SCOPE 2. J. Required: In this section shall.be all labor, materi~ls~- transpo~tation,_ services and facilities necessary or in- cidental to the completion of' landscaping work shown on the drawings and hereinafter specified ,including. but not limited to, the following: (Bl IC l ( D l Preparation of existing soil, incorporating all addi- tives, fertilizers and treatments specified. ' Fine grading. Supplying and planting all trees, shrubs, ground cover, plant materials and pots. Maintenance of all plants and planting after completion and approval for period specified herein. VERIFICATION OF DIMENSIONS AND QUANTITIES All scaled dimensions are approximate. Before proceeding with any work, the Contractor shall carefully check and verify all dimensions and quantities and shall immediately inform the Landscape Architect of any discrepancy between the drawings or specifications and actual conditions. ~o work shall be done in any area where there is any such discrepancy until approval for same has been given by ~he Architect or his representative. MATERIALS IA) Quantities and types of plant materials furnished and spacing shall be of the species, kinds, and sizes as described on the drawings. {B) Plant materials indicated on the dcawings and herein specified shall conform to the following: ( 1) Nomenclature: Plant names indicated on the drawings conform to "Standardized Plant Name 11 established by the American Joint Committee on Horticultural Nomen- clature. Except for names not covered therein, the established custom of the nursery is followed. (2) Condition: Plants shall b~ symmetrical, typical for variety and species sound, healthy, vigorous, free from plant diseases, insect pests or their eggs, and shall have healthy, normal root systems, well filling their containers, but no to the point of being root bound. Plants shall not be pruned prior to delivery except as authorized by the Landscape Architect or his representative. In no case shall trees be topped before delivery. (3) Dimensions: The height and spread of all plant material shall be measured with branches in their normal position and shall be as indicated on the drawings. It shall be understood that these plant materials shall be normal stock for the type listed. ( 4) Inspection: All plant materials shall. be subject to the inspec- tion and approval of the Landscape Architect or his representative before planting. IS) Substitutions: Substitutions for the indicated plant materials will be permitted, provided the substitute materials are approved in advance of planting date by the Landscape Architect, and the substitutions are made at no additional cost to the Owner. For all substitute materials of less value than those indicated or specified, the contract pricu will be adjusted in accordance with the provisions of the contract. (C) Fertilizers and Soil Conditions: Herein specified shall conform to the following: (1) Nitrogen-Stabilized Shavings: Shall contain .5% Nitrogen based on dry weight. (2) Agricultural Gypsum: Shall be approved standard brand agricultu~al Calcium Sulphate as commonly applied to soils and shall contain 19\ combined sulfur. ' 4. ID I ( E I ( 3 ) Iron Sulphate: Shall be approved agricultural Iron Sulphate gran- ular in composition and containing 20\ metallic equivalent iron and 17% combined sulfur. (4) Ammonium Sulphate: Commercial fertilizer containing 211 Nitrogen. Tree Stakes: Shall be 10' long lodge pole stakes with pointed end and of sound construction( unless otherwise noted on detail). Tree Ties: Shall be equal in all respects to plastic "cinch-tie", or "Wonder Tree-tie". GRADING AND SOIL PREPARATION (Al Moisture Content: The soil shall not be worked when the moisture content is so great that excessive compaction will occur; nor when it is so dry that a dust will form in the air or that clods will not break readily. Water shall be applied, if necessary, to provide ideal moisture content tor tilling and for planting herein specified. (B) Preliminary Grading: Shall be done in such a manner as to anticipate the finish grading. Excess soil shall be removed or redis- tributed before application of fertilizer and mulch. Where soil is to be replaced by plants and mulch, allow- ance shall be no deficiency in the specified depth of mulched planting beds. Contractor shall receive site at 6'1 belo"" finish grade plus or minus 0.10 foot. IC) Weeding: Before and during preliminary and finish grading, all weeds and grasses shall be dug out by the roots and disposed of off the site. Perennial weeds and grasses to be removed include, but are not limited to, the following: Bermuda Grass Nut Grass Puncture Vine Johnson Grass St. Augustine (D) Weed Abatement Program: Alfalfa Dallis Grass Wire Weed Mustard Plant Grass (Allow time in construction schedule). Upon the completion of the irrigation system