Figure 1) are automatic sprin- klers of the frangible bulb type. They are "standard response - spray sprin- klers" that produce a hemispherical water distribution pattern below the de- flector. The 11.2 K-factor, ELO-2318 Sprin- klers were subjected to full scale, high- piled storage, fire tests to qualify their use in lieu of 5.6 or 8.0 K-factor stand- ard spray sprinklers for the protection of high-piled storage. Higher flow rates can be achieved at much lower pressures with the 11.2 K-factor, ELO-231B Sprinklers - making their use highly advantageous in high density applications, such as the protection of high-piled storage. Wax or lead coatings can be used to extend the life of the copper alloy com- ponents used in Series ELO-231B sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be obtained when exposed to corrosive atmospheres. Although wax, lead, and polyester coated sprin- klers have passed the standard corro- sion tests of the applicable approval agencies, the testing is not repre- IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP 700 for the INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Consequently, it is recom- mended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these corrosion resistant coatings for any given corrosive environment. The ef- fects of ambient temperature, concen- tration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the.corrosive na- ture of the chemical to which the sprin- klers will be exposed. An upright intermediate level version of the Series ELO-231 B Sprinklers for in-rack applications can be obtained by utilizing the Series ELO-231 B Up- right Sprinkler with the WSG-2 Guard & Shield, and a pendent intermediate level version of the Series ELO-231 B Sprinklers can be obtained by utiliz- ing the Series ELO-231 B Pendent Sprinkler with the WS-2 Shield. If there is a possibility of the pendent interme- diate level version being exposed to mechanical damage, a G-2 Guard can be added. WARNINGS The 11.2 K-factor, Series ELO-23 lB Upright and Pendent Sprinklers de- scribed herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. (FM guidelines may differ from UL and C-UL Listing criteria.) Operation The glass bulb contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and water to flow. Installation The Series ELO-231B Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the fol- lowing instructions: NOTES Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 155°F/68°C to 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 286°F/141°C temperature ratings. A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maxi- mum of 30 ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be used to install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT connections. A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob- tained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maximum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque may be used to install sprinklers with 1/2 NPT con- nections. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet and cause leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi- "FITTING SIDE" TOWARDS SPRINKLER FITTING / WRENCH RECESS (END "A") FIGURE 2 W- TYPE 3 SPRINKLER WRENCH dent adjustment in the escutcheon plate by under- or over-tightening the sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. The Series ELO-231B Upright and Pendent Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following in- structions. Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to be installed in the pendent position, and upright sprinklers are to be installed in the upright position. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 3 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2), except that an 8 or 10 inch adjustable Crescent wrench is to be used for wax coated sprinklers. With reference to Page 4 of 6 TFP342 Figure 1, the W-Type 3 Sprinkler Wrench or the adjustable Crescent wrench, as applicable is to be applied to the wrench flats. When installing wax coated sprinklers with the adjustable Crescent wrench, additional care needs to be exercised to prevent damage to the wax coating on the sprinkler wrench flats or frame arms and, consequently, exposure of bare metal to the corrosive environ- ment. The jaws of the wrench should be opened sufficiently wide to pass over the wrench flats without damag- ing the wax coating. Before wrench tightening the sprinkler, the jaws of the wrench are to be adjusted to just con- tact the sprinkler wrench flats. After wrench tightening the sprinkler, loosen the wrench jaws before removing the wrench. After installation, the sprinkler wrench flats and frame arms must be in- spected and the wax coating re- touched (repaired) whenever the coat- ing has been damaged and bare metal is exposed. The wax coating on the wrench flats can be retouched by gen- tly applying a heated 1/8 inch diameter steel rod to the areas of wax that have been damaged, to smooth it back over areas where bare metal is exposed. NOTES Only retouching of the wax coating ap- plied to the wrench flats and frame arms is permitted, and the retouching is to be performed only at the time of the initial sprinkler installation. The steel rod should be heated only to the point at which it can begin to melt the wax, and appropriate precautions need to be taken, when handling the heated rod, in order to prevent the installer from being burned. If attempts to retouch the wax coating with complete coverage are unsuc- cessful, additional wax can be ordered in the form of a wax stick (the end of which is color coded). Only the correct color coded wax is to be used, and retouching of wrench flats and frame arms is only permitted at the time of initial sprinkler installation. With the steel rod heated as previously de- scribed, touch the rod to the area re- quiring additional wax with the rod an- gled downward, and then touch the wax stick to the rod approximately one-half inch away from the area re- quiring retouching. The wax will melt and run down onto the sprinkler. Care and Maintenance Series ELO-231 B Sprinklers must be maintained and serviced in accord- ance with the following instructions: NOTES Before closing a fire protection system control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it con- trols, permission to shut down the af- fected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb (ref. Installation Section Note). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant sprinklers, after the installation has been completed, to verify the long term potential integrity of the sprinkler coatings. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice; however, instead of in- specting from the floor level, a random sampling of close-up visual inspec- tions should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condi- tion and the long term integrity of the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national code. Although corrosion resis- tant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these coatings for any given corro- sive environment. The effects of ambi- ent temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. An intermediate level versions of the Series TY-FRB Pendent Sprinklers are detailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP356, and Sprinkler Guards are de- tailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP780 WARNINGS The Series TY-FRB Sprinklers de- scribed herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may Impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. They are intended for use in automatic sprinkler systems designed in accordance with standard installation rules (e.g., NFPA 13) for a maximum coverage area of 400 ft2 (37,2 m2), as compared to the maximum coverage area of 225 ff2 (20,6 m2) for standard coverage sprin- klers used in light hazard occupancies. The recessed version of the EC-8, in- tended for use in areas with a finished ceiling, uses either the two-piece Style 30 or 40 Recessed Escutcheon. The Style 30 Recessed Escutcheon pro- vides up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent po- sition, whereas, the Style 40 provides 3/4 inch (19,1 mm) of vertical adjust- ment from the flush pendent position. The adjustment provided by the Re- cessed Escutcheons reduces the ac- curacy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be ob- tained when exposed to corrosive at- mospheres. Although corrosion resis- IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP 700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fall to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. tant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these corrosion resistant coatings for any given corrosive environment. The effects of ambient temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be con- sidered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. WARNINGS The Series EC-8 Extended Coverage Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compli- ance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may Impair the per- formance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com- pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor- rosion resistant coating. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.g., NFPA .25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. Values of mid-sizes can be interpolated. 01PS CAR IT dROOVED:0 IM Grooved IPS Fittings Victaulic fittings are designed specifically for use in grooved piping systems. Victaulic oilers a broad tine of fittings in sizes through 24' (600 mm) in a variety of straight and reducing styles. Most standard fittings are cast of durable ductile iron to precise tolerances. Victaulic standard fittings pressure ratings conform to the ratings of Victaulic Style 77 couplings. All fittings are supplied with grooves or shoulders to permit fast installation without field preparation. The grooved design permits flexibility for easy alignment. These fittings are not intended for use with Victaulic couplings for plain end pipe (refer to page 55 for fittings available for plain end applications). Fittings are provided in various materials including malleable iron, ductile lion, steel or segmentally welded steel depending on styles and size. Fittings ,are painted orange enamel with galvanized optionally available, contact Victaulic for details. Victaulic fittings are designed specifically for use in grooved piping systems. Fittings are provided grooved or with shoulders conforming to standard steel pipe outside diameters. When connecting wafer or lug-type butterfly valves directly to Victaulic fittings with 741 or 743 Vic-FlangeOl adapters, check disc clearance dimensions with ID, dimension of fitting. Request 07.01. Alternate Materials Stainless Steel - Grooved end fittings are available in Schedule 10 Type.316 stainless steel (Schedule 5, 40 and Type 304 optionally available) in various sizes. PW Eagle is one of the largest producers of PVC pipe in North America, and our products are available from distributors throughout the United States. PW Eagle produces PVC pipe for a variety of applications servicing the potable water, well casing, sewer, turf, agriculture, plumbing, communications and electrical markets. Our elven manufacturing facilities in Oregon, Washington, California, Utah, Nebraska, Texas, Missouri and West Virginia assure on-time delivery. PW Eagle C905 high pressure water pipe combines superior materials with the latest manufacturing technology. PW Eagle products meet or exceed industry standards because Of our rigorous quality-control program. PW Eagle supports the PVC pipe industry's efforts to maintain the highest design and manufacturing standards. We are members of the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association and American Water Works Association (AWWA). H Pil 1. 