Each Keystone retaining wall unit has different strength, weight, and size considerations which requires an individual analysis. Geogrid soil reinforcement has performance properties which are unique to the polymer lype and material designation also requiring individual analysis. Different Keystone retaining wall unit and geogrid combinations have unique design properties that require special analysis. The purpose of Standardized Manual is to provide working parameters for the design and construction of small Keystone retaining walls in accordance with current standard of practice. Larger or more complex walls typically require site specific engineering analysis. Pennitting may be required for any retaining wall of any height so please check local requirements before proceeding with construction. This Standardized Manual provides pre-engineered design for construction of segmental block retaining walls (SRW) up to 6 feet high using 6-inch (150mm) high Country Manor or Verazzo wall units. The designs provided are for walls no greater than 6' in total height with specific backfill and surcharge conditions. The design is consistent with the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) "Design Manual for Segmental Retaining Walls, Third Edition." The wall has either level backfill or sloping backfill with no greater than a 26.6-degree slope or traffic load of 250 pounds per square foot. The soils at tbe site classify as sand, silty sand, clayey sand. silty gravel, clayey gravel, or mixtures tbereof, and has the internal angle of friction of 30° or greater. Such soils are soil types considered to be California Building Code (CBC) Class 4 type soils. BUILDING PERMIT The user shall consult the local building authority for pennit requirements for construction of retaining walls for specific conditions at the site. The user shall use experienced construction contractor or should have experience in construction of these walls and knowledge of soil compaction. The authority may require a report from a licensed soils engineer for soil type and its strength parameters, and for confirming applicability of this manual. DESIGN SUMMARY Tbe design presented in this manual meets minimum acceptable factors of safety of 1.5 ag!Unst sUding failures, and 2.0 against overturning and bearing capacity failure,. An Earthquake acceleration coefficient of 0.15g is used in the design. Wall batter considered is approximately 0-degree batter (almost vertical wall) and approximately 8 degree batter. Geogrid reinforcements are Miragrid 2XT manufactured by Tencate. The tables and plates that follow provide typical wall details and reinforcement schedule for Geosynthelic-Reinforced SRWs up to 6' in height. The grading around I.he wall shall allow positive drainage of surface waler away from and around Lhe wall. Hyrdrostatic pressures are not considered in the design. STEPS FOR DESIGN SELECTION 1. Determine if Keystone Standard Manual is applicable to your project: Th.is manual can be used when acceptable to local building officials and when the wall height, surcharge load, and soil type are consistent with those indicated in this mam1al. Z. Determine total wall heighl including proposed emhedment: The total wall height is defined as the exposed height plus embedment depth. The minimum wall embedment required is 6" for !eve] grade at tbe base of the wall. 3. Determine the type of soils that will be retained: Estimate the soil type based on visual soil classification or soil testing. For more details on soil type at your site, contact a Soils Engineer. 4. Determine loading condition on the wall: All cases apply for a near-level soil surface al the toe of the wall . a. Case A depicts a near-level wall backfill with no surcharge load near the wall cres1. b. Case B depicts a near-level wall crest with surcharge load applied by traffic, for example, aJong a driveway or a parking lot at the lop of the wall. c. Case C depicts a 2H: 1 V sloping surcharge (26.6 degrees maximum) above the wall. S. Select applicable wall design from the tables or charts: Select gcogrid reinforcement schedule from Design Tables 1-3, or Plates 2 and 3. 6. Determine if building permits are required for wall construction: Building permit requirements for segmental retaining walls are unique to each jurisdiction and can only be detennined through di reel contact with local building officials. If permits are required, submit this StaTidard E11gincering Manual along with other site drawings, survey plans, literature, etc. that may be required by the building department. 7. Wall Construction: Stait wall construction only after you confirm that you do not need a permil, or afler a permit is obtained. Construct wall per details shown on Plate 1. Consult a Keystone representative or hire a licensed engineer to understand the construction details and methods. Note: Documentation of soil types by a licensed engineer or testing lab may be required to use Standardized Manual when obtaining permits. USCS soil classification types are defined by ASTM D2487 & ASThi D2488. DESIGNED EXCLUSIVELY FOR USE WITH KEYSTONE COUNTRY MANORIVERAZZO/S'/'ONEGATE UNITS MANUFACTURED BY RCP BLOCK & BRICK AND MIRAGRJD 2XT MANUFACTURED BY TENCATE 2 KEYSTONE COUNTRY MANOR, VERAZZO & STONEGATE STANDARDIZED MANUAL EXCLUSIONS Do not use this manual, if any of the following applies: 1) The user has no knowledge of strength parameters of soils, 2) Total wall height is in excess of 6 feet, 3) Back slope is steeper than 2 horizontal to l vertical (26.6 degrees), 4) Special surcharge loading conditions exist, such as, buildings or other structures, or, 5) Groundwater or drainage problems exist at the site. LIMITATIONS The design presented herein is based on the use of the specified product manufactured under license from RCP Blocks & Bricks and