Recommended Action
Receive a report on recently completed and upcoming Adults 50+ activities, donations and
grants, as well as other topics of interest.
Executive Summary
Recreation Area Manager Eric Biggin and Recreation Supervisor Andi Koller will report on recently
completed and upcoming senior activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of interest.

ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT REPORT
Feb. 1, 2024
GENERAL
Goal 1 & 2: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center & support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
• The Senior Center hosted a variety of holiday events with over 400 in attendance, including the
Hawaiian Dance Club’s Holiday Hōʻike (recital), two performances from the Seaside Singers, a
special lunch for both Christmas and New Years Eve, and a NYE Disco Dance Party.
• On Dec. 15, 2023, a cybersecurity professional presented common scams targeting seniors and
provided some concrete steps to take to protect personal and financial information.
• On Saturday, Dec 16, 2023, and Jan. 13, 2024, Teens Teach Tech met.
• January 2024 kicked off the new volunteer-led program, Back to Basics, where current fitness room
members or day-pass holders can learn the basics of senior-focused nutrition and exercise in a
small group setting. The pilot program has been so successful, Saturdays are being added.
Goal 3 & 4: Increase social inclusion and enhance connectivity and minimize isolation
• On Dec. 15, 2023, 30 seniors traveled to Monserate Winery in Bonsall, CA for a vineyard tour and
wine and food tastings.
• On Jan. 8, 2024, Mando Basso returned for another Concert in the Courtyard.
• On Jan. 18, 2024, Senior Center kicked off our new Broadway Series with a staff favorite, Jersey
Boys. The Senior Center will be showcasing a different Broadway classic every month with the
support of Commissioner Ross.
• This Winter season, December 2023 to February 2024, the Carlsbad Senior Center halls feature
beautiful quilts from our Sewing & Quilting Group and other local artists.
• On Jan. 26, 2024, the Senior Excursion to Pelly’s Mini Golf was sold out!
• On Jan. 31, 2024, the County of San Diego presented available resources for aging adults and their
family members. Information was provided in both English and Spanish.
Other Updates
• Senior Center Special Revenue Fund Budget/Donations Review
Current balance for fund - $285,399.56
December 2023 – January 2024
o DONATIONS: $105.00 comprised of general donations and coffee deposits.
o MISC REVENUE: $3,241.30 comprised of Fitness Center drop-in fees, monthly
memberships, quarterly memberships, and annual memberships.
• Roofing Project Update Staff is anticipating completion of the Senior Center roofing project at the
end of March 2024, with some additional maintenance to take place later in the year.
