DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The Globe Quick Response GL Series Sprinklers are a low
profile yet durable design which utilizes a 3mm frangible glass
ampule as the thermosensitive element This provides sprinkler
operation approximately six times faster than ordinary sprinklers.
While the Quick Response Sprinkler provides an aesthetically
pleasing appearance, it can be installed wherever standard spray
sprinklers are specified when allowed by the applicable standards.
It offers the additional feature of greatly increased safety to life and
is available in various styles, orifices, temperature ratings and
finishes to meet many varying design requirements. Quick
Response Sprinklers should be used advisedly and under the
direction of approving authorities having jurisdiction.
The heart of Globe's GL Series sprinkler proven actuating
assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that
contains a precisely measured amount or fluid. When heat is
absorbed, the liquid -.vithin the bulb expands increasing the internal
pressure. At the prescribed temperature the internal pressure
within the ampule exceeds the strength of the glass causing the
glass to shatter. This results in water discharge which is distributed
in an approved pattern depending upon the deflector style used.

4. INSTALLATION ----Viking 1pr1nktera are manufactured and teated to meet rigid requirements of the approving agency. The aprlnklera are
dealgned to be lnatalled In accordance with recognized Installation standards. System doalgn muat be buod on ESFR
design guidelines described In tho Jateat edition of Viki nil Jechnlcal data, ap,P.licable FM Global Losa Prevention Data
Sheela, the Jatast NFPA Standards, tho lateat standards of JVdS) Schadonverhutung, the Authorltie• Having Jurladlctlon, and also with the provisions of governmental codas, ordinances, and standards whenever applicable. Deviation from
the standards or any alteration to the sprinkler after It JeavH the factory Including, but not limited to: painting, plating,
coating, or modification, may render the sprinkler Inoperative and will automatically nullify the approval and any guar-
antH made by The Viking Corporation.
A. Sprinklers must be handled with care. They must be stored In a cool, dry place In their original shipping container. Never Install
sprinklers that have been dropped or damaged In any way. Such sprinklers should be destroyed Immediately. NOTE: Wet pipe
systems must be provided with adequate heat.
B. The sprinklers must be installed after the piping is in place to prevent mechanical damage. Before installing, be sure to have the
appropriate sprinkler model and style, with the correct orifice size, temperature rating, and response characteristics.
C. With the sprinkler contained In the plastic protective cap, apply a small amount of pipe-Joint compound or tape to the male
threads only, while taking care not to allow a build-up of compound In the sprinkler orifice.
D. Uae ONLY sprlnkler wrench 10285W/B or 13635W/B (shown In Figure 1) for lnstalllng ESFR Sprinkler VK500I With the
oprlnkler contained In the protective cap, Install the sprinkler onto the piping by applying Iha sprinkler wrench to the
aprlnklor wrench nats only, whlla taking care not to damage the sprinkler operating paru.
• DO NOT use any other type of wrench, es this could damage the unit.
• DO NOT use the sprinkler deflector 0< fusible element to start or thread the sprinkler Into a fitting.
• DO NOT exceed 50 ft. lbs. of torque (hand tlght, plus approximately two full turns with the wrench) to Install these sprinklers.
Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler.
E. After Installation, the entire sprinkler system must be tested. The test must be conducted to comply with the Installation
Standards. Make sure the sprinkler has been property tightened. If a thread leak occurs, normally the unit must be removed, new
pipe-Joint compound 0< tape applied, and then reinstalled. This Is due to the fact that when the Jolnl seal Is damaged, the sealing
compound 0< tape Is washed out of the joint. immediately replace any damaged units, using the special sprinkler wrench only.
F. After Installation and tutlng and repairing of all leak,, ramovo the protective capo from the sprinklers. DO NOT uoa
any type of tool to remove the cap. Remove tho cap by hand: tum It slightly and pull It off the aprlnkler. When removing
caps, UH care to prevent dlalodglng or damaging sprinkler ejector aprlng and fusible element. THE CAPS MUST BE
REMOVED FROM SPRINKLERS BEFORE PLACING THE SYSTEM IN SERVICE!
G. System design must be based on ESFR design guidelines described In applicable FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheets, the
latest standards of (VdS) SchadenverhOtung, the National Fire Protection Association, and the Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
All requirements of recognized sprinkler system design standards apply to systems utilizing Viking ESFR Pendent Sprinklers.
NOTE: Viking recommends Jn1talllng one style of aprlnklers (either pendent or upright) throughout ESFR systems.
However, provided the fusible elementa are ln1talled within the distance below the celllng allowed by the Installation
standardt, and when acceptable to the Authority Having Jurltdlctlon, Viking considers the prectlce of mixing upright
and pendent ESFR sprinklers to be acceptable.
5. OPERATION
During fire conditions, the heat-sensitive fusible element assembly disengages, releasing the seat and spring assemblies to open
the waterway, Water flowing through the sprinkler orifice strikes the sprinkler deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern to suppress
the fire.