and after all existing weeds and growth have been removed from the planting area, apply 200 pounds of a commercial ferti- lizer 16.7.12 per acre, as per manufacturer's instruc- tions. Water all areas four (4) times daily for fourtuen (14) consecutive days and until weed seeds have gerrninated. Cease watering for three (3) days. Spray a non- selective herbicide such as "Round-up•', to eradicate the germinated weeds. Translocation period should be 7-10 days. Allow herbicide to kill all weeds. Rake or hoe off all dead weeds to a depth of 1/4 inch below the surface of the soil. If perennial weeds or grasses still exist, rewater four (4) times daily for fourteen ( 14} consecutive days, until the new growth appears. Reapply a non-selective herbicide. Remove weeds after herbicide has had sufficient time to kill. (E) Soil Preparation: All planted areas shall be thoroughly tilled to a depth of six (6) inches and shall receive the following amend- ments per one thousand (1,000) square feet: Three {31 cubic yards Nitrogen-Stabilized Shavings Fifteen ( 15) pounds of soil Sulfur One Hundred (100) po~nds of Gypsum Twenty-five (25) pounds of slow release 16-7-12 (+ironl-(part of weed abatement p.rogram) All amendments shall be thoroughly tilled into the top six (6) inches of soil and the area watered down. (Fl Finish Grading: When preliminary grading, including weeding and ferti- lizing, has been completed and the soil has dried suf- ficiently to be readily worked, all lawn and planting areas shall be finish graded. Finish grade shall be smooth, even, and uniform plane with no abrupt change of 5. surface. Soil areas adjacent to buildings shall slope away from the buildings to allow a natural run-off of water. Low spots and pockets shall be graded to drain properly. Finish grade of all planting areas shall be one (1) inch below grade or adjacent pavement of any kind. METHOD OF PLANTING IA) Time of Planting: No planting shall be done until all operations in con- junction with the installation of the sprinkler system have been co~pleted, final grades h~ve been established, the planting areas have been properly graded and pre- pared as herein specified, and the work approved by the Landscape Architect or his representative. (Bl Locations of Plants: Relative position of all trees and plants is subject to approval of the Landscape Architect or his representa- tive, and they shall, if necessary, be relocated as directed as part of the Contract. (Cl Placing of Plants: All plants shall be set so that, when settled, they bear the same relation to the required grade as they bore to the natural grade before being transplanted. Each plant shall be planted in the center of the pit and backfilled with "Prepared Backfill'1 unless otherwise specified (See Paragraph I). No soil in muddy condition shall be used for backfilling. No filling will be permitted around trunks or stems. All broken or frayed roots shall be cleanly cut off. (DJ Observation of Planting: The Architect or his representative shall observe the placing and planting of plant materials. (El Cutting Cans: (if applicable) All canned stock shall be opened by cutting tha can vertically on two opposite sides of the can with and approved instrument for the purpose. An ax or spade ~ill not be permitted. (F} Planting of Trees: All pits for trees shall be dug with bottoms twelve (12) inches below the ball. Pits shall be backfilled with the tree root ball set to the required grade, and the balance of the pit filled with "Prepared Backfill", thoroughly settled by tamping and watering. (See Para-graph II).) {G) Planting of Shrubs and Vines: Shrubs and vines shall be planted in pits at least two (2) times greater in diameter than their ball of earth and at least twelve (12) inches below the bottom of the ball. When the plant has been properly set, the pit shall be tilled to required grade with "Prepared Back- fill", thoroughly settled by tamping and watering. All vines shall be removed from stakes, untied, and securely fastened in an approved manner to wall, fence or other surface next to which they are planted. (H) Planting of· Ground Covers: All ground cover plants shall be evenly spaced to pro- duce a uniform effect and staggered in rows at the in- tervals indicated on the dravings. Plants shall be mulched as hereinafter specified and watered i1nmediately after planting operations are completed. The soil shall be kept continuously moist. Wat~ring shall be done 1n conjunction with the planting, but not later t~an the same day the plants are planted. 