McConnells Fine Ice Cream
sign permit
Jeanine Wilson 7/26/23
Hi Jeanine,
In reviewing the sign permit for “1935 Calle Barcelona – McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams”, there are a few things that are
not in conformance with the Sign Criteria Program for “The Forum at Carlsbad”, see the following comments;
1. Please revise the proposed layout of the logo into only two lines of stacked copy, as the current arrangement is
stacking the typeface “SINCE 1949” as a third line of copy atop the other two (Line #1 along the bottom: “FINE
ICE CREAMS”, Line #2 atop Line#1: “McConnell’s”). This is to conform with the sign program for this property,
quoted below [found on Page 9 of the sign program, last paragraph at the bottom, under the heading: TYPE
STYLES AND LOGOS]. I’ve included the full sign program as an attachment to this email.
a. “The typeface may be arranged in one or two lines of copy…”
2. Please revise the proposed pegging clearance of all sign letters from the current 1” and ½” to a 2” minimum off
the wall, to conform with the sign program for this property, quoted below [found on Page 9, last paragraph
under the heading: LIGHTING].
a. “All sign letters to be pegged a minimum 2” from wall.”
3. Please revise plans to demonstrate that the total sign area is within the “total sign area allowance”, which is
equal to one (1) square foot of sign area per lineal foot of primary storefront. Also revise plans to demonstrate
that the overall width of the sign does not exceed 75% of the lease/store frontage. This is to conform with the
sign program [found on Page 5 of the sign program, bullet points #2 and #4], as the current plans do not show
the store frontage as a square footage or the % of store frontage.
a. “Allowed sign area is equal to one (1) square foot of sign area per lineal foot of primary storefront.”
b. “The overall width of any sign shall not exceed 75% of any uninterrupted architectural treatment, or
lease frontage, whichever is less.”
4. Please have the Landlord for this property Approve, Sign, and Date the P-11 Application form as well as the Site
Plans.