6. INSPECTIONS, TESTS ANO MAINTENANCE
The owner la reeponalble for maintaining the fire protection system and devices In proper operating condition. For minimum maintenance and ln■pectlon requirement■, refer to the NFPA standard that describea care and maintenance
of sprinkler system,. In addition, the Authorities Having Jurlsdlctlon may have addttlonal maintenance, tutlng, and
Inspection requirements that must be followad.
A. The sprinklers must be Inspected on a regular basis for corrosion, mechanical damage, obstructions, paint, etc. The frequency
of lnspeellons may vary due to corrosive atmosphere, water supplies, and activity around the device.
B. Sprinklers that have been painted 0< mechanically damaged must be replaoed Immediately. Sprinklers showing signs of cor-
rosion shall be tested and/or replaced immediately as required. Installation standards require sprinklers to be tested and, if
necessary, replaced after a specified term of service. For Viking ESFR Pendent Sprinklers, refer to the Installation Standards (e.g.,
NFPA 25) and the Authorities Having Jurisdiction 10< the specified period of ttme after which testing and/or replacement Is requ~ed.
SprlnkJers that have operated cannot be reassembled or reused, but must be replaced. When replacing sprtnklers, use onty new
sprinklers.
C. The sprinkler discharge pattern is critical for proper fire protection. Therefore, nothing should be hung from, attached to, or
otherwise obstruct the discharge pattern. All obstructions must be Immediately removed or, If necessery, additional sprinklers
lnstaned.
0. When replacing existing sprinklers, the system must be removed from service. Refer to the appropriate system description and/
or valve Instructions. Prk>r to removing the system from service, notify aff Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Consideration shoutd
be given to employment of a fire patrol In the affected area.
1. Remove the system from service, drain all water, and relieve all pressure on the piping.
2. Using the special sprinkler wrench, remove the old sprinkler and Install the new unit. Care must be taken to ensure that the
replacement sprinkler Is the proper model and style, wl1h the correct orifice size, temperature rating, and response charac-
teristics. A fully stocked spare sprinkler cabinet should be provided for this purpose.
3. Place the system back In service and secure all valves, Check the replaoed sprinklers and repair all leaks.
E. Sprinkler systems that have been subject to a fire must be returned to service as soon as possible. The entire system must
be Inspected for damage and repaired or replaced as necessary. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of
combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced. Refer to the Authorities Having Jurisdiction for minimum replacement
requirements.

4. HOLE CUTTING
The ho~ method of pipe preparation is required when using mechanical tees, mechanical crosses, and sadd~. The method
of pipe preparation requires the cutting or drining of a specified hole size on the centerline of the pipe. Afways use the correct hole
saw size as shOYll'l this data sheet and never use a torch for cutting a hate. After the hoh, has been cut an rough edges must be
removed and the area 'Mthin Sia• (16 mm) of the hole should be inspeded to ensure a dean smooth surface, free of any indenta-
tions or projections that could affect proper gasket sealing. The area within the •A• dimension should also be inspected and must
be free for dirt, scale or any imperfection that could alleci proper sealing or assembly or tho fitting.
