Shepro Residence, 7133 Obelisco Circle, Carlsbad, CA
Field verify that the motor houing for the ceiling fan in the guest bedroom does not create a
blockage to discharge from the adjacent sprinkler.
Field verify that the beams in "Bob's Office" do not create a blockage to discharge from the
sprinklers in this room.
There was a minor error in the hydraulic calculations. Pipe segment 21 should contain six
900
elbows, rather than the two indicated. However, the increased pipe length will not increase the
demand pressure to greater than 90% of the available supply, and no revision or resubmittal is
required.
The following comments are for your information and will appear on every residential sprinkler review.
The alarm bell must be capable of being heard, above background noise, with doors closed, in all living areas of the
residence. This will be checked at final acceptance.
Pressure required at base of riser will be verified to be available at time of final acceptance.
Sprinkler heads are omitted from bathroom areas under 55 SF in area with noncombustible plumbing fixtur

s
.
Fixtures will be verified at final acceptance.
Sprinkler head blockage or pattern disruption caused by beams or other obstructions will be verified to not exist at
final acceptance inspection.
Sprinkler heads should be located the proper distance from heat sources (stoves, kitchen ranges, fireplace

diffusers, etc.) This will be checked at final acceptance inspection.
Sprinkler heads located in an unconditioned space (garage, water heater closet, etc.) should be fast respon

All exposed piping shall be black steel or copper. Concealed piping can be CPVC plastic.

Product Description
Model RFC43 Concealed Residential Sprinklers are fast
response residential fusible solder link automatic sprinklers.
Residential sprinklers differ from standard sprinklers primarily
in their response time and water distribution patterns.
Model RFC43 sprinklers discharge water in a
hemispherical pattern below the sprinkler deflector.
Residential distribution patterns are higher and generally
contain a finer droplet size than standard sprinkler patterns.
The combination of speed of operation and high discharge
pattern required for residential sprinklers has demonstrated,
in fire testing, an ability for controlling residential fires, and
thereby providing significant evacuation time for occupants.
The RFC43 Sprinkler provides the best form of fire
protection by combining an attractive appearance and 1/2
(13mm) of cover adjustment for ease of installation. The
small diameter cover plate is easily and positively attached
and blends into the ceiling, concealing the most dependable
fire protection available, an automatic sprinkler system.
The RFC43 is a UL Listed Residential Sprinkler to be
installed in the residential portions of any occupancy in
accordance with NFPA 13. 13R, & 13D.
The RFC43 can reduce the need for precise cutting of drop
nipples. The threaded cover plate assembly can be adjusted
without tools to fit accurately against the ceiling. The fire
protection system need not be shut down to adjust or remove
the cover plate assembly.
Application and Installation
The RFC43, for residential installations, uses a 165°F (74°C)
fusible solder link in a tuning fork style sprinkler frame with a
drop-down deflector. This assembly is recessed into the
ceiling and concealed by a flat cover plate. The cover plate is
attached to the skirt, using 135°F (57°C) ordinary temperature
classification solder. Men the ceiling temperature rises, the
solder holding the cover plate releases the cover allowing the
deflector to drop into position and exposing the sprinkler

inside to ceiling temperatixe The subsequent -operation of
the solder link opens the waterway andc uses the deflector
to drop into position to distribute the discharging water in a
hemispherical pattern below The sprinkler deflector. Any
adjustment of thread engagement between the cover plate
and cup will assure that the drop-dawn deflector is properly
located below the ceiling. The residential distribution pattern
contains a finer droplet size than a standard sprinkler, and the
pattern produces significantly higher wall wetting.
After a 2 518 inch diameter hole is cut in the ceiling, the
sprinkler is to be installed with the Model Ft Wrench. When
installing a sprinkler, the wrench is first positioned into the
sprinkler/cup assembly and around the hexagonal body of
the sprinkler frame. The Wrench must bottom out against the
cup in order to ensure proper, sate installation. The sprinkler
Is then tightened into the r' fitting. 1Mien inserting or
remcMng the wrench from the spririder/cup assembly, care
shouk1 be taken to prventdarnage to the sprinkler. DO NOT

ASSEMBLY. MODEL RFC43 CONCEALED SPRINKLERS
MUST BE INSTALLED ONLY WITH 135°F RATED COVERS.
Cover assemblies provide up to )' (13nn) of adjustment
Turn the cover clockwise until the flange is in contact with the
ceiling. The optional push-on cover plate may require a final
adjusting turn to contact the ceiling. Cover removal requires
turning in the counter-clockwise direction.
In ceilings that have a plenum space above the sprinkler,
the plenum space may have neutral or negative
pressurization but must not be positively pressurized. Inspect
all sprinklers after installation to ensure that the gap between
the cover plate and ceiling and the 4 slots in the cup are all
open and free from any air flow impediment

Product Description
Reliable Models Fl FR and Fl FR Recessed Sprinklers are
quick response sprinklers which combine the durability of a
standard sprinkler with the attractive low profile of a decora-
tive sprinkler.
The Models F1 FR and F1 FR Recessed automatic sprin-
klers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers
have demonstrated response times in laboratory tests which
are five to ten times faster than standard response sprin-
klers. This quick response enables the Model El FR and
Fl FR Recessed sprinklers to apply water to a fire much
faster than standard sprinklers of the same temperature rat-
ing.
The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled
amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a pre-
cisely manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is spe-
cially constructed to provide fast thermal response. The
balance of parts are made of brass, copper and beryllium
nickel.
At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid
in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can
be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid ex-
pands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liquid
pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid to
push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter,
opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib-
ute the discharging water.
The temperature rating of the sprinkler is identified by the
color of the glass bulb.

