PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Chair Rangus led the Pledge of Allegiance. ANNOUNCEMENTS: None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Regular Meeting held June 2, 2022 Motion by Vice Chair Mehan, second by Chair Rangus, to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried 3/0/0/2 (Ross and Sander - Abstain). CONSENT CALENDAR: None. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS: 1. DEPARTMENT REPORT: Receipt of a report on recently completed and upcoming Senior Center activities and programs, as well as other topics of interest. Recommendation: Receive report. Recreation Area Manager Margaret Hamer provided an overview of recent staff and Senior Com- missioner visits to San Marcos, Vista, Encinitas, and Oceanside Senior Centers. She noted that the group traveled together in the attractive and comfortable City of Carlsbad Senior Center trans- portation shuttles, and that their visits were informative, and helped to generate an understanding of comparable senior facilities and programs. Recreation Area Manager Hamer announced that July is National Parks and Recreation Month and that this year’s recognition in Carlsbad included a “Parks & Recreation Month” proclamation at City Council on July 12, 2022, and a department “takeover” of the city’s Instagram account. Recreation Area Manager Hamer reported that senior activities have expanded to both Stagecoach Community Park and Alga Norte Community Park, for example, a class on Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall SENIOR COMMISSION Minutes Sept. 1, 2022 Senior Commission Regular Meeting Page 2 Prevention is now being offered. She added that senior excursions remain popular, including recent visits to the Carlsbad Aqua Farm in July and the San Diego Botanic Garden in August. She further added that the next senior excursion will be to the Scripps Birch Aquarium on Sept. 30, 2022. Recreation Specialist Andi Koller detailed the department’s intergenerational programs. She pro- vided information about the successful collaboration between high school and college students, and how that partnership benefitted seniors. She explained that participating students gain valuable work experience, obtain community service hours, and become involved in their community. Recre- ation Specialist Koller explained how staff was recruiting teen participants, and the various programs offered. The Commission received the report. COMMITTEE/CITY COUNCIL REPORTS: Vice-Chair Mehan reported on items that the Growth Management Citizens Committee has been work- ing on during July and August: • July – SANDAG presentation, report on current fire standard compliance, report on current pop- ulation statistics and trends, and report on current traffic trends. • August – Report on population projections, and report on library performance standards. ANNOUNCEMENTS: None.
