE. ALL UNITS SHOULD BE TESTED PERIODICALLY IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIA-
TION REQUIREMENTS (72E) OR THE AGENCY HAVING LOCAL
JURISDICTION.

DESCRIPTION
The Kidde BIO and Bli Manual Pull Stations are
high quality, reliable non-coded alarm initiating
devices based upon a proven design. They are con-
structed of heavy die-cast aluminum for long life and
reliability. These manual stations have the exclusive
Kidde look, with gloss red paint with raised white let-
tering, and black sides with a white turn border.
The 1310 station has a standard single pole single
throw switch, while the Bil has a double pole single
throw switch for local annunciation or remote signal-
ing. Switches are gold plated for reliability when
used in low current initiating circuits.
These manual stations are designed for quick, effi-
cient response by personnel in an emergency, while
the standard double action PUSH/PULL levers pre-
vent accidental operation. The keytock allows the
unit to be easily reset and tested, and the stations
are keyed to match the Kidde Scorpio,
PEGAsys, and OnonT' control panels.
Optional surface backboxes are available, which are
painted red and sized to match the manual stations.
The SGB-325 is UL Listed for indoor use, and the
SGB-32C cast aluminum weatherproof box is UL
Listed for outdoor use. The weatherproof box comes
with a gasket kit which allows either the BiD or Bil
to be mounted outdoors.

RELEASE LABELING
The Kidde BID and Bil Manual Pull Stations have a
unique labeling method which provides the installer
the greatest amount of flexibility. Six labels are
shipped with each station:
FIRE ALARM FIRE SYSTEM RELEASE
FM-200 RELEASE FE-13 RELEASE
CO2 RELEASE HALON 1301 RELEASE
These permanent, heavy-duty Lexan self-adhesive
labels are die-cut with raised lettering. During instal-
lation, the installer simply chooses the appropriate
label, removes the protective backing, and places
the label into the space on the top of the station.
This flexibility allows installations to be customized
for each customer, without the expense of having to
carry extra inventory.
OPERATION
The dual action BiD and Bli manual stations are
operated by simply pushing the PUSH bar inwards,
allowing the PULL handle to be grasped in a one-
handed motion. The handle is then pulled down as
far as it will go. If the optional breakrod is installed,
it would break at this point. The handle is now
locked in place, and is easily visible from up to 50
feet away. The handle is reset by opening the sta-
tion with the key, placing the handle in the normal
upright position, and re-locking the station.

Fenwal's MT and MT Strobe Series Multitone electronic
signals offer a choice of (8) nationally and internationally
recognized alerting sounds: Horn, Bell, March Time
Horn, Code-3 Tone, Code-3 Horn, Slow Whoop, Siren or
Hi/Lo Tone. Our Code-3 horn and tone patterns are
engineered to comply with NFPNANSI Temporal Pattern
specifications without requiring additional coding means.
With MT and MT Strobe Signals, one alarm appliance
meets most of your signaling needs.
The MT Strobes are designed for ADA (Americans with
Disabilities Act) applications with maximum performance,
reliability and cost-effectiveness while meeting or
exceeding the latest requirements of NFPA 72 (the
National Fire Alarm Code), ANSI 117.1 (the American
National Standard of Accessible and Usable Buildings
S
and Facilities) and UL Standard 1971 (Standard for
Signaling Devices for the Hearing Impaired). MT strobes,
when properly specified and installed in accordance with
NFPNANSI Standards, can provide the Equivalent
Facilitation allowed under ADA Accessibility Guidelines
(ADAAG General Section 2.2) by meeting or exceeding
the illumination which results from the ADA specified
strobe intensity of 75 candela at 50 feet. This is an
illumination of 0.030 lumens per square foot (foot-
candles).
Each MT and MT Strobe appliance has two user selec-
tive sound output levels: STANDARD dBA and HIGH
dBA. The MT/MT 4 (horn only) provides dual voltage
capability in one unit, 12 VDC or 24 VDC operation,
filtered or FWR. The MT Strobe Electronic Signals
operate with 24 VDC and may be used with filtered or
unfiltered (full-wave-rectified) input voltages. Separate
Alarm Tones
input terminals are available, shunt wires are provided to
enable both tone and strobe to operate simultaneously
from a single input.
The Multitone Strobe Signals are UL Listed for indoor
use, ceiling and wall mount, under Standard 1971 for
Emergency Devices for the Hearing Impaired and
Standard 464 for Audible Signal Appliances, and use a
Xenon flashtube with solid state circuitry enclosed in a
rugged Lexan® lens to provide maximum reliability for
effective visible signaling. Strobe lens markings available
for "Fire" and "Agent" labeled applications. Options
include LS, MS, and IS Series which are Listed at 15,
30, and 75 candela intensity to cover 20'x20', 30'x30'
and 40'x40' rooms, respectively. The LSM Series 15/75
candela wall mounted strobes were tested at UL for 75
candela on axis, and are listed at 15 candela under UL
1971 and meet 75 candela intensity on axis for ADA
guidelines with low current draw.
MT Series Signals have IN and OUT wiring terminations
that accept two #12418 American Wire Gage (AWG)
wires at each terminal. Inputs are polarized for compat-
ibility with standard reverse polarity type supervision.

Add 25% more input current than shown in Tables 1 and 2 when operating the unit at maximum input voltage. Rated input Voltage (either filtered
DC or unfiltered full-wave-rectified (FWR): Multitone Signals set for 24 VDC operation are UL rated to operate over a voltage range from 20 VDC to
31 VDC. Multitone Signals set for 12 VDC operation are UL rated to operate over a voltage range of 12 VOC to 15.6 VDC. Check the minimum and
maximum output for the power supply and standby battery and subtract the voltage drop from the circuit wiring resistance to determine the applied
voltage to the strobes.
Anechoic dBA is measured on axis in a non-reflective (free field) test room using fast meter response. For peak dBA (measured with peak meter
response), add 5 dBA to typical anechoic values shown in Table 1 and 2.
Reverberant dBA is a minimum UL rating based on sound power measurements in a reverberant test room.
Multitone Signals with and without strobes have a brief in-rush current during start-up.
A'WARNING: Multitone strobe models set on 'code-3 tone' with 'Standard dBA" do not meet the 75 dBA minimum UL reverberant
sound level required for public mode fire protection service (noted by in Table 2). Models with settings which produce less than 75
dBA may not be heard. This setting is acceptable only for general signaling (non-fire alarm) use. Use the 'high' dBA setting with this
tone or use a different tone for public mode service.

Use the highest value of rated average current to determine the maximum number of strobes and to establish power supplies and wire gauge
requirements. Use the rated peak current or rated inrush current (whichever is higher) to verify fuse requirements.
Make sure that the average, peak and inrush currents do not exceed system power supplies or fusing limits. If the strobe and audible operate on the
same circuit, add the strobe current from Table 3 to the proper audible current from Table 1 or 2. See 'Installation Instructions".
