Introduction The following is a high-piled combustible storage code compliance report for Nordson Asymtek, located at 2765 Loker Avenue in the City of Carlsbad, California. This report is intended to help both the owners and the fire department in expediting plan review and effectively determine the requirements necessary to meet the Fire Code. This report is based on the 2013 Editions of the California Fire Code and the Building Code, and the 2013 Edition of NFPA-13, Standardfor the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. CFC Table 3206.2 footnote j, which would not required smoke and heat removal when protected by an ESFR sprinkler system, has been removed as amended by the City of Carlsbad. As of July 1, 2015, CFC 910.3 (Attachment 413) outlining the design and installation requirement for smoke and heat vents has been updated as follows: Listing and labeling. Smoke and heat vents are required to be listed and labeled to indicate their compliance with FM 4430, ICC-ED AC 331, or UL 793. Smoke and heat vent locations. Smoke and heat vents shall be located 30 feet or more from adjacent lot lines and fire walls and 10 feet or more from fire barriers. . Vents shall be uniformly located within the roof in the areas of the building where the vents are required to be installed by Section 910.2, with consideration given to roof pitch, sprinkler location and structural members. Smoke and heat vent area. The required aggregate area of smoke and heat vents shall be calculated as follows: A = V/9000. Maintenance. Smoke and heat vents shall be maintained in an operative condition. Smoke and heat vents shall be maintained in accordance with NFPA 204. Note: 6,483 sq ft is based on the high piled storage/racking area plus 15' beyond. Rev 1.1 - Nordson Asymtek I V. LAUSBRUCKN ER Page 12 2765 Loker Ave, Carlsbad, CA AND ASSOCIATES I 4.4.2 Design Area #2 & #3 S On behalf Nordson, we are requesting to waive the requirements for smoke and heat vents in Design Areas #2 and #3. This request is due to the following (Attachment #14): The Finished Goods & the Shipping/Crating area portion of the facility is classified conservatively as a Class IV commodity. The Finished Goods is mainly heavy metal equipment with small amounts of plastics. The area is approximately 70 ft from Area #1 The area is less than 2,636 sq ft o When calculating the number of smoke and heat vents for the area plus 15 ft beyond for the finished goods area and up to walls for the shipping/crating: V = Volume of the Storage Area = 34.5 ft x 5,313 ft2 = 183,299 ft3 A = Required Aggregate Vent Area = 183,299 ft3 / 9000 = 20 ft2 = 0.64 vents 4.5 Draft Curtains Per CFC Table 3206.2 (Attachment #15), draft curtains are not required in high-piled storage areas of High Hazard/Group A Plastic commodities where the building is provided with fire sprinklers. 4.6 Portable Fire Extinguishers S Per CFC 906 and 3206.10 (Attachment #16), portable fire extinguishers shall be installed in the following locations: In new and existing Group B, F-i and S occupancies Where required by the sections indicated in Table 906.1. Per CFC Table 906.3(1) & 906.3(2) (Attachment #15), the following is the proposed fire extinguisher type and layout: Storage Areas: 4-A:20-B:C @ Travel Distance < 50 Feet The owners agree to comply with the requirements for fire extinguishers. One extinguisher may provide coverage to a maximum of 4000 ft2. Fire extinguisher types and locations will be provided by the owners or fire extinguisher vendor and approved by the fire department. Portable fire extinguishers shall be located in conspicuous locations where they will be readily accessible and immediately available for use. These locations shall be along normal paths of travel, unless the fire code official determines that the hazard posed indicated the need for placement away from normal paths of travel. Portable fire extinguishers shall not be obstructed or obscured from view. In rooms or areas in which visual obstruction cannot be completely avoided, means shall be provided to indicate the location of extinguishers. Rev 1.1 - Nordson Asymtek I KuSRucKuER 2765 Loker Ave, Carlsbad, CA Page 13 AND ASSOCIATES I 4.7 Aisle Widths Per CFC 3206.9.1.1 (Attachment #17), aisles in sprinklered buildings shall be a minimum of 44 inches. Per CFC 3206.9.1 (Exception 1) cross aisles used only for employee access between aisles shall be a minimum of 24 inches in width. Dead ends greater than 50 feet in high-piled storage areas are not recommended (Attachment #17). Nordson Asymtek agrees to meet the above requirements and to maintain a minimum of 4'- 0" aisle widths within the rack storage area. Any aisles <3'-6" will be treated as a flue space and the racks treated as multiple-row racks. 4.8 Housekeeping & Maintenance Per CFC 3205 (Attachment #18), the following are general maintenance and safety requirements, of which Nordson Asymtek agrees to comply with: The structural integrity of racks shall be maintained. Smoking shall be prohibited. Approved "NO SMOKING" signs shall be conspicuously posted. When restocking is not being conducted, aisles shall be kept clear of storage, waste materials and debris. Fire department access doors, aisles and exit doors shall be unobstructed. During restocking operations using manual stocking methods, a minimum unobstructed aisle width of 24 inches of the required aisle width shall be maintained in 48 inch or smaller aisles, and a minimum unobstructed aisle width of one-half of the required aisle width shall be maintained in aisles greater than 48 inches. During mechanical stocking operations, a minimum unobstructed aisle width of 44 inches shall be maintained. 4.9 Flue Spaces Per CFC 3208.3 and Table 3208.3 (Attachment 419), flue spaces shall be maintained for rack storage. Where required by the fire code official, required flue spaces in rack storage shall be equipped with approved devices to protect the required flue space. Such devices shall not be moved or modified. 4.9.1 Sprinkler Design Area #1 & #2: CFC Table 3208.3, the following are required flue spaces for rack storage Single Row Racks: Transverse - 3-inches, vertically aligned Longitudinal - Not Required Double Row Racks: Transverse - 3-inches, vertically aligned Longitudinal - 6-inches 4.9.2 Sprinkler Design Area #3: .
