Whether installed on exposed piping or in an office ceil- ing, it is functional and attractive. Beautifully versatile is the description for the Reliable Models F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Series Recessed glass bulb sprinkler. Recessing the F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Series enhances its already low profile decorative appearance, and facilitates a rapid and perfect installa- tion. The recessed escutcheon of the Models F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 are highly adjustable. The two piece con- struction makes field installation a very easy and rapid task. This also allows ceiling panels to later be removed without shutting down the fire protection system, thus fa- cilitating maintenance of above ceiling services. Models Fl Series Standard Response Sprinklers Pendent/F1/F2 Horizontal Sidewall Pendent/FP Pendent F1 /F2 Pendent FP The F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Series Automatic Sprin- kler utilizes a 5.0 mm frangible glass bulb. The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially constructed to provide fast thermal response. At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid in both the liquid phase and in the vapor phase. The vapor phase can be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid expands forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liquid pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the waterway an allowing the deflector to distribute the discharging wat The F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Series Sprinkler tem- perature rating is identified by the color of the glass bulb capsule as well as frame color where applicable. Installation Model F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Series sprinklers are stan- dard response sprinklers intended for installation as specified in NFPA 13. They must also be installed with the Model W2 Sprinkler Wrench specifically designed by Reliable for use with these sprin- klers. The Model F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Recessed Sprinklers are to be installed with a maximum recess of 3/4 inch (19mm). The Model Fl, F2, and FP Escutcheon illustrated are the only recessed escutcheon to be used with the Model F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Recessed Sprinklers. The use of any other recessed escutcheon Will void all approvals and negate all warranties. When installing Model F156, F142, F1XLH & F128 Recessed Sprinklers use the Model GFR2 Sprinkler Wrench. Any other type of wrench may damage these sprinklers. Note: A leak tight ½" NPT (R1/2) sprinkler joint can be obtained with a torque of 8- 18 ft-lbs (11 -24 N-m). Do not tighten sprinklers over maximum recommended torque. It may cause leakage or impair- ment of the sprinklers. Glass bulb sprinklers have orange covers to protect the bulb dur- ing the installation process. REMOVE THIS PROTECTION ONLY AFTER THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN HYDROSTATICALLY TESTED AND, WHEN APPLICABLE, THE ESCUTCHEONS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. RASCO wrenches are designed to install sprinklers when covers are in place. The 11.2 K-factor, ELO-231B Sprinklers were subjected to full-scale, high-piled storage fire tests to qualify their use in lieu of 5.6 or 6.0 K-factor standard spray sprinklers for the protection of high-piled storage. Higher flow rates can be achieved at much lower pressures with the 11.2 K-factor, ELO-231 B Sprinklers, making their use highly advantageous in high density applications, such as the pro- tection of high-piled storage. Wax or lead coatings can be used to extend the life of the copper alloy components used in Series ELO-231B Sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be obtained when exposed to corrosive atmospheres. Although wax, lead, and polyester coated sprin- klers have passed the standard corro- sion tests of the applicable approval agencies, the testing is not repre- sentative of all possible corrosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is rec- ommended that the end-user be con- sulted with respect to the suitability of these corrosion resistant coatings IMPORTANT Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP2300 for warnings pertaining to regulatory and health information. Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Page 1 of 6 for any given corrosive environment. The effects of ambient temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/ chemical velocity, should be consid- ered, as a minimum, along with the cor- rosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. An upright intermediate level version of the Series ELO-231B Sprinklers for in-rack applications can be obtained by utilizing the Series ELO-231B Upright Sprinkler with the WSG-2 Guard & Shield, and a pendent intermediate level version of the Series ELO-231B Sprinklers can be obtained by utilizing the Series ELO-231B Pendent Sprinkler with the WS-2 Shield. If there is a pos- sibility of the pendent intermediate level version being exposed to mechanical damage, a G-2 Guard can be added. NOTICE The 11.2 K-factor, Series ELO-231B Upright and Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association (NFPA), in addition to the standards of any other authori- ties having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for main- taining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating con- dition. Contact the installing contrac- tor or product manufacturer with any questions. Installation of Series ELO-231B Pendent Sprinklers in recessed escutcheons will void all sprinkler warranties, as well as possibly void the sprinkler's Approvals and/or Listings. A leak-tight 3/4 in. NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a min- imum-to-maximum torque of 10 to 20 lb-ft (13,4 to 26,8 N.m). A leak-tight 1/2 in. NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a minimum-to- maximum torque of 7 to 14 lb-ft (9,5 to 19,0 N.m). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler inlet with con- sequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Notes: Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approxi- mately 1/16 in. (1,6 mm) for the 155°F (68°C) to 3/32 in. (2,4 mm) for the 286°F (1410C) temperature ratings. Do not attempt to make up for insuf- ficient adjustment in the escutcheon plate by under- or over-tightening the sprinkler. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. The Series ELO-231B Upright and Pendent Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions. Note: Pendent sprinklers are to be installed in the pendent position; upright sprinklers are to be installed in the upright position. Step 1. With pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand- tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 2. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 3 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2), except that an 8 in. or 10 in. adjustable wrench is to be used for wax-coated sprinklers. With reference to Figure 1, the W-Type 3 Sprinkler Wrench or the adjustable wrench, as applicable, is to be applied to the wrench flats. When installing wax-coated sprinklers with the adjustable wrench, additional care needs to be exercised to prevent damage to the wax coating on the sprinkler wrench flats or frame arms and, consequently, exposure of bare metal to the corrosive environment. The jaws of the wrench should be opened sufficiently wide to pass over the wrench flats without damaging the wax coating. Before wrench-tightening the sprinkler, the jaws of the wrench are to be adjusted to just contact the sprin- kler wrench flats. After wrench-tight- ening the sprinkler, loosen the wrench jaws before removing the wrench. After installation, the sprinkler wrench flats and frame arms must be inspected and the wax coating retouched (repaired) whenever the coating has been damaged and bare metal is exposed. The wax coating on the wrench flats can be retouched by gently applying a heated 1/8 in. diam- eter steel rod to the areas of wax that have been damaged, to smooth it back over areas where bare metal is exposed. Notes: Only retouching of the wax coating applied to the wrench flats and frame arms is permitted, and the retouching is to be performed only at the time of the initial sprinkler installation. The steel rod should be heated only to the point at which it can begin to melt the wax, and appropriate precau- tions need to be taken, when handling the heated rod, in order to prevent the installer from being burned. If attempts to retouch the wax coating with complete coverage are unsuc- cessful, additional wax can be ordered in the form of a wax stick (the end of which is color-coded). Only the correct color-coded wax is to be used, and retouching of wrench flats and frame arms is only permitted at the time of initial sprinkler installation. With the steel rod heated as previ- ously described, touch the rod to the area requiring additional wax with the rod angled downward, and then touch the wax stick to the rod approximately 1/2 in. away from the area requiring retouching. The wax will melt and run down onto the sprinkler. Care and Maintenance TYCO Series ELO-231B 11.2K Standard Response, Standard Coverage Upright and Pendent Sprinklers must be main- tained and serviced in accordance with this section. Before closing a fire protection system control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it con- trols, permission to shut down the affected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or other- wise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant sprinklers, after the installation has been completed, to verify the long term potential integrity of the sprinkler coatings. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice; however, instead of inspecting from the floor level, a random sampling of close-up visual inspections should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condition and the long term integrity of the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present. The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Associ- ation, such as NFPA 25, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Contact the install- ing contractor or product manufacturer with any questions. Care must be exercised to avoid damage to the sprinklers before, during, and after installation. Sprin 10 - klers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprin- kler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. Reducing the amount of air in a fire sprinkler system is essential to help protect the system piping from the effects of corrosion that is often found at the air/water interface in the fire sprinkler system piping. Removing as much air as possible will also have a positive effect on the performance of vane type waterfiow detectors. The operation of vane type waterfiow detectors can be delayed or prevented if too much air is trapped in the system piping. The intent of the product is to vent as much air from the fire sprinkler system as possible. The PAV provides automatic venting of air as the system is being filled. Furthermore, trapped air can also be vented as the air in the system migrates to the vent location over time. The air vent will automatically close when water reaches the vent. The PAV provides a 1/2" NPT-male connection which will allow installers to safely pipe to a drain, any inadvertent discharge of water that is inherent in the operation of the automatic air vent. INSTALLATION AND SERVICING (See Figures 1 -2) It is strongly recommended to install a ball valve in line with the PAY to assist in servicing the strainer without disabling the sprinkler system. The PAV shall be installed in accordance with local ordinances and the applicable NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, or NFPAI 3R standard. The Engineer of Record should select the Model PAY, Potter Air Vent installation location. Usually at a point in the system that will vent the most air. The location of the PAV must not interfere with the spray pattern of any sprinkler head. The connection point must be off the top of the pipe. (See Fig. 1) The piping must be level or pitch back toward the fire sprinkler system piping and arranged in such a manner that water will not become trapped. Immediately after installation and filling of the fire sprinkler system, the PAY should be inspected for leaks and proper operation. The unit should be inspected periodically. Thereafter the manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently. Inspection should include removal and cleaning of the strainer screen. Remove the screen and flush with clean water. Use a wire brush if necessary to remove any particles trapped in the screen. Pipe the output of the air vent to a drain or other suitable location in the event there is an inadvertent discharge of water from the vent. REPLACEMENT The vent used in the PAY is not field replaceable. If the vent should fail, the entire unit must be replaced.
