The plans submitted for the project referenced above have been reviewed. The following
information is needed to show compliance with the 2016 California Building and Fire
Codes (CBC and CFC), and other codes as adopted and amended by state regulation
and the City of Carlsbad. It will be necessary to reevaluate the project after the receipt of
additional information as specified below.
INSTRUCTIONS
Resubmit three sets of the revised plans along with one set of the original plans.
Provide a written response for each correction on this correction list. You may write
directly on this list, or you may provide a separate "Response List" which addresses
each correction item by item.
Incorporate all corrections into the blue/black line drawings; cloud or call out all
corrections.

CORRECTIONS
ON THE PLANS THE FOLLOWING SHALL BE PROVIDED:
As specified in the correction letter dated 4/12/19; provide detail view of the fire-line
pipe under the building. 2016 NFPA 24, Sec 10.4.3.1.1
The response refers to the fire sprinkler contractor. The underground shows going
under the building. It is assumed the POC for the sprinkler contractor is 6" AFF. If
not on the underground show the POC of the sprinkler contractor and provide
approved plans for their underground portion of the plans. POC is 6" AFF provide
the detailed view of the underground under the building.
Provide cross-sectional detail of the backfill. Note: The backfill shall consist of 6"
below and 12" above pipe and shall be clean fill sand. 2016 NFPA 24, §10.9.1
As specified in the correction letter dated 4/12/19; FDC shall be immediately
adjacent to the fire department access road. 2016 NFPA 24, Sec 5.9.5.1

The FDC is not located immediately adjacent to the Fire Department Access road.
Relocate the FDC to immediately adjacent to the Fire Department Access road.
The FDC is required to be located within 100 feet of a fire hydrant. The FDC's
exceed that distance. Relocate so the maximum distance does not exceed 100 feet.
CFC §912.2
Hydrants shall be a minimum of 40 feet from the building to be protected; relocate
hydrant/s as appropriate. Note: fire hydrants can be located closer than 40 feet to
the building protected provided that the separation of the fire hydrants are reduced
by 50%. Either relocate the fire hydrants so that they are more than 40 feet from the
structure or provide additional fire hydrants. 2016 NFPA 24, Sec 7.2.3
Note: Caution relocating the fire hydrants shall not be such that the fire hydrants are
on the opposite side of the street from the building creating an obstruction across a
fire department access lane in a fire situation.
As specified in the correction letter dated 4/12/19; Each fire-line serving the building
shall be provided with an indicating valve (Ply); provide the required valve. 2016
NFPA 24, Sec 6.2.1
The response indicates that is provided. The Marking building is not provided with
either a PIV nor a FDC. Provide the Marketing building with both a FDC and a Ply.
As specified in the correction letter dated 4/12/19; Large private fire service main
systems shall have sectional post indicating valve (PIV) at appropriate locations
when the system serves more than 5 appurtenances. The maximum number of
appurtenances between sectional valves shall not exceed 5. 2016 NFPA 24, Sec
6.6.1.3
The response indicates that it was provided; none could be located please clarify.
The use of private hydrants to supply the FDC require an aboveground check valve
on the lateral line feeding the fire sprinkler system to prevent a circular flow back to
the fire hydrant. Provide an aboveground check valve on the lateral line feeding the
fire sprinkler system.

CORRECTIONS
ON THE PLANS THE FOLLOWING SHALL BE PROVIDED:
The plan shall specify 2016 edition of NFPA 24 as the design Standard.
Specify that where the underground pipe is located in driveways the bury depth shall
be a minimum of 36". 2016 NFPA 24, §10.4.2.2.3
Provide detail view of the fire-line pipe under the building. 2016 NFPA 24, Sec
10.4.3.1.1
Provide cross-sectional detail of the backfill. Note: The backfill shall consist of 6"

The fire department connection (FDC) is not show on the plan. The FDC shall
contain a minimum of two 2 1/2" inlets. When the fire sprinkler density design requires

500 gpm (including the interior hose stream demand) or greater, or a standpipe
system is included, four 2 1/2" inlets shall be provided. The FDC shall be a listed
assembly, i.e Potter-Roemer FDC Models 5761-5764, 5775, 5776, 5780, 5781,
5785, 5786, Guardian FDC Models 6224, 6226, 6242, 6244. Note: No specific
manufacture is recommended, these makes and models are provided only as
reference, as to a "listed assembly." Show the location of the FDC. Specify the
number of inlets, make and model. On the plans identify the sprinkler design density
including the inside hose stream requirements, or provide a 4-way FDC 2016 NFPA
24, Sec 5.9
Note: The FDC shall be immediately adjacent to the fire department access road.
