This memorandum provides City Council with information related to the recent appointment of
Assistant Chief Christie Calderwood to the position of President of the California Peace Officers'
Association (CPOA).
Background
The CPOA was established in 1921 and is committed to developing progressive leadership for
the California law enforcement community through organizational networking, professional
development, technology advancement and public policy advocacy. The CPOA has more than
26,000 members of all ranks from municipal, county, state, and federal law enforcement
agencies from throughout the state of California.
Discussion
On October 2, 2023, at the annual CPOA conference, Carlsbad Police Assistant Chief Christie
Calderwood was sworn in as the President of the CPOA for the 23/24 operational year. The
appointment to CPOA President is an impressive professional achievement for Assistant Chief
Calderwood as well as a proud moment for the Carlsbad Police Department. Assistant Chief
Calderwood will provide important leadership statewide over the next year, which will also
position the Carlsbad Police Department in critical conversations regarding the future of
professional policing.
Next Steps
Assistant Chief Calderwood will continue to serve in her role at the Police Department while
also serving as CPOA President for the next year.
