They are intended for use in automatic sprinkler systems designed in accord- ance with standard installation rules (e.g., NFPA 13) for a maximum cover- age area of 400 f12 (37,2 m2), as com- pared to the maximum coverage area of 130 ft2 (12,1 m2) for standard cover- age sprinklers used in ordinary haz- ard occupancies or 225 ft2 (20,6 m2) for standard coverage sprinklers used in light hazard occupancies. The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Sprin- klers feature a UL and C-UL Listing that permits their use with unob- structed or non-combustible ob- structed ceiling construction as de- fined and permitted by NFPA 13, as well as a specific application listing for use under concrete tees. The Series C-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers have been fire tested to compare their per- formance to that of standard coverage spray sprinklers. These tests have shown that the protection provided is equal to or more effective than stand- ard coverage spray sprinklers. IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fall to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Page 1 of 8 Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be ob- tained when exposed to corrosive at- mospheres. Although corrosion resis- tant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these corrosion resistant coatings for any given corrosive environment. The effects of ambient temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be con- sidered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. WARNINGS The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers described herein must be installed and main- tained in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association, in addition to the standards of any otherauthorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may Impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, which then allows the sprinkler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The Tycoe Series EC-1 I and EC-14 Extended Coverage Sprinklers must only be installed in accordance with the applicable UL and C-UL Listing or FM Approval requirements as indi- cated below. Only the Style 30 or 40 Recessed Escutcheon is to be used for recessed installation, as applicable (Ref. Table A, B, and C).. UL and C-UL Listing Requirements 1. The Series EC-li and EC-14 Sprin- klers may be used for the coverage areas shown in Table D, based on maintaining the minimum specified flow rate as a function of coverage area and hazard group for all of the sprinklers in the design area. The Series EC-il and EC-14 Sprin- klers are permitted to be used with unobstructed or non-combustible obstructed ceiling construction as defined and permitted by NFPA 13. For example: Unobstructed, combustible or non- combustible, ceiling construction with a deflector to ceiling/roof deck distance of 1 t 12 inches (25 to 300 mm). Obstructed, non-combustible, ceil- ing construction with a deflector lo- cation below structural members of Ito 6 inches (25 to 150 mm) and a maximum deflector to ceiling/roof deck distance of 22 inches (550 mm). The Series EC-Il and EC-14 Sprin- klers having been specifically tested and listed for non-combustible ob- structed construction are permitted to be used within trusses or bar joists having non-combustible web mem- bers greater than 1 inch (25.4 mm) when applying the 4 times obstruc- tion criteria rule defined under "Ob- structions to Sprinkler Discharge Pattern Development". The minimum allowable spacing be- tween the Series EC-1 I and EC-14 Sprinklers, to prevent cold solder- ing, is 8 feet (2,4 m) for upright sprin- klers and 9 feet (2,7 m) for pendent sprinklers. The Series EC-1 I and EC-14 Sprin- klers are to be installed in accord- ance with all other requirements of NFPA 13 for extended coverage up- right and pendent sprinklers. For ex- ample: obstructions to sprinkler dis- charge, obstructions to sprinkler pattern development, obstructions to prevent sprinkler discharge from reaching hazard, clearance to stor- age, etc. UL and C-UL Specific Application Listing Requirements For Installation Under Concrete Tees The Series EC-Il and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Upright and Pendent Sprinklers (TY5137, TY5237, TY6137 & TY6237) have a UL and C-UL Spe- cific Application Listing for use under concrete tees when installed as fol- lows: The stems of the concrete tee con- struction must spaced at less than 7.5 feet (2,3 m) on center but more than 3 feet (0,9 m) on center. The depth of the concrete tees must not exceed 30 inches (762 mm). The maximum permitted concrete tee length is 32 feet (9,8 m); however, where the concrete tee length ex- ceeds 32 feet (9,8 m), non-combus- tible baffles, equal in height to the depth of the tees, can be installed so that the space between the tees does not exceed 32 feet (9,8 m) in length. The sprinkler deflectors are to be located in a horizontal plane at or above 1 inch (25,4 mm) below the bottom of the concrete tee stems. When the sprinkler deflectors are located higher than a horizontal plane 1 inch (251,4 mm) beneath the bottom of the concrete tee stems, the obstruction to sprinkler dis- charge criteria requirements of NFPA 13 for extended coverage up- right sprinklers applies. FM Approval Requirements The Series EC-Il and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers are to be installed in accordance with the appli- cable Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet for limited use in buildings of specific roof construction and for the protection of certain specific ordinary hazard (nonstorage and/or non-flam- mable or combustible liquid) occupan- cies. These criteria may differ from UL and/or NFPA criteria, therefore the de- signer should review and become fa- miliar with Factory Mutual require- ments before proceeding with design. Installation The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Sprin- klers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions: NOTES Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135'F/57'C to 