11 Prepared Soil'' back-fill is not required. (I) Prepared Backfill: All soil backfil] in pits for trees, shrubs, vines and for plan~er boxes shall be prepared soil consisting of 40% Redwood Shavings and 60% Excavated Soil, measured by volume, to which one (1) ounce of Iron Sulfate is added to each cubic foot of ,the mixture. The prepared soil shall be mixed in accurate proportion using a suitable measuring container such as a wheelbarrow of measured capacity. Unusedl excavated soil shall be -cleaned up and disposed of off-s,ite. Backfill shall be placed at the bottom of each hole and thoroughly compacted to a height that when a plant is placed in the hole, its root crown is slightly above the established final grade. Any plants which settles deeper than specified above shall be raised back to the correct level. After the planting has been placed, additional backfill shall be added to the hole to cover approximately one-half the height ot the root ball. At tnis stage, water shall be added to the top of the partly filled hole to thoroughly saturate the root ball and adjacent soil. Secure tree to stake with two {2) approved ties per tree stake. Tree and stake must be vertical. Split or broken stakes shall not be installed. Trees larger than twenty-four inch (24") box shall be guyed with three (3) guy wires of durable zinc coated iron No. 9 gage covered by Class 200 P.V.C. pipe. Guying stakes shall be Redwood (2 11X2"2'X6") spaced equally around the tree. The tree shall be protected by rubber or plastic hose, 1 /2" to 3/4" in diameter, to cover wire. INSPECTION (Al Inspection will be required for the following parts of the work: (1) Initial orientation site check and conference at beginning of landscape work which ~ill include Owner, Architect, and Landscape Contractor. (2) All plant material 24" box size a~d larger for approval. 13) When planting and all other indicated or specified work, except the maintenance period, has been completed. (4) Final inspection at the completion of the ~ainte- nance period. (S) See irrigation specifications. (B} The Contractor or his authorized representative shall be on the site at the time of each inspection. MAINTENANCE PERIOD (A) The Contractor shall continuously maintain all areas in- cluded in the Contract during the progress of the work, the maintenance period, and until final acceptance of the f.lork. (B) After all work indicated on the dra~ings or herein specified including all planting, has been completed, inspected, and approved by the Landscape Architect or his representative, the Contractor shall maintain all planted areas by means of continuous watering, weeding, cultivating, spraying, mulching, trimming, and/or any other operations necessary for their care and upkeep, for a period of not less than thirty (30) calendar days, except that the maintenance period shall be extended to include the time necessary to meet the re- quirements for completion of the maintenance period hereinafter specified. IC) All planted areas shall be kept free of debris, and shall be cultivated and weeded at not more than ten (10) day intervals. (D) All planted areas shall receive fertilizer application of five (S) pounds per 1000 square feet of Ammonium Sul- fate twenty-eight 1281 days following the beginning of maintenance and shall be -thoroughly watered in. (E} Special care shall be taken to prevent water spray on window, building walls, and automobiles. All paved areas shall be kept continuously clear of mud, debris and puddles. ( F) Hoses, maintenance equipment-and materials shall be neatly stored when not in use in an are·a authorized by the Owner. (G) .The Maintenance Foreman on the job shall be a competent English-speaking supervisor, experienced in landscape maintenance and capable of discussing matters with the Owner's representative on the site. ( H) Workman shall pre·sent a neat appearance at all times and shall conduct all work operations and dealings with the public in a diplomatic and courteous rnan·ner. 'Workmen shall be fully clothed at all times in dress suitable for the job. (I) At the completion of the maintenance period, all areas ·included in the Contract shall be clean and free of debris and weeds, all plant materials shall be live, healthy and free of infestations. (J) Replacements: Contractor shall immediately replace any and all plant material vhich, for any reason, dies or is damaged while under his care. Replacement shall be made with plants as indicated or specified for the original planting. GUARANTEE (A) All shrubs shall be guaranteed by the Contractor as to growth and health for a period of ninety (90) days after completion of the specified maintenance period and final acceptance. All trees shall be guaranteed by the Con- tractor to live and grow in an acceptable upright posi- tion for a period of one (1) year after completion of the specified maintenance period and final acceptance. IBI The Contractor, within fifteen (15) days of written no- tification by the Landscape Architect, shall remove and replace all guaranteed plant materials, which for any reason fail to meet the requirements of the guarantee.
