Absent: Miringoff, Nassiri, Prater-Barker. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Arts Commission meeting held May 5, 2022. Council Cha mber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA 92008 Motion by Commissioner Ferone seconded by Commissioner George to approve the Minutes of the regular meeting held on May 5, 2022, as presented. Motion carried, 4/0/3 (Miringoff, Nassiri, Prater-Barker -Absent) PRESENTATIONS: None. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. SUMMER 2022 MOBILE OUTREACH UPDATE: Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz introduced new staff members, Thomas Johnston and Wendy Sabin Lasker. Mr. Johnston started working for the city supporting TGIF in 2019 and in the spring of 2022 was selected for the full time Programs & Venue Coordinator position. Mrs. Lasker is the new interim Community Arts Coordinator; she joined the city in April and has extensive arts experience, from both east and west coasts. Together, they presented the commission with an update on Summer 2022 mobile outreach programs, including the 35th Anniversary of TGIF Concerts in the Parks and a review of arts education summer activities. SUMMER 2022 PUBLIC ART UPDATE: The commission received a presentation from Public Art Coordinator Tonya Rodzach reviewing current and upcoming temporary and permanent Public Arts projects. SUMMER 2022 COMMUNITY ARTS GRANT UPDATE: Mr. Schultz reminded the commission that in February the Community Arts Grants guidelines were updated and approved. He also explained the delayed start of this annual grants cycle was due to significant staffing changes. Mrs. Lasker informed the commission of the updated and condensed timeline for this fiscal year. She also reviewed the two new categories: Emerging Artists and Emerging Arts Organizations, and new grant amount limits. AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS & ECONOMIC PROSPERITY STUDY (AEP6) INTRODUCTION: Mr. Schultz introduced the AEP6 study1 a national effort launched this spring by the Americans for the Arts to document and detail the economic power that arts and culture produces, with August 10, 2022 Arts Commission participating communities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is the sixth economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry in the U.S. 2022 ARTS COMMISSION WORK PLAN FOLLOW-UP: Mr. Schultz explained that this was a preview of an ongoing discussion to activate the 2022 Arts Commission workplan. Page 2 2022 ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR: The election of Chair and Vice Chair was continued until the next meeting due to three Arts Commissioners being absent. Motion by Commissioner George seconded by Commissioner Ferone to continue the election of Chair and Vice Chair to the next regular Arts Commission meeting on Sept. 1, 2022. Motion carried, 4/0/3 ( Miringoff, Nassiri, Prater-Barker -Absent) CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT: Mr. Schultz invited the commissioners to visit the current exhibit in the William D. Cannon Art Gallery before it closes Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022. The next exhibit will be Artist Showcase The Chair, which opens Sept. 10, 2022. There will be an opening reception from 5 -8 p.m. ARTS COMMISSION CHAIR REPORT: Acting Chair Chung had no report. ARTS COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: Commissioners shared the highlights of their participation at local arts events.
