HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-09-02; Arts Commission; MinutesARTS COMMISSION Minutes Sept. 2, 2021, 6 p.m. Virtual Meeting Council Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carl sbad, CA 92008 CALL TO ORDER: Chair Emma Jadhav called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Jadhav, Barker, Nassiri and Snyder. STAFF PRESENT: Richard Schultz, Cultural Arts Manager Daisy Hernandez, Senior Office Specialist Karen McGuire, Curator of Exhibitions Tonya Rodzach, Public Art Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Arts Commission meeting held August 5, 2021. Motion by Commissioner Barker, seconded by Commissioner Nassiri, to approve the Minutes of the regular meeting held on August 5, 2021. Motion carried, 4/0/2/0 (Miringoff and Chung-Absent). PUBLIC COMMENT: None. WILLIAM D. CANNON GALLERY UPDATE: Curator of Exhibitions Karen McGuire presented a PowerPoint that previewed the upcoming Frida Kah/o's Garden exhibit. The presentation also covered the un-crating of the exhibit, actor Vanessa Severn's guest artist residency and her one-woman show about the life of Frida Kah lo. PUBLIC ART UPDATE: Public Art Coordinator Tonya Rodzach introduced Executive Director of the Carlsbad Village Association Christine Davis who shared images of the second phase of Pop- Up Art: A New Experience and spoke about the long-lasting impact this program made on businesses and artists. Co-owner of Barrio Glassworks Mary Devlin also spoke about her firsthand experience as a participating business. Rodzach ended her update with a brief presentation updating the commissioners on the Fire Station 2, the Carlsbad Library Learning Center and New Village Arts Theater murals, and the Calavera Hills Community Park Beach Chair. CHAIR REPORT: Chair Jadhav spoke about how the goal for a long time has been for art to reach the masses and how she believes that Pop-Up Art, a diverse collection, in multiple languages, etc. is making that happen. She congratulated Cultural Arts staff for making a difference. CULTUAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT: Manager Schultz thanked Christine Davis for being a great partner and thanked Mary Devlin for taking the time to speak to the commission. He also gave an update on the newest Arts Commissioner, Nora George, who will be joining the Arts Sept. 2, 2021 Arts Commission Page 2 Commission in October. Finally, Virtually Artful will be returning in September. The first virtual concert will feature Astra Kelly, a rock and blues singer, streaming Sept. 10-18. The second concert will feature Mando Basso, a local folk duo, streaming Sept. 22-30. Schultz ended his report with a mention of October, as National Arts and Humanities month, which will be filled with a slate of events. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioners shared the highlights of their participation and attendance at local arts events and programs. Commissioner Barker and Commissioner Nassiri spoke about their efforts to recruit members for the Business Outreach Subcommittee.
