Re: Office of Traffic Safety A ar for Safer Streets Program (Districts -All )
This memorandum provides information about a special traffic safety award presented last week
to the City of Carlsbad.
Background
The California Office of Traffic Safety, California Highway Patrol, Caltrans and the National
Highway Transportation Safety Administration held a traffic saf_ety summit on
November 7 and November 8, 2023, in Orange County. The event drew several hundred law
enforcement, transportation planners and government officials from throughout the state to
share information about traffic safety.
Carlsbad's success highlighted
City staff were invited to serve on an e-bike safety panel with two other speakers:
• A California Highway Patrol representative who developed e-bike educational materials
as part of Agenda Bill (AB) 1946, authored by Assemblymember Tasha Boerner
• The leader of the California Association of Bicycling Organizations
Staff shared the city's Safer Streets Together effort, with a particular focus on how the
community engagement campaign t o change behaviors dovetailed with the enforcement and
engineering components to deliver a comprehensive approach to t raffic safety.
Special award
In addit ion to providing a speaker for the event, t he City of Carlsbad was singled out for a special
commendation from the Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety and the Regional
Administrator from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The Traffic
Safety Excellence Award, which is given only under the direction of agency leadership, recognizes
t he city's "exceptional performance, outstanding contribution and dedicated service in the field
of traffic safety."

City staff were proud to accept the award on behalf of the City of Carlsbad and pleased to see
the City Council's significant commitment to traffic safety recognized on a statewide level.