Product Description
The Fl Glass Bulb Sprinkler combines the durability
of a standard sprinkler with the attractive low profile of
a decorative sprinkler. Whether installed on exposed
piping or in an office ceiling, it is functional and
attractive. The Horizontal and Vertical Sidewall
Sprinklers provide an equally attractive appearance
when ceiling piping cannot be used.
Beautifully versatile is the description for the Reliable
Model Fl Recessed Designer glass bulb sprinkler.
Recessing The Designer® enhances its already low
profile decorative appearance, and facilitates a rapid
and perfect installation.
Model Fl Recessed Designer's escutcheon is highly
adjustable. The two piece construction makes field
installation a very easy and rapid task. This also allows
ceiling panels to later be removed without shutting
down the fire protection system, thus facilitating
maintenance of above ceiling services.
The Designer® Automatic Sprinkler utilizes a frangible
glass bulb. The glass bulb consists of an accurately
controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed
inside of a precisely manufactured glass capsule. This
glass bulb is specially constructed to provide fast
thermal response.

At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the
fluid in both the liquid phase and in the vapor phase.
The vapor phase can be seen as a small bubble. As
heat is applied, the liquid expands forcing the bubble
smaller and smaller as the liquid pressure increases.
Continued heating forces the liquid to push out against
the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the
waterway and allowing the deflector to distribute the
discharging water.
The Fl Sprinkler temperature rating is identified by
the color of the glass bulb capsule as well as frame
color where applicable.

Model Fl & Fl Recessed Sprinklers
Application
Model Fl and Fl Recessed sprinklers are used in
fixed fire protection systems: Wet, Dry, Deluge or
Preaction. Care must exercised that the orifice size,
temperature rating, deflector style and sprinkler type
are in accordance with the latest published standards
of the National Fire Protection Association or the
approving Authority Having Jurisdiction.
Installation
Model Fl sprinklers are standard response sprinklers
intended for installation as specified in NFPA 13. They
must also be installed with the Model D Sprinkler
Wrench specifically designed by Reliable for use with
these sprinklers.
The Model Fl Recessed Sprinklers are to be installed
with a maximum recess of 3% inch (19mm). The Model
Fl Escutcheon illustrated is the only recessed
escutcheon to be used with the Model Fl Pendent and
EC Sprinklers. The use of any other recessed
escutcheon will void all approvals and negate all
warranties. When installing Model Fl Recessed
Pendent and EC Pendent Sprinklers, use the Model
GFR1 Sprinkler Wrench. Any other type of wrench may
damage these sprinklers.
Glass bulb sprinklers have orange covers to protect
the bulb during the installation process. REMOVE THIS
PROTECTION ONLY AFTER THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN
HYDROSTATICALLY TESTED AND, WHEN APPLICABLE,
THE ESCUTCHEONS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. RASCO
wrenches are designed to install sprinklers when
covers are in place.
Maintenance
The Models Fl and Fl Recessed Sprinklers should
be inspected quarterly and the sprinkler system
maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not clean
sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other
cleaning fluid. Remove any sprinkler which has been
painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any
way. A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained
to allow quick replacement of damaged or operated
sprinklers. Prior to installation, sprinklers should be
maintained in the original cartons and packaging until
used to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers
that would cause improper operation or non-operation.

The low flow Fl Res sprinklers are specially
engineered for fast thermal response to meet the
sensitive fire protection application needs of the latest
residential market standards (UL 1626 Standard). Upon
fire conditions, rising heat causes a sprinkler's
heat-sensitive glass-bulb to shatter, releasing the
waterway for water flow onto the deflector, evenly
distributing the discharged water to control a fire.

Maintenance
Model Fl Res 30, 49, Fl Res 58, Fl Res 76, Fl Res 44
and Fl Res 40 Sprinklers should be inspected quarterly,
and the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with
NFPA 25, 13, 130, and 13R. Do not clean sprinkler with
soap and water, Ammonia or any other cleaning fluids.
Remove dust by using a soft brush or gentle vacuuming.
Remove any sprinkler which has been painted (other than
factory applied) or damaged in any way. A stock of spare
sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick
replacement of damaged or operated sprinklers. Prior to
installation, sprinklers should remain in the original cartons
and packaging until used. This will minimize the potential
for damage to sprinklers that could cause improper
operation or non-operation.
