HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-05-05; Arts Commission; Minutes Council Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA 92008 May 5, 2022, 6 p.m. CALL TO ORDER: 6 p.m. ROLL CALL: Prater-Barker, Chung, Ferone, George, Nassiri and Carrillo. Absent: Miringoff. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Arts Commission meeting held May 5, 2022. Motion by Commissioner Nassiri seconded by Commissioner George to approve the Minutes of the regular meeting held on February 3, 2022, as presented. Motion carried, 4/0/1/2 (Miringoff – Absent) (Prater-Barker, Carrillo – Abstain) PRESENTATIONS: Shandra Knight and Jon Lash from the Carlsbad Community Theater, a Community Arts Grants recipient, presented the Commission with a PowerPoint covering their services, funding sources and needs. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. INTRODUCTION OF NEW ARTS COMMISSIONERS: The current Arts Commissioners briefly introduced themselves. Commissioners Ferone and Carrillo then shared how their past experiences relate to the arts and their service in the Arts Commission. ELECTION OF NEW CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR: Library And cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson informed the commission that someone who is not present at the meeting can not be nominated. She also shared that the vote could be postponed to a later meeting. Motion by Commissioner George, seconded by Commissioner Chung, to postpone the vote until the regular June Arts Commission meeting. Motion carried, 6/0/1 (Miringoff – Absent) SOUTH CARLSBAD COASTLINE PROJECT: Nikki Matosian, manager of the city’s Communication & Engagement Team, gave the commission an update on the future use of Carlsbad’s southern coastline. She asked the commission to provide feedback on what the project should prioritize, and on ideas related to the arts. CULTURAL ARTS BUDGET REVIEW: Senior Management Analyst Fiona Everett gave the commission an overview of the preliminary budget submitted for Cultural Arts for Fiscal Year 2022-23. The city’s complete preliminary budget will be presented to City Council on May 24, 2022 for their approval. FIRE STATION 2 PUBLIC ART UPDATE WITH ARTISTS MARY CARTER TAUB: Public Art Coordinator Tonya Rodzach presented the commission with an overview of Fire Station 2 Public Art, a review of the design concept and the project’s next steps before asking the commission to confirm their support with a memo to City Council. Artist Mary Carter Taub, Fire Battalion Chief Eric Evonsion and Public Works Municipal Projects Manager Steven Stewart were also in attendance as part of the project team. Mary Carter Taub spoke to the commission about why she was drawn to this project and her process. Motion by Commissioner Nassiri seconded by Commissioner Ferone, to approve the final public art design concept for Fire Station 2 by Artist Mary Carter Taub and confirm support of the design concept ARTS COMMISSION Minutes
