SITE PLAN REQUIREMENT FOR POLE, MONUMENT, AND FREESTANDING SIGN
APPLICATIONS
The following example illustrates the information that is required for all pole, monument, and
freestanding sign permit applications. Prior to approval, all such proposed signs must be reviewed
for potential issues by the Transportation Department, which will not allow signs to be approved
over the counter. Additional time will be required for on-site inspection.
21.41.080 Sign design standards
Relationship to Streets: Signs shall be designed and located so as not to interfere with the
unobstructed clear view of the public right-of-way and nearby traffic regulatory signs of any
pedestrian, bicyclist or motor vehicle driver.
Sight Distance: No sign or sign structure shall be placed or constructed so that it impairs the sight
distance requirements at any public or private street intersection or driveway.

I am the planner assigned to review your sign permit for 1200 Plum Tree Rd. Please see my comments below:
1. Per Condition 21 of SDP99-14, Resolution 4712, all lighting shall be designed to reflect downward and avoid any impacts on
adjacent property. Please demonstrate on the plans how the lighting will be reflected downward to avoid impacts on
adjacent properties.
2. Per section 21.41.080 of the Carlsbad municipal code, illuminated wall signs are prohibited on any building that faces and is
located within three hundred feet of any property line that adjoins residentially zoned property. Please show on the plans
that either the sign does not face a residential area or that the sign is located at least 300 feet away from the residentially
zoned property.

The City Planner has completed a review of the above-listed application for a Sign Permit.
After careful consideration of the request, the City Planner has determined that the application
meets the provisions of Title 21.41 of the Carlsbad Municipal Code (sign ordinance) and/or other
applicable city regulatory documents. Therefore, the City Planner approves the above-listed
application.
This decision may be appealed by you or any other member of the public to the Planning
Commission within 15 days of the date of this letter. Appeals must be submitted in writing to
the Planning Division at 1635 Faraday Avenue in Carlsbad, along with a payment of an Appeal
fee*. The filing of such appeal within such time limit shall stay the effective date of the order of
the City Planner until such time as a final decision on the appeal is reached.
Approval does not authorize construction. Building Permits are generally required in
conjunction with Sign Permits. Please contact the building department by visiting 1635 Faraday
Ave, Carlsbad 92008 or emailing building@carlsbadca.gov and obtain a building permit prior to
construction.
