completed and upcoming senior activities and programs, as well as other topics of interest.

GENERAL
Goal 2: Support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
Carlsbad Senior Center Age-Friendly Outreach during Hot Rods and Cool Treats Event
On Saturday, May 14, 2022, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Carlsbad Senior Center staff hosted an open house
during the Hot Rods and Cool Treats special event in Pine Avenue Community Park. The event was an
intergenerational experience with a classic car show, children’s games, live music, food, and ice cream.
The open house showcased class demonstrations for line dancing, watercolor, meditation and sumi-e
Japanese ink art, ending with a musical performance by the Seaside Singers. Guests were provided
tours of the center and introduced to the many services and opportunities offered by the Parks &
Recreation Department. Demonstrations were offered at both the Carlsbad Senior Center and adjacent
Pine Avenue Community Center.
Goals 1, 3 & 4 Highlights: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center, increase social inclusion, enhance
connectivity and minimize isolation.
•Carlsbad Cruisers Walking Club extended to Calavera Community Center and Park on Thursdays.
The Calavera Cruisers are planning to explore different Carlsbad trails using the GoHike app.
•Whale watching excursion was a great success and sold out. Customers continue to express
their interest in more excursions to explore Carlsbad and beyond as a cohesive senior group.
•UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning continues with weekly lectures and discussions. May featured
lectures on Mexican Seas/Mares Mexicano, The Meaning of Life: Ideals, Can Art Change the
World and America and China-Cooperation, Competition, Confrontation or Conflict.
•Culinary Lab at the Pine Avenue Community Center offered delicious international recipes
including with Cinco de Mayo, Polish, Haitian and Iranian dishes. The lab has become a social
hub for enjoying the creating and consumption of delicious food.
Goal 4: Social Inclusion
Free programs that offer inclusion and healthy social interaction:
•Billiards, Bingo, Canasta, Carlsbad Newcomers Monthly Meeting, Carlsbad Tech Users Group,
Ceramics, Chess Club, Community Garden Club, Duplicate Bridge, Hawaiian Dance, Line
Dancing, Morningstar Investment Education, Needlecraft, Painting Club, Photo & Tech Classes,
Ping Pong, Posture Alignment, Sewing & Quilting Club, Stamp Collectors, Writer’s Block, Writing
Our Lives Group
•Free Concert on Monday, May 9, 2022, featured Daniel Newheiser performing jazz, country
rock, and original music.
•Getting started with Genealogy on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, library staff introduced seniors to
one of the most popular hobbies in the United States. Topics included discovering your family’s
heritage by using one of the largest genealogy collections in Southern California located in the
City of Carlsbad at the Georgina Cole Library.

Health and Wellness Highlights
Hearing Screenings
•1-on-1 consultations offered by Sonus Hearing. Meetings included a complimentary cleaning
and/or adjustment for current hearing aid customers.
Dancing with Ricky Ricardo
•Top 10 World Champion in Salsa, Swing, and Hustle, Ricky Ricardo leads dance classes full of
fun, joy, community building, music and movement.
Restorative, Chair, Gentle and Yin Yoga
•Offered on Mondays and Thursday, this wide range of yoga options introduces focus on
breathing, meditation, better balance and flexibility.
Silver Paddles Pickleball Beginning & Intermediate with new League
•This very popular program added an additional beginning class, has a waitlist for the
intermediate class and added a league in May. Players expressed interest in a fall league.
“24K” Zumba Gold, Zumba Gold Seated and Zumba Toned
•Cha-cha, merengue, salsa, and swing inspire the Zumba movement which has now expanded to
a Seated and Toned version of Zumba.
Upcoming Events
Concert in the Courtyard, Monday, June 13, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
•Free concert featuring Salsa Steel performing the sounds of Steel Drums Island music. Guests
are encouraged to dress in their best tropical attire.
Museum of Making Music Tour, Friday, June 24, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
•The newly renovated Museum of Making Music will provide a guided tour to learn about music
from the evolutionary sounds of jazz, folk to rock ‘n roll and pop.
Senior Commission Center Tours
•Senior Commissioners will select neighboring senior centers to tour and report back at the next
senior commission on their findings.

•During the pandemic, transportation ended and customers who were previously bused to the
center for lunch were counted for transportation if they received a home delivered meal.
Transportation restarted and available Monday – Wednesday. Currently recruiting for a second