for specific soil conditions. lt is the responsibility of the user of this design guideline to verify the actual site soil conditions, and to consltuct the wall in accordance with standard construction procedures and manufacturer's recommendations. A qualified geotechnical engineer may be retained to determine the soil type an.d any other geotechnical condition which may affect the design and stability of the wall and surrounding area, and to provide inspection and testing services during wall construction. The geotechnicaJ engineer or his appointed representative sbaU observe and verify Lhe installation of Country Manor or Verrazo blocks, geosynthelic rcinfon.:ement, and compaction of fill soils. All fill soils should be compacted to at least 90% of the maximum dry density determined using Modified Proctor Compaction Test per ASTM D1557 Test Standards. The design of the retaining wall assumes no build-up of hydrostatic pressures within the reinforced fill zone of the wall. Therefore, construction of an effective subdrain system behind the wall is critical to the performance of the wall. Any back-cut drain required shall be determined by the project geolechnical engineer and shall be installed per the direction of the project geotechnical engineer. December 23, 2022 Mr. Robert Hom 2170 Twain Avenue Carlsbad, CA 92008 ~I -1 Job No. 22-060 Subject: Existing Keystone Retaining Wall Disc ussion an d Calc ulations Hom Residence Carlsbad, CaUfornia Please find enclosed the structural wall calculations and a discussion of the existing Keystone retaining walls at the subject property. Discussion of the Existing Keystone Retaining Walls 1. The retaining walls were constructed using the Keystone St onegate block and Miragrid ZXT geogrid reinforcement. The Stonegate blocks are 6" in height and the Miragrid 2XT is a biaxial geogrid reinforcement with the same strength parameters in both directions (see the enclosed material specification sheets). Based on random test pits a 4' long piece of Miragrid 2XT was placed every 2 blocks (1' vertically) as documented by Geocon, Inc. 2. A site visit and visual inspection of the walls was performed the morning of December 22, 2022. As of this time the walls have been constructed for app roximately 2.5 years and have been through two rainy seasons. The walls appeared to be performing well with the block facing at the constructed vertical batter. There was no visible slumping of the soil backfill or movement in the pavers installed in some of the tiers. Geogrid reinforcement was visible at the face of wall in some locations and was consistent with the two-block vertical spacing found in the test pits. A small gap in the blocks was observed at one location where two of the shorter walls combine along the north property line. This occurred where the walls split and there was a change in foundation material from wall block to gravel leveling pad. The gap in the blocks is not a structural issue. 3. Geocon, Inc. reported the reinforced wall backfill has an average relative compaction of 85%. This is less than the 90% relative compaction typically required. The owner can expect some consolidation of the wall backfill over time as the material densifies. However, the fact the wall backfill was PO Box 923 Oceanside, CA 92049 760-802-1772 -matt@m3ce.com constructed with an average relative compaction of 85% does not com promise the structural stability of the walls. 4. Geocon, Inc. performed a direct shear test on a representative sample of the reinforced backfill that was remolded to 85% relative compaction. The resultant 30-degree shear strength is the reinforced fill value used in the enclosed Keystone wall calculations. The retained and foundation zones of the wall were modeled with a 33-degree shear strength as recommended by Geocon, Inc. 5. A photo taken during wall construction shows what appears to be a wall subdrain system constructed behind the lowermost retaining wall. An outlet is shown roughly near geologic section 8-B'. The subdrain system appears to consist of 4" perforated PVC pipe wrapped in a filter fabric "sock". The outlet pipe was visible during the site visit and a connection to a suitable outlet should be confirmed by the owner. 6. Keystone walls consist of a stacked block facing without concrete or grout. The voids of th e block and the zone behind the block were filled with crushed rock. The small gaps between every block act as weep holes and in conjunction with the crushed rock can act as a functional drainage system that prevents the buildup of hydrostatic forces. 7. In general, the tiered Keystone walls are spaced far enough apart they do not surcharge each other. There are two locations where the walls are close enough together to induce a surcharge. The first location is the two lowermost walls north of the stairs and adjacent to the pool. The lower wall is approximately 3' in exposed height with 0.5' buried. The tiered wall above is approximately 3.5' in exposed height and is 1' from the back of th e lower wall at the closest point. The enclosed calculation case 3 shows this condition meets the required factors of safety. The second location is the uppermost wans at the southwest portion of the site. The lower wall is approximately 4' in exposed with 0.5' buried. The tiered wall above varies from 3' to 4.5' in exposed height and is offset 2.5' from the back of the lower wall. The enclosed calculation case 4 shows this condition meets the required factors of safety where the upper wall is up to 3.5' in exposed height. The portions of the upper wall higher than 3.5' in exposed height shall be lowered. 8. Based on the information provided, it is my opinion the Keystone walls were constructed consistent with the Keystone Construction Manual, except the difference in the relative compaction noted above.
