This provides sprinkler operation approximately six times laster than ordinary sprinklers. While the Quick Response Sprinkler provides an aesthetically pleasing appearance, it can be installed wherever standard spray sprinklers are specified when allowed by the ap- plicable standards. It offers the additional feature of greatly in- creased safety to life and is available in various styles, orifices, temperature ratings and finishes to meet many varying design requirements. Quick Response Sprinklers should be used ad- visedly and under the direction of approving authorities having jurisdiction. The heart of Globe's Series GL-QR sprinkler proven ac- tuating assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that contains a precisely measured amount of fluid. When heat is absorbed, the liquid within the bulb expands increasing the inter- nal pressure. At the prescribed temperature the internal pressure Within the ampule exceeds the strength of the glass causing the glass to shatter. This results in water discharge which is distril>- uted In an approved pattern depending upon the deflector style used. Figure 1) are automatic sprin-klers of the frangible bulb type. They are standard response spray sprinklers which produce a hemispherical water distribution pattern below the deflector. The 16.8 K-factor, K17-231 Sprinklers were subjected to full scale, high-piled storage. fire tests to qualify their use in lieu of 8.0 or 11.2 K-factor standard spray sprinklers for the protection of high-piled storage. t-figher flow rates can be achieved at much lower pressures with the 16.8 K-factor. K17-231 Sprinklers -making their use highly advantageous in high density applications, such as the pro-tection of high-piled storage. Applications for the 16-8 K-factor, Model K17-231 Pendent and Upright Sprinklers are expanding beyond the current listings/approvals. General Instructions A leak tight 3/4 in. NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a min- imum-to-maximum torque of 10 to 20 lb-f1 (13.4 to 26.B N•m). Higher levels of torque may distort the spdnkter inlet wrth consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held hori2ontal, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 in. (1,6 mm). Step 1. With pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the Model K17-231 Sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting_ Step 2. Using the W-Type 8 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2) applied to the sprinkler Wrench Rats (Ref. figure 1), tighten the Model K17-231 Sprinkler into the sprink'er fitting. Care and Maintenance The TYGO Ultra K17 Sprinkler,; must be maintained and serviced In accordance with this section. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that rt controls. permission to shut down the affected fire pmtecUon systems must be obtained from Iha proper authorities and all personnel who may be al1ected by thiS action must be notified. Sprinkkm; that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted. plated, coated. or other- wise altered after leaving the factory. Modif"'d sprinklers must be replaced.
