Recommended Action
Receive a report on recently completed and upcoming Adults 50+ activities, donations and
grants, as well as other topics of interest. (Staff Contact: Eric Biggin, Parks & Recreation

Executive Summary
Recreation Area Manager Eric Biggin and Recreation Supervisor Andi Koller will report on recently
completed and upcoming senior activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of interest.

ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT REPORT
December 7, 2023
GENERAL
Goal 1 & 2: Collaborations beyond Senior Center and support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
• For Kindness Day on Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, local elementary students created colorful placemats
for our homebound seniors.
• Teens Teach Tech returned on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, and welcomed new student volunteers who
met one on one with seniors to help solve their tech questions.
• On Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, seniors explored the San Diego Botanic Gardens in Encinitas.
Goal 3 & 4: Increase social inclusion and enhance connectivity and minimize isolation
• On Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, Senior Center guests enjoyed music from Daniel Newheiser.
• On Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, dining room guests celebrated November birthdays with ice cream.
• On Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, the Senior Center celebrated Thanksgiving with a special lunch,
complete with roast turkey, gravy, cornbread, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry
sauce, and pumpkin pie. After live music from Famous Frank, guests and volunteers held an
impromptu karaoke session to close out the day!
• In October and November 2023, volunteers contributed about 1,000 hours of service in our
congregate and home meal delivery programs.
• Transportation to the Senior Center continues Monday - Friday, with shopping options after lunch
every Wednesday, and opportunities to stay longer for Tuesday Bingo, monthly movies and
concerts, and special events.
• Medical appointment transportation is now offered every afternoon, Monday – Friday.
Upcoming Highlights
• The Senior Center was awarded a Holiday Grant by SD Seniors Community Foundation to support
some of the department’s holiday events:
o Friday, Dec. 15, 2023 – Senior Excursion to Monserate Winery in Fallbrook, $60 includes
roundtrip transportation, tour of the vineyards, wine tastings, and lunch.
o Saturday, Dec. 9 and 16, 2023 – Free holiday lights tour around the Bressi Ranch
neighborhood for homebound seniors that are enrolled in our Home Meal Delivery
and/or Transportation program. Hot cocoa and cookies will be included!
o Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 – Free “Noon” Years Eve Disco Dance Party. Seniors can toast
apple cider at noon during congregate lunch before walking over to the Auditorium for a
live DJ and disco hits, refreshments, photo booth, and interactive resolutions board.

Parks & Recreation
• Home Instead is bringing back Be a Santa to a Senior, providing gifts for our most in need
homebound seniors. Submissions have closed, but stocking stuffers and the like can still be donated
by Dec. 21, 2023, and will be distributed amongst our 72 HMD participants.
• Starting in December, our nutrition program will include a weekly side salad and starting in January,
a monthly main course salad as well!
• Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 21 and 22, 2023 – Seaside Singers will perform their annual Winter
Concert at 1:30 p.m. in the Senior Center Auditorium. No reservations required and free to attend.
• Friday, Dec. 22, 2023 – a special Christmas lunch with Tri Tip and holiday singalongs.