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 286'F/14 1'C temperature ratings. A 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a minimum to maxi- mum torque of 10 to 20 ft.Ibs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with conse- quent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. The sprinkler must be installed with the deflector parallel to the mount- ing surface. Pendent sprinklers must be installed in the pendent position, and upright sprinklers must be in- stalled in the upright position. Step 2. After installing the Style 30,40, or 60 mounting plate (or other escutch- eon, as applicable) over the sprinkler pipe threads and with pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Wrench tighten upright or pen- dent sprinklers using only the W-Type 3 (End A) Sprinkler Wrench. When in- stalling the pendent sprinkler with Style 30, 40, or 60 Escutcheon, wrench tighten the sprinkler using only the W-Type 22 Sprinkler Wrench. The wrench recess of the applicable sprin- kler wrench (Ref. Figure 5 and 6) is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench fiats (Ref. Figure 1). - 2-7/8' DIA. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com- pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor- rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice; however, instead of in- specting from the floor level, a random sampling of close-up visual inspec- tions should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condi- tion and the long term integrity of the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. It is the best choice for archi- tecturally sensitive areas such as hotel lobbies, office buildings, churches, and restaurants. Each unit includes a Cover Plate As- sembly that conceals the sprinkler op- erating components above the ceiling. The separable two-piece design of the Cover Plate and Support Cup Assem- blies allows installation of the sprin- klers and pressure testing of the fire protection system prior to installation of a suspended ceiling or application of the finish coating to a fixed ceiling. They also permit removal of sus- pended ceiling panels for access to building service equipment without having to first shut down the fire pro- tection system and remove sprinklers. Also, the separable two-piece design of the the Sprinkler provides for 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of vertical adjustment, to reduce the accuracy to which the length of fixed pipe drops to the sprin- klers must be cut. The Series RFII Sprinklers are shipped with a Disposable Protective IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP 700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate ma fire situation or cause if to operate prematurely. Page 1 of 4 Cap. The Protective Cap is temporarily removed for installation, and then it can be replaced to help protect the sprinkler while the ceiling is being in- stalled or finished. The tip of the Pro- tective Cap can also be used to mark the center of the ceiling hole into plas- ter board, ceiling tiles, etc. by gently pushing the ceiling product against the Protective Cap. When the ceiling in- stallation is complete the Protective Cap is removed and the Cover Plate Assembly installed. As an option, the Series RFII Standard Response (5 mm bulb) "Royal Flush II" Concealed Pendent Sprinklers may be fitted with a silicone Air and Dust Seal (Ref. Fig. 5). The Air and Dust Seal is intended for sensitive areas where it is desirable to stop air and dust travel through the cover plate from the area above the ceiling. WARNINGS The Series RFl! Concealed Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compli- ance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may Impair the per- formance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. At this point the Deflector sup- ported by the Guide Pins drops down to its operational position. The glass Bulb contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb, activating the sprinkler and allowing water to flow. Design Criteria The RFll (TY3551 & TY3504), 5 mm Bulb Type, Concealed Pendent Sprin- klers are UL and C-UL Listed as stand- ard response - standard spray sprin- klers for use in accordance with the current NFPA standard. They are FM Approved as standard response - standard spray sprinklers for use in accordance with the current FM Loss Prevention Data Sheets. The RFll (TY3531 & TY3505) 3 mm Bulb Type, Concealed Pendent Sprin- klers are UL and C-UL Listed as quick response - standard spray sprinklers for use in accordance with the current NFPA standard. They are FM Ap- proved as standard response - stand- ard spray sprinklers for use in accord- ance with the current FM Loss Prevention Data Sheets. The Series RFll Concealed Pendent Sprinklers are only listed and ap- proved with the Series RFll Concealed Cover Plates having a metallic or white painted finish. The Series RFll must not be used in applications where the air pressure above the ceiling is greater than that below. Down drafts through the Sup- port Cup could delay sprinkler opera- tion in a tire situation. Installation The Series RFIl must be installed in accordance with the following instruc- tions: NOTES Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 155°F/68°C and 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 200°F/93°C tem- perature ratings. A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi- mum of 21 ft.lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque is to be used to install sprinklers. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leak- age or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in the Sprinkler Assembly by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler/Support Cup Assembly. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. The sprinkler must only be installed in the pendent position and with the centerline of the sprinkler per- pendicular to the mounting surface. Step 2. Remove the Protective Cap. Step 3. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 4. Wrench tighten the sprinkler using only the RFll Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 3). The AFII Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the Sprin- kler as shown in Figure 3. Step 5. Replace the Protective Cap (Ref. Figure 4) by pushing it upwards until it bottoms out against the Support Cup. The Protective Cap helps prevent damage to the Deflector and Arms dur- ing ceiling installation and/or during application of the finish coating of the ceiling. It may also be used to locate the center of the clearance hole by gently pushing the ceiling material up against the center point of the Protec- tive Cap. NOTE As long as the Protective Cap remains in place, the system is considered to be "Out of Service". * Registered Trademark of DuPont TFPI8I Page 3 of 4 1 H -L ----- - V 3/16' to 11/16" MANUFACTURER DEFLECTOR COVER PLATE (4,8 to 17,5 mm) PRESET GAP IN DROPPED RETAINER REFERENCE 3/32'(2,4 mm) POSITION ASSEMBLY COVER PLATE COVER PLATE - PROFILE DEPTH DIAMETER DIMENSION B DIMENSION A FACE OF CLEARANCE HOLE SPRINKLER DIAMETER FITTING DIMENSION C SPRINKLER SUPPORT CUP ASSEMBLY 1I" - 1/2" (12,7 mm) THREADED D ADJUSTMENT FACE OF CEILING, I RETAINING RING 1.2; MOUNTING SURFACE 77'1 3-1/4" (82,6 mm) C: 2-3/8 to 2-5/8" (60,3 to 66,7 mm) 3/16(4,8mm) D: 1-3/4" to 2-1/4 (445 to 57,2 mm) FIGURE 2 SERIES RFII CONCEALED SPRINKLER INSTALLATION DIMENSIONS . If the Sprinkler has been damaged and the Deflector does not move up and down freely, replace the entire Sprin- kler assembly. Do not attempt to mod- ify or repair a damaged sprinkler. Step 7. When installing an Air and Dust Seal, refer to Figure 5, otherwise proceed to Step 8.To attach the Air and Dust Seal, verify the angle of the out- side edge of the seal is oriented ac- cording to Figure 5. Start the edge of the Retainer in the grooved slot of the Air and Dust Seal and continue around the retainer until the entire Air and Dust Seal is engaged. NOTE The Air and Dust Seal is only to be installed on the periphery of the Re- tainer. Step 8. Screw on the Cover Plate/Re- tainer Assembly until the Retainer - Figure 2 (or Air and Dust Seal - Figure 5) contacts with the ceiling. Do not continue to screw on the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly such that it lifts a ceiling panel out of its normal position. If the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged with the Support Cup or the Cover Plate/Re- tainer Assembly cannot be engaged sufficiently to contact the ceiling, the Sprinkler Fitting must be repositioned. Care and Maintenance The Series RFII must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following instructions: NOTES Absence of the Cover Plate Assembly may delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Page 4 of 4 TFPI8I When properly installed, there is a nominal 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) air gap between the lip of the Cover Plate and the ceiling, as shown in Figure 2. This air gap is necessary for proper opera- tion of the sprinkler. If the ceiling is to be repainted after the installation of the Sprinkler, care must be exercised to ensure that the new paint does NOT seal off any of the air gap. Factory painted Cover Plates MUST NOT be repainted. They should be re- placed, if necessary, by factory painted units. Do not pull the Cover Plate relative to the Enclosure. Separation may result. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Also, replace any sprinklerthat has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). If a sprinkler must be removed, do not reinstall it or a replacement without reinstalling the Cover Plate Assembly. If a Cover Plate Assembly becomes dislodged during service, replace it im- mediately. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. This sprin- kler is available in various temperature ratings (see chart on page 2) and fin- ishes to meet many design requirements. The recessed pendent should be utilized with a Model V27 recessed escutcheon which pro- vides up to 3/4' (19 mm) of adjustments. Sprinkler Operation The operating mechanism is a frangible glass bulb which contains a heat responsive liquid. During a fire, the ambient tempera- ture rises causing the liquid in the bulb to expand. When the ambient temper- ature reaches the rated temperature of the sprin- kler, the bulb shatters. As a result, the waterway is cleared of all sealing parts and water is discharged towards the deflector. The deflector is designed to dis- tribute the water in a pat- tern that is most effective in controlling the fire. Coverage For coverage area and sprinkler placement, refer to NFPA 13 standards. The additional strength is provided by the ductile properties making up the fitting. This is accomplished by adding magnesium while the iron is being poured into its final cast shape. Caution: Installers who have not used ductile iron threaded fittings before should lie instructed that the fitting is stronger than the pipe and over-tightening the fitting can create leaks and cause-damage to pipe threads. In general, there is about one-half a turn difference between cast iron and ductile iron fittings. Apply Teflon tape or high quality pipe joint compound on the pipe threads and tighten two to three turns beyond hand tight. If you are using an automatic make- on machine, please exercise caution in setting your machine to the proper parameters prior to tightening fittings onto the male pipe threads Technical Data Model: 811, 812, 813, 814, 815, 816, 817, 818, 820, 825, 825B, 827, 830, 719 Style: Elbows, Tees, Unions, Caps, Extension Pieces, Bushings, Couplings and Plugs Wrench: Standard Pipe Wrench Thread: N.P.T. Material: Ductile Iron Maximum Working Pressure: 300 psi Weight: See Chart Approvals Approvals: U.L., U.L.C., F.M. (See Central Grooved submittal sheet for exact Listing/Approval information.) Installation Apply Teflon tape or high quality pipe joint compound on the pipe threads and tighten two to three turns beyond hand tight. 0 - - This provides an advantage as the fittings are not as susceptible to leaks or cracking and they are also lighter than standard cast iron.
