INCORPORATED GEOTECHNIC Project No. 02108-32-02 April 12, 2018 Shea Homes 9990 Mesa Rim Road San Diego, California 92121 Attention: Subject: Mr. Greg Ponce FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS UPTOWN BRESSI RANCH PRIVATE DRIVE A (14+30 TO 18+00) PRIVATE DRIVE I (10+00 TO 12+00) PRIVATE DRIVE J (10+00 TO 12+00) PRIVATE DRIVE K ( 10+00 TO 12+00) PRIVATE DRIVEN (10+00 TO 16+00) PRIVATE DRIVE O (10+00 TO 12+75) CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA Dear Mr. Ponce: In accordance with the request of Mr. Kevin Bunn, we have obtained representative subgrade soil samples throughout the commercial portion of subject site to provide pavement design recommendations for the private interior streets. After collection, the samples were returned to our laboratory and subjected to Resistance Value (R-Value) testing. We utilized the City of Carlsbad Engineering Standards, Standard Drawing GS-17, to estimate the Traffic Indices (Tl) for use in calculating the pavement sections. Based on laboratory testing and observations during grading operations, the subgrade soils predominately consist of silty/clayey sands and sandy/silty clays and typically exhibit relatively low to moderate R-Value characteristics. We performed laboratory R-Value tests in accordance with ASTM D 2844 (California Test Method No. 301). A summary of the laboratory R-Value test results is presented on Table I. Based on the information above and laboratory testing, we recommend the pavement sections presented on Table II. We performed pavement section calculations in accordance with California Department of Transportation Highway Design Manual; Section 608.4. Pavement section calculations are presented on Figure 1. The pavement design sections presented herein should be submitted to the City of Carlsbad for final approval. Prior to placing base materials, the upper 12 inches of subgrade soil should be scarified, moisture conditioned as necessary, and compacted to a dry density of at least 95 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density at to slightly above optimum moisture content in accordance with ASTM D 1557. For concrete sidewalks supporting pedestrian traffic only, the upper 12 inches of subgrade 6960 Flanders Drive ■ Son Diego, Colifornio 92121-2974 ■ Telephone 858.558.6900 ■ Fox 858.558.6159 .. should be compacted to a dry density of at least 90 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density at to slightly above optimum moisture content. The base materials should be compacted to a dry density of at least 95 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density at to slightly above optimum moisture content. The asphalt concrete should be compacted to a density of at least 95 percent of the laboratory Hveem density in accordance with ASTMD2726. The performance of asphalt concrete pavement is highly dependent on providing positive surface drainage away from the edge of the pavement. Ponding of water on or adjacent to the pavement will likely result in saturation of the subgrade materials and subsequent pavement distress. To reduce the occurrence for such situations, a minimum drainage gradient of 1 percent should be maintained for pavement surfaces. Drainage from landscaped areas should be directed to controlled drainage structures.
