Presented herein is Pacific Soils Engineering, Inc.'s (PSE) response to a recent City of Carlsbad
plan check review comment for the La Costa Ridge project. The comment concerns the distance
between drainage swales and structures (see Plate 1, attached). r*4
Upon review of the comment and plan (Plate 1), it is our opinion that the distance between
drainage swales and structures, as designed, is in accordance with our recommendations
(References).
Drainage swales may be located less than five (5) feet in horizontal distance away from
structures as long as the structure footings are embddedbe1ow the elevations of the swale
bottoms (PSE, 2005 Table 7.2). The drainage swales in question have only a 1.0% gradient and
therefore the footing embedment depths will be significantly below the swale bottoms.
