The Models V3403 and V3407 standard response sprinklers are also special sprinklers designed, tested and Listed for "Stor- age Protection" utilizing the density/area criteria per NFPA 13, 2002 edition (for example: Figure 12.3.3.1.5) Note 2, Figure 12.3.3.1.5(d) Note 5, Paragraphs 12.3.3.5.1.2, 12.3.2.5.1.2, etc.) In addition the FM Global Approval Guide and Loss Prevention Data Sheets must also be followed when install- ing these Model V34 sprin- klers. FM Global refers to all these models as "Control Mode" sprinklers for use in storage applications utiliz- ing the density/area design method. The discharge rates for Model V34 (ELO) sprin- klers are twice that of stan- dard ½" (15 mm) sprinklers and up to 60 percent higher than 1½" (20 mm) orifice sprinklers. The design incor- porates state-of-the-art, heat responsive, frangible glass bulb design (standard or quick response) for prompt, precise operation. The die cast frame Is more streamlined and attractive than traditional sand cast frames. It is cast with a hex- shaped wrench boss to allow easy tightening from many angles, reducing assembly effort. This sprinkler is avail- able In various temperature ratings (see chart on page 2) to meet many design requirements. Sprinkler Operation The operating mechanism is a frangible glass bulb which contains a heat responsive liquid. During a fire, the ambient temperature rises causing the liquid in the bulb to expand. When the ambi- ent temperature reaches the rated temperature of the sprinkler, the bulb shatters. As a result, the waterway is cleared of all sealing parts and water is discharged towards the deflector. The deflector is designed to dis- tribute the water in a pattern that is most effective in con- trolling the fire. Coverage For coverage area and sprin- kler placement, refer to NFPA 13 standards, the FM Global Approval Guide and Loss Prevention Data Sheets where applicable.
