REQUESTED ACTION: Elect a new Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Traffic Safety
Commission to serve from September 2006 through July 2007.
BACKGROUND:
Each year, it has been customary for the Traffic Safety Commission (TSC) to rotate the
role of the Chairperson by electing a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson to serve a
one-year term beginning in August. Generally, after serving as Vice-Chairperson,
the Vice-Chairperson is elected the Chairperson of the Traffic Safety Commission for the
following year.
In past years, the Commission recommended that the terms of the Chairperson
and Vice-Chairperson run from August through the following July. The selection of
the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson is typically conducted at the July meeting of
the Traffic Safety Commission. However, the July 3, 2006 Commission meeting was
cancelled.
In June 2005, Mr. Dorsey was elected to serve as Chairperson of the Commission. Also at
the June 2005 meeting, Ms. Gardner was elected to serve as Vice-Chairperson.
In the absence of the Chairperson, the Vice-Chairperson conducts the meeting.
Based upon the Traffic Safety Commission policy of having each Commissioner serve a
term as the Chairperson, only Mr. Cress has served as Chairperson previously and
Mr. Dorsey is completing his term as Chairperson. None of the other three
Commissioners have served as Chairperson.
If the Commission desires, Item 6C can be heard out of order and a new chair and
Vice-Chair elected. Upon the election, the new Chairperson could conduct the August 7,
2006 Commission meeting.
RECOMMENDATION:
Elect a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson as determined by the Traffic Safety
Commission to serve from September 2006 through July 2007.
NECESSARY CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
No action required.