2. 3. Basic Assembly Instructions - 3 Corrosion Resistance C900 is immune to nearly all types of internal and external corrosion. Since PVC is a non-conductor, it is not affected by electrolysis. Nor is it sus- ceptible to alkaline or acid soil condi- tions. A correctly installed PW Eagle system will provide long-term service at reduced operating costs. Water Quality Extractant water purity tests performed by independent test laboratories ensure that our pipe meets the requirements for water purity as specified by ANSI/NSF Standard 61. Superior Flow Characteristics An extremely smooth inner surface gives C900 a Hazen-Williams flow coefficient of C=150. This means less burden on pumps and reduced pumping costs, because there's less friction between moving water and pipe walls. Exceptional Strength and Durability Every piece of C900 is hydrostatically proof tested at four times its pressure class. A 2.5-to-1 safety factor is applied to the long-term pressure capacity of the pipe. The resulting value is further reduced by a surge pressure value, which also incorporates a 2.5-to-1 safety factor. Burst test pressure capability of C900 Class 150 is at least 755 psi, with sustained pressure test capability of 500 psi. Throughout the country, in all conditions and climates, C900 has served admirably in municipal water mains, fire lines, and sewage force mains. joint Integrity PW Eagle's integral bell gasketed joint meets the same strength requirements of the C900 pipe, as well as the demanding test criteria of ASTM D 3139. The ability of PVC to bend without breaking allows the joint and pipe assembly to compensate for minor earth movement, which can cause problems in more rigid, non-PVC assemblies. Certification C900 is periodically tested to maintain listings from Factory Mutual System* (FM) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). C900 also conforms to applicabld requirements of the Uniform Plumbing Code's'. *Factory Mutual is not applicable to Class 100, DR 25 products. Longitudinal Bending Axial deflection at the pipe joints is not recommended, However, it is possible to curve C900 to allow for slight changes In direction. Bending to these minimum radii will not jeopardize C900's design capability. See PW Eagle's Technical Bulletin "Longitudinal Bending of PVC Pipe" for more details. Nominal Pipe Size (Inches) Minimum Bending Radius (feet) 4 100 6 145 8 190 10 235 12 275 --------------------- Thrust Restraint Adequate thrust restraint is necessary for all gasketed joint systems. The "push on" features of our joints provide many installation advantages, but without adequate thrust restraint they can become "push off" problems. The large thrust fortes present in water-distribution systems (see Table 1) require thrust restraints designed to handle test and peak operating pressures. Concrete Thrust Blocks If concrete thrust blocks are used, the size and type of thrust blocking must be based on the load-bearing capacity of the soil, pressure in the pipe, and diameter of the pipe. Table 2 provides conservative estimates of load-bearing values for various soil types. When soil conditions are not known, samples should be tested to determine soil properties. Mechanical Restraints If mechanical thrust restraint devices are used, they should be a type designed for use with PVC pipe. The devices should meet the test requirements of Uni-Bell's Specification Uni-B-1 3 "Joint Restraint Devices for Use with PVC Pipe." Design manuals and computer software are available from the restraint manufacturers. For typical thrust blocking and mechanical thrust restraint examples, see Figures 1 through 6. Under conditions requiring immediate back- filling of trenches, test after backfihlirig but prior to placement of permanent surface. Testing short lengths of pipe first will verify proper installation and joint assembly If concrete thrust blocks are required, allow sufficient curing before testing. Separate tests for pressure and leakage may be performed. If separate tests are done, the pressure t9st should be done first. See Table 4. Procedure While the line is under pressure, check for leaks in all exposed pipe, fittings, valves, and hydrants. Repair or replace all defective elements. Repeat the test until all visible leaks stop and the allowable leakage requirements are met, per Table 5. For detailed pressure-testing requirements, consult your engineer or the PW Eagle installation guide. WARNING: Do not use PVC pipe for pressurized air systems. Injury or death may result due to the cata- strophic nature of pipe failure should failure occur. Rapid expansion of compressed air could propel shards of plastic throughout the area. WARNING: Expel all air from the pipeline during filling and again be- fore testing for pressure or leaks. Automatic air-release valves are rec- ommended. Compressed entrapped air can greatly amplify surges or pumping pressures. Also, com- pressed air might leak through a joint that will not leak water.
